- Our journey through Riemvasmaak, after a long drive from Rietfontein, proved to be an incredibly rewarding experience. The role of the Roman Catholic Church in the establishment of the area was truly fascinating. However, our adventure didn't end there. We embarked on a thrilling drive towards the hot springs nestled at the bottom of the canyon in the dry Molopo River bed. The rugged terrain tested our driving skills, but the adrenaline rush and breathtaking scenery were well worth the effort. Arriving at the hot springs was nothing short of awe-inspiring. After indulging in the rejuvenating experience, we reluctantly left the canyon behind and continued our drive towards our accommodation in Augrabies. The next morning we drove out on the Vredesvallei road and visited the spillway in the Orange River. This was another fantastic sight to behold. Having finally visited Riemvasmaak, I felt grateful for having ticked off another long-standing item on my bucket list. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #riemvasmaak

We didn't, but another viewer pointed it out on Instagram earlier today! 😳🐐 It was definitely a klipspringer and, now that I know it's there, I can't even believe I missed it while I was editing and I have a rather large screen! This sends some cold shivers down my back. Lost a lot of sweat and blood here in 1980-1982 during the army days. Lots of changes but did recognize a few buildings where we slept, did duty etc. If I remember correctly, the beacon number on top of Riemvasmaak mountain is CR1454. On my bucket list to go back one day.
Wow, thank you for sharing those memories with us! I do hope you get the chance to go back one day without all the sweat and blood of the past. How amazing that there are still buildings around that you recognise from the 80's. Those must've been the days before the settlement was even there. Amazing! 👌🏻

Wow this was an fantastic episode loved those beautiful giraffe they are such majestic animals. I must say those rock formations or should I say mountains were just awesome I didn't know that there was such beauty in this country. Don't talk about that road to the hot springs I was on the edge of my seat just riding with but it was amazing. Those weavers nest was so big just hope that tree doesn't collapse with that weight but it seemed sturdy enough. Thank you there was so much to see and all geogeous just loved it.💖
I agree with you, giraffe are always one of our favourites to see, we just love them! 😍🦒 Those cliffs surrounding the hot springs were intimidating in the best way possible, I think our mouths were hanging open at the sheer size and beauty of them! 🏜️ I thought you may be just as nervous as Sonia was on that road, it was a little bumpy at times, but otherwise fantastic! We always love it when you join us, thank you! 🚙🤩

Thanks for visiting Riemvasmaak. I spent three months there doing my 20mm gunnary course on the ratel there in 1990. Spent more time there than in 8SAI Upington, suited me, always loved nature more than the concrete jungle. I fell in love with the scenary and solitude. We had a braai each Saturday evening and a few cold ones. I always wanted to return there after I left the army but have never gotten that far, definately put it on my bucket list. So many memories, good ones ...

You're 100% correct. It does feel like those cliffs were upon us as we made our way down into the river bed. I get excited just thinking about it again! It is a magical place. 🚙🏜️

Wow! 250 kms speed limit! The fastest I ever been was 205 kms per hour on the back of a Honda Goldwing 1000CC. And that was quite fast enough. Just love the desert wilderness and wide open sky. I bet there was Bushman art in that cave! Love the giraffes. Wonder what they are thinking! Yes and suddenly we are back in the Karoo! Koppies en al! Thank for not filming the donkey cart accident. I would not have enjoyed that. I hope the people and the donkeys are okay. Love the road down to the river bed, so many scenes I would love to paint. Good thing you didnt get a papwiel on those sharp stones. Wonderful rock formations. Brave girl, Sonia, for getting down there. I also have a knee! Cartilage gone from arthritis. And ooh! Iknow how a knee feels! But that hot water is good for knees. The rocks are so beautiful. like a miniature Meiringspoort! The little Kwiddie did well on that road didnt she! So enjoyed the sunset. So love the old trees and the light quality where you stayed over at Kleinbegin. Wanted to take screen shot but the same light quality did not come through. Wanted it for a painting. But oh well. Love the views of the Orange River, got a few screen shots there that might work as paintings. Thanks guys!
I was quite chuffed to see that 250km/h speed limit sign, something we've also only heard about, but never seen until now. 🏎️ Your trip on the back of a Goldwing sounds exhilarating! 🤩🏍️ I've been on one myself a time or two. The giraffe were absolutely amazing, they remain some of our favourite animals. 🦒 I was actually filming when the donkey cart overturned, but excluded the footage. We did see an ambulance rushing in as we were heading out of Riemvasmaak, so I'm sure one or more of them were hospitalised for leg and shoulder injuries. 🚑 They took quite a tumble. I hope with you that they're OK. The donkeys looked fine, they were both still standing when we drove past. The natural beauty in this entire area is next-level, I don't blame you for wanting to paint it all! If I could, I would too! The Kwiddie did a brilliant job, as always. The road was a little challenging in places and Sonia was really super nervous. She couldn't wait to get away from the hot springs and up and out of there again. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one with us! 🚙😁
That is fast for a 1980's open bike. Especially that flat four Goldwing. Now-days the adventure gravel bikes breeze past it
Hi you two! We're back at blue skies, rocky hills and gravel roads! This really is an adventure to remember! The town's history which includes both RCC missionary work and military exercises is something to reminisce about. It always surprises me to see giraffes on flat land with few trees. They must roam far to get to bushes high enough to eat from. Your closeup of that enormous weaver nest was amazing! I'm going to save it. Not having to drive that small car down and up the canyon cliffs at the hot springs left it to Sonia and me to really enjoy those amazing rugged rock mountain views.
Thank you for the excellent drone views of the river. If it wasn't for the wall it is spilling over, one could imagine that the broad river is actually not moving.

And what blue skies, rocky hills and gravel roads these were! An absolutely awesome experience which we're happy to have shared with you! 🚙🤩 You make a good point about high trees for the giraffe, they must find it difficult to bend so low down. They all looked fantastic though, so somehow they make it work, unless they're being fed grass which we didn't see, but which we've seen in other places before. Never with giraffe though. 🦒🤷♂️ That weaver nest could've kept us captivated and entertained for another hour at least, but we had to move on. It's amazing how they built those enormous structures! I'm not sure how much of the rock formations Sonia actually saw! She was super nervous on this road, but the cliffs all around made it difficult not to be in awe the whole time! 🏜️ The spillway in the Orange was one of the highlights for me and I just had to go and check it out. Glad you enjoyed the drone shots, it is super beautiful there! 😍🌊 See you on Thursday for the next and last stop on this trip!

The road up to Riemvasmaak and the Hot Springs has not improved any since I was there😀. I keep promising myself I will return to Augrabies and revisit the falls, last time I was up there was 2018. The year the severe drought that affected Cape Town worst of all but, when I visited the falls there was very little water going over. I MUST return soon.

I'm glad our video reminded you of your own trip(s) to and in this area. The road was rough, but completely manageable if you ask me. If you ask my darling wife, you may just get a different answer! 🚙😁 You must definitely return to Augrabies and hopefully you'll have a lot more water this time around. We were there about a week or two before the Orange flooded earlier this year and there was a fair amount of water, so it was definitely still a spectacle and the noise lived up to the name of the place. Brings back such memories. I had the privilege of spending some time here while doing Botanical surveys for the SADF . Never seen so many stars at night , incredible . I used to sleep outside staring up at the night sky and watch shooting stars and satellites . Rock formations were fantastic .

Hi guys amazing video Well done Sonia getting to the hot spring with the scary road and the walk down. The scenery was stunning and reminds me of a western I could imagine the apaches in the hills the drive in was so interesting salt pan works 250 km speeds limit and giraffes. I agree that the geology looks volcanic also interesting it was a army test site and not one car on the road . What a place to live bed's out side sleeping under the stars I'm always surprised to see these RC missions when I was in primary school we had a missionary visit our school and he showed us little bow and stuff he could have been in one of the places you have visited crazy. These little towns never fail to surprise me love the story of the towns name accommodation again top notch big great dane seemed friendly and couldn't help hearing the bird song talking about birds a massive weaver birds nests loved crossing the mighty Orange River with the drone flying under the bridge great to see the guys useing fishing poles definitely old school amazing video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

The settlement was quiet as far as vehicles went, but there were quite a few people out-and-about, which was great to see. I can also imagine the Apaches in those cliffs now! 😁🏜️ The giraffe were amazing as usual, they always make us smile! 🦒 Interesting about the missionary visiting your school, they lead such interesting lives and I can only imagine back in the day when the mission stations were established! Wowzy een episode van een uur lang ! En de tijd vloog voorbij, zoveel moois kwam onderweg voorbij. Prachtig die jonge giraffe, die pootjes zijn nog zo lang & dun alsof ze er elk moment doorheen kunnen knakken. De vogels en hun ‘flatgebouw’, het is ongelofelijk om te zien en jammer dat je ze niet kunt vragen hoe ze hun weg kunnen vinden naar de ‘eigen voordeur’ 🙄. Niet te vergeten die leuke teckel bij jullie appartement; mijn favoriete hond en zo klein als ze zijn hebben ze altijd ‘het hoogste woord’ 😅. Dat poesje leek schattig, die zou je toch zo willen meenemen. Indrukwekkend het natuurpark waar jullie door reden. Geweldig is en blijft jullie interactie, Curtis zijn “It’s fantastic!”direct gevolgd door Sonia’s “It’s too scary!” 😜. Ik zou toch wel bang zijn voor een tegenligger … of zijn het eenrichtingsverkeer wegen? Het lijkt dat je elkaar op meerdere stukken niet echt kunt passeren. De Heer die in deze regio even de RK zuil verkiest ter afwisseling van de NG is verrassend. De spoorwegen en verlaten stations zijn in dit deel van Zuid-Afrika kennelijk afwezig? Is dat hier nooit aangelegd? Het water bij die Dam is echt spiegelglad, ongelofelijk mooi om te zien. Eigenlijk te veel om op te noemen, het was weer puur genieten. Baie dankie ❣️
There was just so much to see on this trip and I couldn't decide what footage to cut, so I included it all! 🚙😁 The giraffe and bird's nest were again amazing to see. I love it that you call it an apartment building, because it's exactly what it is! I think we did see a few entering the wrong door though! 😆 There were some pretty cute pets at our accommodation. 🐶🐱 You say you like the dachshund, while Sonia fell in love with Katryn, the cute tortoiseshell cat. She was sad to say goodbye to her the morning we left. We were also wondering what we would do if a car came from the front on that road. The vehicle going down will have right of way then in my opinion and the vehicle going up will have to back up and find a place to pull off the road. Luckily that didn't happen! 😨 You make a good point about the railway system being absent in this area and I don't really know the answer, but think it may have to do with the fact that there was too little industry in the area to warrant train lines and folks transported livestock and possibly salt by vehicles. 🤷♂️ Thank you for coming to the special place of Riemvasmaak with the two of us!

Stunning episode! If i was 40 years younger the the cave was a must visit. I heard al lot of things about Riemvasmaak and would like to visit the settlement one day but not sure if my Micra wil make it. Safe travel and i looking forward towards the next episode.
I'm glad you enjoyed. The cave was a no-go for me because we were really under pressure timewise that day and I wasn't keen on leaving Sonia behind anyway. The rest more than made up for it though, so I'm not too fussed about that. Your Micra should do just fine in the settlement. It might be a tad low for the hot springs though. If you get the opportunity to visit, do it! 🚙🤩

We travelled through namibia, years ago, you mention the Rose Quartz Crystal, we went to the AisAis and there was a mountain of Rose Quartz, it was so amazing. we brought some home, Then somewhere along the tour we went to a Soladite Mine, and the quartz was lying on the side of the road. you could stop and pick it up. also amazing.

Sonia didn't think so and she was very nervous the whole time down and the whole time up! We've done the Swartberg Pass, but not Die Hel yet. Not so sure that I'd tackle that in the Kwiddie, I'm not looking for trouble! 😳

Doesn't bring back particularly fond memories for me after doing infantry training there, but the incredible beauty of the place touched my soul. Would love to revisit it some day.

I did my army training as a driver there and not fond memories of being forced to run around with the heaviest rocks the sadf could find us in 42 degree weather. A few guys didnt make it through that sort of pathetic stuff we were made to do there. We did actually do some driving as well!
Those sound like tough times! 🚙😨 Hopefully the memories of the driving are good ones and I imagine you would've at least gotten to see more of the spectacular scenery that way! Let the rocks stay on the cliffs, I say! They're best admired from a distance. 🏜️

Normally we related Roman Catholic Church as English, I'll visited a few years ago Bulletrap near Springbok and found a RCC and school, all in Afrikaans, I was amazed
That is very interesting! I must say it was the first time that we saw RK on a board and it was here in Riemvasmaak. I've also always thought the RC Church was only English, but clearlyl not! 💒
I'm from US. Lekker town / Valley of the Namibian gods (fear no evil). The sunsets and sunrises never get old there. Lovely towns in Southern Namibia. I'd like to be cremated and poured all over that hotspring area. Those Quiver trees or kokerbooms are all over. I was lucky enough to have a few outside of my location house in Uis (Damara tribe). I taught a bunch of them for 5 years from 1995 to 2000, now all grown. ❤
I were there in 1981 for military training. I know the top of Riemvasmaak kop very good . All the old buildings where the Roman Catholic school is were bungalows and mess for the troops the building little bit further were the HQ and the neglected building behind it were the sickbay . The small building's you see for cottages were a canteen and junior officers rooms .
We saw for the first time the G6 155mm self propelled artillery peace being tested there by Krygkor . It were impressive !
During motorcycle training fase they make us push the bikes from the base down to the hotspring and back to base .
One of our route marches were from Riemvasmaak to 8 SAI in Upington .
Our 8 months training were hard but very memorable .
The well-known rebel Boer general....1914 Manie Maritz "old fort" is close to the village

what a beautiful country it is. sad that this country is a bit too far from America. all the best!
You don't go to Riemvasmaak for the hot springs. You go for the scenery, the bird life, and the night sky. You got to stay over at least two nights. Take a drive up the Kelkiewyn pass, going north and then down Perdekloof. About a half day trip. A 4x4 will help here, although a strong two wheel drive bakkie will be good enough. Next time take the rocky road towards the west to get to Augrabies, passing through Vredesvallei. It is slow, but not a difficult road. At Vredesvallei you can see the remains of the vines that was cultivated using your tax money.
I suppose each one travels their own way and look for different things and experiences and that's exactly what we did too! 🚙😁 We spent a total of ten minutes at the hot springs and much longer admiring the cliffs and the incredible rock formations. I don't see ourselves staying over for two nights there, but if that's what you and others prefer, that's totally fine too. We're one-nighters, no matter where we go, that's totally our vibe! I so wanted to take the road you're suggesting, but folks from Rietfontein to Riemvasmaak warned me against it, so I wasn't going to risk damaging our vehicle. 🤷♂️ Perhaps other viewers with the type of vehicles you're referring to, will follow your suggestion. This was the military training area for the bush war for the South African defence force troops. This was the place that made me a man when I was just an 18 year old boy. Was stolen land from different indigenous tribes. Watch the movie of the people that lived there originally. Very sad what happened in the past. There is by the main town there a huge mountain full of rosé quarts. Still have my piece. At 19 minutes you have pink mine

Which is better...to do a day visit to the hot spring, or spend a night out there?
I would love to spend a night out there, I think it'll be a much more immersive experience then. In more ways than one. You can lay in the hot springs for hours, admire the incredible cliffs surrounding you and I can only imagine the stars at night too. If you have the opportunity, I'd say do it! 🚙😁

That mountain at 10:00 is on the edge of a dry river bed. For punishment, soldiers from 8 SAI were required to climb to the top carrying a radio. At the top they reported in, had to wave to confirm they were on top and then come down again. Many years ago...😶
You chose a "cool" part of the year to be there. In summer, the temperatures at the springs are >40deg!
The scary road to the springs was a track back then; definitely either Shank's pony or 4x4

We were really pushed for time on this day, so I didn't even think about it! We're not big on should'ves when we look back on our travels, so not too fussed about anything we didn't do. I hope you enjoyed the other drone footage in this video. 😁

Nope, we didn't. 😁 We don't make arrangements to meet people in a place we visit, we simply can't accurately predict what time we'll arrive. Been there, tried that. We prefer travelling at our own pace and not rushing to meet a prearranged appointment time. 🙂

Hi There, you did not go to Riemvasmaak's other spring where the water comes out of the rock, you will need to go back there. Next time take the Blouputs road.....
I was fully aware of the other hot springs, but my wife wasn't able to get there, so we didn't go. You missed the parts in the video where I referred to us wanting to take the road you suggest, but that we were warned about the condition and I wasn't going to take a chance. We won't be going back to Riemvasmaak any time soon. Too many places to see, too little time on the road! 🚙😁

That was actually quite an interesting thought! 😁 I'm not very familiar with Namibia, so never thought of them together. I did look it up though and apparently 'the early Afrikaans explorers in the region named the canyon after the fact that they had to use six leather straps tied toegether to create a rope long enough to lower buckets into the canyon below, in order to fetch water.' Wildly interesting all the same! 👌🏻
While traveling in that area I learned not to ask the following questions:-
1. Is the road good, the road is always good even if the middlemanetjie is almost 25cm high and the only place to eventually is where a large truck made its turn.
2. "Is it far to ......, the answer is "nee meneer dit is net oor die bult", where is the bult about 6 hours drive away when you do not see another living soul and the nearest farm house is a dot on the horizon.

You seemed to have missed all the other beautiful things we saw! 🤷♂️ I was completely aware of the other pool, but my wife wasn't able to get there and I wasn't going to leave her behind. It may be the most beautiful part for you, but we loved seeing the rock formations and the surrounding cliffs. Each person travels their our way and this is ours. 🚙😁

I filmed with my regular cellphone, mounted it on a selfie-stick and held it in my hand. 📱That's how I always film.

This was on our 18th seven-day trip in a Kwid, so I know it extremely well already. And I drive very slowly. 🚙😁

@@welovenature360 I check our fuel consumption during every trip and it's about 19 to 20km/litre. I must immediately add that we seldom exceed 80km/h, perhaps 100km/h on the open road. 🚙😁

If you're asking why we went to Riemvasmaak, we decided to include it in this trip because we've heard so much about it, but have never been there. The stark, incredible natural beauty in this area, combined with the hot springs and the exciting road leading down to the dry river bed were just some of the reasons why it was a great decision to visit Riemvasmaak. I'm glad you enjoyed! 🚙🏜️

We certainly don't travel to see houses, we see enough of them at home. 🤷🏻♂️ We love the backroads, we don't mind the condition of them so much. They take us to places of great interest and beauty and that is the reason we travel. 🚙🛣️

While the settlement may be small, the surrounding area makes up for quite a bit of land, so I'm sure they have their issues. I would imagine stock theft might be a problem there too, but I'm not sure. 🤷🏻♂️👮♂️
