    R.I.P. Ian. Great stuff. Thank you for the music. Hope I did you the justice you deserve in my documentary on your career.

    Ian (and Michael) on the M and G album cover looked like the coolest dudes on the planet, with their women. Ian here sounds like a music lecturer at a provincial University. Great. For me, the mellotron sounds on COTCK took the Moodies sound to the next level up, and added that extra gothic depth. Good to hear Ian explaining it Tracks only used where needed with double tracking of the mellotron, precise drumming, and multitracked "choir" to give extra power. Oh and deep lyrics!

    Great musician. Aside from his keyboard abilities, he was also an amazing woodwind player (flute, sax, clarinet) and an inspired composer. RIP.

    For some reason, the sound KC got from the mellotron on that first album is the standard by which I measure all others. It was so clean and otherworldly. I've never heard it produced in quite the same way.

    Alright! I'm glad someone posted this. I was there in that room too. I was new to the whole subject so not knowing Ian well I asked some questions which were unfair or naive and I always felt bad about that.. Hopefully he would forgive me although I'm sure he has forgotten. He was a true gentleman and even signed my M400 end stock. I tool a lot away from this meeting so thank you Ian!

    Has this guy ever even heard of Mike Pinder?

      @rayjr62 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know. And Mike even worked at the factory where they were made.

      Or Tony Banks? Or Graham Bond who used it live years before Pinder or MacDonald?

    @emibronte THe first Crimso LP would have been produced by Tony Clarke but the band wasn't happy with they way he was directing the sessions so they abandoned them and decided to produce themselves. Basic tracks from some of these sessions (without vocals) do still exist. Mike Pinder was actually working for Streetly Electronics as a mellotron tech at the time . . .

      Hi Michel .it's totally wrong !!May be you'd read it in the "so called progressiv magazine" , they did invent , when they don't know!Iexplain : Mike Pinder did work at Bradmatics(mellotron 's factory in Birmingham ) before founding the moody blues with Ray Thomas in ....1964 ! He did check , test the trons MK1 ...King Crimson raise from the ashes of "giles,giles and fripp" late 1968-early 1969 with enrolling Mcdonald and Judy Dyble early1969 only !5 years separate the two events !Ian played very well the mk2 n°219, yes that is true .The so called "progressiv sites" used to say to,
      i do live with my tron in Israel !Why ????? My tron 220 and I do live in France ,yours .

      @@alaincelos476 Thanks, and I'm aware of the Moodies' initial incarnation as an R'n'B group, however my information comes from audio recording of a meeting of all of the members of Crimso Mk I that took place about 15 years or so ago and was made available on a CD recording of the 1969 Hyde Park concert, and a run through of 21st Century Schizoid Man from these sessions was subsequently released on another CD. I'll look up the details and provide in a later post. I first read about this in a booklet insert that came with the 2LP "Young Person's Guide to King Crimson" in 1976, compiled by guitarist Robert Fripp.

      @Alain Celos Re-reading your comment I see that perhaps you're referring to my statement that Mike Pinder was working for Streetly *at*the*time *, to which I'll gladly defer to you, as it obviously does not make any sense given that the Moodies' carrer was in full swing by mid-69. I honestly have no idea why I wrote that . . . oh well.

    Nice interview, but a totally unnecessary swipe at Vanilla Fudge, who were actually one of the groups that laid the foundation for British Prog in many ways.
    Mellotron fans will hate me for saying this (I like Mellotrons), but up until recently, nothing said "dated" quite like mellotron strings. Every period of music is "dated" according to the technology of the time.

      But mellotron was an intentionally vintage sound. It was used to evoke the past. Artists have continued to use it.
