I'm absolutely in love with the Onyx SC that I have on my Ripmo, it's flat out better than a Grip 2 Fox 36. The Topaz is quite good as well, strikes a nice balance between a poppy shock like a DPX2 and a glued to the ground shock like the X2.
Ibis should really offer that DVO suspension setup on the Ripley AF (or they're already planning to and asked you to test pilot it ;) ). The DVO setup on the Ripmos is nothing short of amazing.
Ha! That would be genius level marketing if that's why they got me this in the first place, but it sure seemed a lot more mellow than that when they sent it to me.
Jeff, is it possible for you to experiment and ponder the effects of putting a 190x50 Topaz on the Ripley and a Fox36 150mm or any other 150mm fork to see what happens with the geo? I am truly a laymen but, I am very curious, and you seem to be the perfect man for the job for this.
I've been very pleased with my Topaz. I think you'll really be able to utilize the range of adjustments to suite your riding style. I strongly recommend experimenting with the bladder pressure and the negative spacers. I find the three way switch more useful than other shocks as well. Full open for DH bumpy stuff, middle for jumps and flow, and firm is still plenty active for grip but nicely supported for climbs.
Thanks for the note 1i1, I had forgotten that you can adjust the negative air spring size on the shock. I wouldn't mind if the top ~30% was a little softer, so I'll give that a try.

Had a DVO topaz on my v2 5010. Best rear shock I've tried so far. Easy to add or remove volume spacers, and the 3-way compression lever actually makes a big difference. Open is waaay open, trail is good for mellow flow-y stuff yet keeps the pop, and climb was just firm enough to make a difference for longer climbing. Still wish Ibis would do a Mojo AF with DVO parts, ultimate fun machine IMHO ;)
Hahaha the Mojo AF, that would be fun! I doubt they'll make any al 27.5 bikes, but you never know... At this point with all the production delays, if it's easier to get a ton of al bikes, I guess it could make sense. As long as stiffness is there, I could really care less what material my bike is made outta. The ~2 lbs of weight isn't a huge deal for me.
Ay Bellingham! Lived there for 5 years while going to WWU, down in Seattle now. Just stumbled on your channel since I'm getting a new DVO Diamond D2 on my bike and wanted to find some videos on DVO.
FInally, something else than the big companies for the squishy bits. I ride a Fox DPX2 on my bike, which came stock with the frame. But having limited budget, I chose a DVO Beryl fork. Don't regret it one bit! Only downside for me is that the OTT tune on the Beryl requires opening the fork. So I had that changed with a service.
All I run is DVO now, loved the way the diamond felt compared to my lyrik rc2. My current build 2021 commencal clash is being built with a DVO onyx 180mm and DVO Jade X 🤘
Right on Hemi! I have been over the moon happy with the new 38, but the Diamond is promising. My focus has been more bikes/frames lately, but maybe I'll get an Onyx in. Looks like they are outta stock at the moment tho.
Awesome to see you out on some DVO! I've had nothing but good things to say about the products I've used over the years. I run 3 volume spacers in my Topaz on my 2016 Scout (125mm) & guessed it'd be around there for the Ripley as well. Hope to see ya out on the trails!
At some point I'd like to add a shorter 120mm travel bike but build it like this with a burlier front fork and have it fit in that "lunch ride" category. Hitting the mellower trails for a quick rip but having some fun along the way. Excellent video as always.
Hey Jeff, just suggesting that you lengthen the stock DVO fender by either putting the longer fender on top or bottom of the DVO fender. Then rivet them together in 2-4 places. Obviously, you will have to drill through both fenders but this will eliminate any zip ties and the rivets will allow for smoother and level finish. So no protruding hardware into your tires. Just a thought... Love your videos BTW
Anthony, thanks for the suggestion, I'm concerned about clearance as that's been my biggest issue with the MudHugger and RRP, but I hadn't considered stacking the fenders like that. Hopefully it'll work, as the big fenders are a necessity for riding here in the winter! I got plenty of pop rivets here.

I am personally not a fan of DVO. I had the Ripmo AF, which came stock with the DVO Diamond and Topaz. The shock failed first, within 4 months. It developed this horrible sound, every time the shock would compress, it sounded like nails on a chalkboard. I spoke to DVO and they said it needed a rebuild and they wouldn’t warranty it since I was over their 100 hour service schedule. I get it, but this was the first shock I have ever owned that required this. Another thing to note was the damper did not work one bit. It never did, wasn’t a huge deal as I rode with it open. As for the Diamond, I just couldn’t get it dialed in like a grip 2. The dials kept returning to 0, I had terrible arm pump and my hands hurt severely on our downhills. I really feel I got a defective setup. I won’t knock the company, some people do love their stuff, but I did not. Disappointed they wouldn’t warranty the topaz, that was kind of BS. I never bottomed their stuff out though, and I won’t buy any bikes that use it.
@@justinmuffley4030 I have a ripmo fox 36. BS said they chose to order fox over dvo because of service intervals and ease of setup. dvo is supposed to be great but its high maintenance and relatively challenging to tune.
@@wonderwatch2239 generally speaking yes. But guys like that wouldn’t ride something they didn’t want to. Either of them are big enough names they could’ve easily gone Fox or Rockshox. But they chose DVO for a reason. 🤔
BTW, the little brittle zip ties that come with those fenders broke on me too. So I drilled the holes slightly larger and ran some larger quality zip ties, which have never broken. I also put adhesive back velcro tape, which has really strong adhesive and taped the lower end of the fender to the inner fork leg. This keeps it from rocking front to back and probably helps with stress on the ties too. used another large front fender on the back after trimming the front nose a little, works great.

I have a topaz on order for my Ripley AF and just bought a diamond. As a mortal rider for after work rips I prefer ST 29ers because how easily I can load the shock and pop off everything on the trail vs a longer travel bike. My previous 161mm 29er muted the trails too much and I wasn't getting as many laps in as I do now with a more efficient bike
Right on Colt, I think the Ripley AF is going to be a great bike for you! The Topaz has been really impressing me over the stock Fox unit. I am using the 4 volume reducers and haver yet to experiment with bladder adjustment, though I doubt I'll want to go higher than 170psi. Hope you enjoy your ride!!!
I am considering building up a Ripley AF. I know you can run a 140mm fork. I have a 2018 YT Capra 29er. I wanted to put my Rockshox Zeb but run it at 150mm. I would put the latest Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate 190x45mm. Then put all my build from my bike to the Ripley. This would make it very burly and heavy, but I think it would be easier to pedal and climb then my enduro bike. I live in San Antonio and have no elevation to speak of. So in your opinion can I run a 150mm fork on it?
I have an Alchemy Arktos ST with 120/140 and they use a DPX2/FOX 36 setup and it is sweet because it is stiff yet playful and can handle most chunk very well...but I’m not riding like you ever, Awesome skills! Wonder how the DPX2 would be?
Hey Radigan, thanks for the note! I bet the DPX2 would be solid on the Ripley. That's my favorite rear shock that I've ridden to date. Maybe the DVO Topaz will surpass it eventually? Who knows, but the Occam (150/140) sure felt good with the same 36 Grip2 up front and DPX2 in rear.
@Radigan I'd love to know how you feel about your Arktos a year later or if you're riding anything else, since I just discovered Alchemy and love that they leave nothing much on the build kit that needs upgrading and am heavily considering one!
@@TheGeoffreyDyck Fo Dry Hill, I would hit Wayne's World, Rusty Mcloud, Muffin Top, Chunderdome, Upper Pro, Lower Pro, and Camptown. For a longer enduro style trail, I would do Horse. For pure jump lines, I would ride Maple Bar, And for a long xc trail, I would do the Olympic Discovery trails. And finally, there is a little skills park called Colville with intermediate and beginner jump lines and a pump track.
@@JeffKendallWeed Here in Port Angeles, we haven't been having much rain lately, but when it does rain all the trails hold up great because it is all glacial till. It never is very muddy, just wet.
Nice! Great riding as usual. Curious....WEIGHT of the bike with the DVO setup? How would you say the pedal efficiency compares to the Ripmo AF and the carbon V1/V2? At this price point...I've considered adding the Ripley as a longer ride adventure bike, and the extra weight vs carbon doesn't worry me a lot, as long as it pedals efficiently. I was leaning toward possibly the Revel Ranger, but now with the Ripley in AL...decisions, decisions.
Oh it’s here alright, but I need a fender that keeps mud and water out of my eyes (and GoPro). The little fashion fenders are cute but not as effective. If I do use the DVO unit then I’ll add a “forkskin” from the crown to the arch. That set up is OK but still nowhere as good as the full coverage euro fender.
Yeah the DVO fender is really only good for dry conditions like down here in SoCal where they’re located. Definitely need something more substantial for wet conditions.
Jeff any update on how you are liking the DVO compared to Fox stock setup? Wife is getting a Ripley AF soon (hopefully, its been on order for a while) and wondering if it would be a good upgrade for her.

DVO is super sweet but is apparently pretty heavy? Weight on the Diamond fork is more than a rockshox zeb. Would be sick to compare this setup to a 2021 fox 36 and dpx2.
Heavy? I didn't notice anything weight related when I was riding this set up. But it's an aluminum bike, so in generally it's a "dee gaff" situation when it comes to weight here lol!

You're right though no point being a weight weenie on an aluminum rig. I've heard really good things about the way DVO feels on treail and at the end of the day that's most important. How does the damping on the DVO compare to the dpx2/bomber z1 setup you had on your ripmo since thats a pretty fair price comparison? Cheers
I'm a smaller-frame guy, too. I'm currently on a Ripmo AF. It's a bit too bulky for me. What was you opinion about the comparison between the ripmo and ripley AF's? I'm in Pisgah and would prefer something that can handle gnar, but still nimble. There are currently no videos comparing the two.
Hey Kim, sorry but I rarely weigh my bikes, and if I do, my weights are not very relevant since I run more heavy duty parts than most folks. For instance, the tires that I need to use weigh a good pound more (each!) than the tires that most folks prefer, so my bike weights are always crazy heavy. And in the end, the overall bike weight isn't that big of a deal, anyhow.
I have 2020 Carbon Ripley with Fox Float34 130mm. What is the part number to convert to 140mm and where can I buy? I assume this would be the same part you used.
Jeff, you often mention your unusual riding style. Out of pure curiosity, do you have any guesses how much on a given mile you are actually on two wheels, rather than zero or one? Does you tend to ride more . . .conservatively, regularly, I dunno the best word here . . . if you riding strictly for "pleasure" vs. filming content?
Hahaha no I've never considered timing or counting wheelies, but that'd be a fun video idea! The majority of my ride vlogs I'm riding how I would with no camera, and there are lots of wheelies. If I'm really tired or burned out, I'll wheelie less, but I like to ride the rear of the bike and that means lots and lots of one wheel action.

Hey Nick, I now use the Arrundel Carbon Cage and a small Camelbak Podium bottle. It fits tight but it fits. The mid-sized Specialized bottles that are so common don't really fit with the piggyback shock on.
Tyler, I don't think that's wise, Ibis is adamantly opposed to folks using different length shocks than what they spec. There's not a ton of tire clearance at bottom out, either, but I guess there's the chance that without a fender it might fit? I prefer the Ripmo AF anyhow, as it not only has more travel, but a more progressive travel.

curious how you got 65deg HTA with a 10mm bump on the 34? Ibis has it at 66.5 with the 130mm. I would think it closer to 66 with the 140mm unless Ibis was underclaiming a bit
Ibis claims 65.5 for the AF. The carbon is 66.5. I have WTB tires that slacken it slightly, but it appears the Diamond And 34 are similar in height when set at 140 travel.
Charles, I notice ZERO difference in pedaling. I haven't used a lever to make a bike pedal better in a few years, tho, as all of the bikes I've ridden recently pedal plenty fine with the shock wide open.
Hi Miju, my goal is to make a mini Ripmo. This means more robust than the stock set up. The 34 forks are good, and have gotten WAY better over the years, but there is a noticeable difference in stiffness between the 34 and the Diamond/Pike/36 forks.
@@JeffKendallWeed Yes it's true, 36 forks are stiffers. I really like my Sapphire on my eviml calling, DVO makes greats products. Sorry for my english, i'm a french fan.
You broke the law! You must automatically use a fat bike if there is any snow at all! Or at least that's what my friends who I've tried to talk out of fat bikes and into trail bikes seem to think.
Sylvain, I haven't ridden one in a LONG time, but in general I prefer air suspension for mountain bikes with my style of riding. I jump a TON, so I really like having the more progressive spring rate of the air suspension. It means I don't bottom out nearly as often as I would with coil sprung suspension.

Thanks Jeff for always keeping it fresh. Quick question, I'm building up a mullet bike out of a Santa Cruz Blur Lt my mechanic suggested a 120mm to 130mm front shock up front, what shock would you suggest on a moderate budget.
I would not want to use a coil shock on this bike, as it's got a very regressive suspension curve designed specifically around progressive air shocks. I need to use almost the maximum number of volume reducers to get the air shocks to avoid bottoming. Coils are linear, and would bottom way too easily on this bike. Going to a coil would mean adding a huge amount of high speed compression, and that in turn would mean a way over damped and generally miserable set up. Maybe for riders who don't jump much ("wheels on the ground" riders), but I'll stick with air.
As a fat guy, I really do better on a piggyback shock. If Ibis offered the Ripley AF this way, I'd have a hard choice between the RipMo and the Ripley.
This Topaz came direct from Ibis, and they got it direct from DVO. I am not seeing it on the Jenson site, hence the 190x50. The correct size for the Ripley is 190x45.

Heck, I assume my vids are more "edutainment" than anything practical, but I do speak the honest truth of what I experience with these bikes. Is that applicable to all? No, but seems like enough folks use me as the "aggressive rider's opinion" to compare to the "milder rider's opinion" sources. Contrasting two opinions like that would then provide a pretty good scope of a bike.

I have the topaz and diamond on my mojo 3, made the bike even more playful. I love the set up.
Sweet! I love my DVO stuff. 🤘🏽💚🤘🏽Remember that adjusting the bladder psi in the reservoir will have an affect on the suspension feel too.

We are SO LUCKY here. This is all logging company owned land, so it's easier to build good trails, but they get logged every 10-20 years.

I am personally not a fan of DVO. I had the Ripmo AF, which came stock with the DVO Diamond and Topaz. The shock failed first, within 4 months. It developed this horrible sound, every time the shock would compress, it sounded like nails on a chalkboard. I spoke to DVO and they said it needed a rebuild and they wouldn’t warranty it since I was over their 100 hour service schedule. I get it, but this was the first shock I have ever owned that required this. Another thing to note was the damper did not work one bit. It never did, wasn’t a huge deal as I rode with it open.
As for the Diamond, I just couldn’t get it dialed in like a grip 2. The dials kept returning to 0, I had terrible arm pump and my hands hurt severely on our downhills. I really feel I got a defective setup.
I won’t knock the company, some people do love their stuff, but I did not. Disappointed they wouldn’t warranty the topaz, that was kind of BS. I never bottomed their stuff out though, and I won’t buy any bikes that use it.
@@justinmuffley4030 I have a ripmo fox 36. BS said they chose to order fox over dvo because of service intervals and ease of setup. dvo is supposed to be great but its high maintenance and relatively challenging to tune.
@@wonderwatch2239 generally speaking yes. But guys like that wouldn’t ride something they didn’t want to. Either of them are big enough names they could’ve easily gone Fox or Rockshox. But they chose DVO for a reason. 🤔
BTW, the little brittle zip ties that come with those fenders broke on me too. So I drilled the holes slightly larger and ran some larger quality zip ties, which have never broken. I also put adhesive back velcro tape, which has really strong adhesive and taped the lower end of the fender to the inner fork leg. This keeps it from rocking front to back and probably helps with stress on the ties too. used another large front fender on the back after trimming the front nose a little, works great.
Great vid Jeff, I have a DVO Jade X coil on order for my Mojo HD 5 and am really looking forward to seeing how it rides. Rented a Ripmo AF in Sedona with DVO front and back and it was pretty plush..

I have a topaz on order for my Ripley AF and just bought a diamond. As a mortal rider for after work rips I prefer ST 29ers because how easily I can load the shock and pop off everything on the trail vs a longer travel bike. My previous 161mm 29er muted the trails too much and I wasn't getting as many laps in as I do now with a more efficient bike
Right on Colt, I think the Ripley AF is going to be a great bike for you! The Topaz has been really impressing me over the stock Fox unit. I am using the 4 volume reducers and haver yet to experiment with bladder adjustment, though I doubt I'll want to go higher than 170psi. Hope you enjoy your ride!!!

I am considering building up a Ripley AF. I know you can run a 140mm fork. I have a 2018 YT Capra 29er. I wanted to put my Rockshox Zeb but run it at 150mm. I would put the latest Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate 190x45mm. Then put all my build from my bike to the Ripley. This would make it very burly and heavy, but I think it would be easier to pedal and climb then my enduro bike. I live in San Antonio and have no elevation to speak of. So in your opinion can I run a 150mm fork on it?

I have an Alchemy Arktos ST with 120/140 and they use a DPX2/FOX 36 setup and it is sweet because it is stiff yet playful and can handle most chunk very well...but I’m not riding like you ever, Awesome skills! Wonder how the DPX2 would be?
Hey Radigan, thanks for the note! I bet the DPX2 would be solid on the Ripley. That's my favorite rear shock that I've ridden to date. Maybe the DVO Topaz will surpass it eventually? Who knows, but the Occam (150/140) sure felt good with the same 36 Grip2 up front and DPX2 in rear.
@Radigan I'd love to know how you feel about your Arktos a year later or if you're riding anything else, since I just discovered Alchemy and love that they leave nothing much on the build kit that needs upgrading and am heavily considering one!

@@TheGeoffreyDyck Fo Dry Hill, I would hit Wayne's World, Rusty Mcloud, Muffin Top, Chunderdome, Upper Pro, Lower Pro, and Camptown. For a longer enduro style trail, I would do Horse. For pure jump lines, I would ride Maple Bar, And for a long xc trail, I would do the Olympic Discovery trails. And finally, there is a little skills park called Colville with intermediate and beginner jump lines and a pump track.

Nice! Great riding as usual. Curious....WEIGHT of the bike with the DVO setup? How would you say the pedal efficiency compares to the Ripmo AF and the carbon V1/V2? At this price point...I've considered adding the Ripley as a longer ride adventure bike, and the extra weight vs carbon doesn't worry me a lot, as long as it pedals efficiently. I was leaning toward possibly the Revel Ranger, but now with the Ripley in AL...decisions, decisions.

Oh it’s here alright, but I need a fender that keeps mud and water out of my eyes (and GoPro). The little fashion fenders are cute but not as effective. If I do use the DVO unit then I’ll add a “forkskin” from the crown to the arch. That set up is OK but still nowhere as good as the full coverage euro fender.
Yeah the DVO fender is really only good for dry conditions like down here in SoCal where they’re located. Definitely need something more substantial for wet conditions.

Heavy? I didn't notice anything weight related when I was riding this set up. But it's an aluminum bike, so in generally it's a "dee gaff" situation when it comes to weight here lol!
@@JeffKendallWeed Yeah the site has the diamond 29er fork at 2150grams which is a bit more than rockshox's 38mm stanchioned beast. You're right though no point being a weight weenie on an aluminum rig.

I'm a smaller-frame guy, too. I'm currently on a Ripmo AF. It's a bit too bulky for me. What was you opinion about the comparison between the ripmo and ripley AF's? I'm in Pisgah and would prefer something that can handle gnar, but still nimble. There are currently no videos comparing the two.

Hey Kim, sorry but I rarely weigh my bikes, and if I do, my weights are not very relevant since I run more heavy duty parts than most folks. For instance, the tires that I need to use weigh a good pound more (each!) than the tires that most folks prefer, so my bike weights are always crazy heavy. And in the end, the overall bike weight isn't that big of a deal, anyhow.
I wonder if IBIS is going to be updating the Geo on the carbon Ripley to match the AF?

I have 2020 Carbon Ripley with Fox Float34 130mm. What is the part number to convert to 140mm and where can I buy? I assume this would be the same part you used.
Jeff, you often mention your unusual riding style. Out of pure curiosity, do you have any guesses how much on a given mile you are actually on two wheels, rather than zero or one? Does you tend to ride more . . .conservatively, regularly, I dunno the best word here . . . if you riding strictly for "pleasure" vs. filming content?
Hahaha no I've never considered timing or counting wheelies, but that'd be a fun video idea! The majority of my ride vlogs I'm riding how I would with no camera, and there are lots of wheelies. If I'm really tired or burned out, I'll wheelie less, but I like to ride the rear of the bike and that means lots and lots of one wheel action.

Hey Nick, I now use the Arrundel Carbon Cage and a small Camelbak Podium bottle. It fits tight but it fits. The mid-sized Specialized bottles that are so common don't really fit with the piggyback shock on.
Did you add all 4 volume reducers on the positive side?

Tyler, I don't think that's wise, Ibis is adamantly opposed to folks using different length shocks than what they spec. There's not a ton of tire clearance at bottom out, either, but I guess there's the chance that without a fender it might fit? I prefer the Ripmo AF anyhow, as it not only has more travel, but a more progressive travel.

curious how you got 65deg HTA with a 10mm bump on the 34? Ibis has it at 66.5 with the 130mm. I would think it closer to 66 with the 140mm unless Ibis was underclaiming a bit
Ibis claims 65.5 for the AF. The carbon is 66.5. I have WTB tires that slacken it slightly, but it appears the Diamond And 34 are similar in height when set at 140 travel.

Remove the spacers on the negative chamber and put more air in case you have any
No spacers in negative chamber at all, all 4 spacers are in the positive to provide more progression and bottom out resistance.
Did you notice a difference in pedaling between the two shocks, since you're outside the weight range for the light tune on the stock one?
Charles, I notice ZERO difference in pedaling. I haven't used a lever to make a bike pedal better in a few years, tho, as all of the bikes I've ridden recently pedal plenty fine with the shock wide open.
hello, why do you choose the Diamond and why not the Sapphire 34 (a good trail fork)?
Hi Miju, my goal is to make a mini Ripmo. This means more robust than the stock set up. The 34 forks are good, and have gotten WAY better over the years, but there is a noticeable difference in stiffness between the 34 and the Diamond/Pike/36 forks.

Sylvain, I haven't ridden one in a LONG time, but in general I prefer air suspension for mountain bikes with my style of riding. I jump a TON, so I really like having the more progressive spring rate of the air suspension. It means I don't bottom out nearly as often as I would with coil sprung suspension.

Would a dvo coil fit?
I would not want to use a coil shock on this bike, as it's got a very regressive suspension curve designed specifically around progressive air shocks. I need to use almost the maximum number of volume reducers to get the air shocks to avoid bottoming. Coils are linear, and would bottom way too easily on this bike. Going to a coil would mean adding a huge amount of high speed compression, and that in turn would mean a way over damped and generally miserable set up. Maybe for riders who don't jump much ("wheels on the ground" riders), but I'll stick with air.

As a fat guy, I really do better on a piggyback shock. If Ibis offered the Ripley AF this way, I'd have a hard choice between the RipMo and the Ripley.
The real question is... 190x50?!?
This Topaz came direct from Ibis, and they got it direct from DVO. I am not seeing it on the Jenson site, hence the 190x50. The correct size for the Ripley is 190x45.

No, but seems like enough folks use me as the "aggressive rider's opinion" to compare to the "milder rider's opinion" sources. Contrasting two opinions like that would then provide a pretty good scope of a bike.
