I love Kate Rusby Music, she does everything with passion and craftmanship, she is a delight.
I took my gig friends to see Kate between a Bryan Adams and Kasabian gig and they loved it
December 2011 has been great and enriched through watching Kate singing and playing Christmas tunes from around the country, wonderful.

John Barboury has gotten Jane pregnant, her mother believes him to be a common man, therefore she offers him her fortune so that he can marry her daughter properly, as she will not be very suitable as a match for any other man now that she has a child; however, John is rich and refuses her offer, because he has come for Jane and not for money.

Her mother is choosing him for her daughter. The story is often told from the point of view of the King, who chooses the man for his daughter.

I don't really get it; John gets the daughter, Jane, pregnant, but wants to be the mother's man? Or am I misinterpreting the lyrics?

To be someone's man in this context means to work for them I think.

There was a lady fine and gay
She looked so neat and trim
She went into her own garden wall
To see her ships come in
And there she spies her daughter Jane
Who looked so pale and wan
Oh, have you had some long sickness
Or lain ye with a man?
No, I have had no long sickness
Nor lain here with a man
Her petticoats they were so short
She was a nine months gone
She was a nine months gone
Oh is it by some nobleman?
Or by a man of fame?
Or is it by John Barbury
    Who lately come from Spain?
No, it is by a nobleman,
Nor by no man of fame
But it is by John Barbury
    Who lately come from Spain
And she's called down her merry men
By one, by two, by three
John Barbary was once the first
But now the last came he
Oh will you take my daughter Jane
And wed her out of hand?
And you will dine and sup with me
And be heir to all my land
Oh, I will take your daughter Jane
And wed her out of hand
And I will dine and sup with you
But I do not want your land
For I have houses and I have land
And money out by the grand
And had it not been for your daughter
I'd never be your man, I'd never be your man
I understand he will marry the daughter, he just doesn’t take the mothers’ land and belongings - the mother might be with her own agenda. That’s what I guess.
