      The answer to your question of, “why simulate reality?”
      Sheer boredom. When you are an infinite being, and there is nothing except You, it tends to get boring really quickly. So You simulate reality for however long until you get tired of your sim...

    Hi, I'm just gonna throw in my 2 cents as a physicist and as someone with experience in simulation and game development: Wolfram's project is not particularly well respected by the academic community. People feel he doesn't really have much reason to believe he's on the path to find the "fundamental laws of physics". Even if it did turn out to be correct, it would be a terrible way to run simulations of anything you mentioned in the video. Simulations of systems necessarily simplify the descriptions of things to be on the appropriate scale for what is being simulated, as otherwise, the amount of computation you have to do would be incomprehensibly huge. Games are the same. We use much simpler approximations of how the world works to run games. Instead of simulating light's interaction with atoms on the surface of an object, we simply do some math to determine roughly how much light of each of three colours is expected to reflect off of a point.
    Wolfram's work is not informed by phenomena, it is directed by the assumption that we should be able to simulate the universe regardless of what paradigm we work under. But that means the paradigm he's presented has so much space for variation that it is not feasible to search the configuration space.
    I'm interested to see what comes of it, but I expect the best possible outcome is that he manages to encode the current known laws of physics into a system and finds that all he's done is effectively paraphrased modern physics.

    • @sid2112
      @sid2112 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I'm an engineer, you're 100% correct. That's the reason why I don't think we live in a simulation. The universe is too complete to be simulated.

      @@sid2112 As a mathematician, I still like to keep an open mind about things like this because although it may seem like an incomprehensibly huge amount of computation right now, it may be a completely different story in the years to come. I often think about the past and what was virtually impossible a mere 100 years ago. Think about our computational power in 1920.
      I can see the point Josh is making, and it makes sense, but I don't like the notion of certainty, especially when it comes to our universe and the laws that govern it.

    • @sid2112
      @sid2112 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@Mqxwell hehehe the old mathematician vs. engineer trope playing out almost exactly. I think the difference stems from when I build a foundation, I'm sure it will be there in my great grandkid's time unless acted upon by an outside force. But I can look at it, see it in the world and say with certainty, there it is! Mathematics is a realm of almost pure thought that swims in an ocean of uncertainty, you glide like a superintelligent dolphin under the waves.
      Tell you what, I'll keep building the labs and you keep breaking the barriers of possibilities. Deal? 😊

We're even getting close to air touch electronics.

    This is a mind bender. Honestly I’ve always thought of reality and spent months with anxiety, and developed thanatophobia because my Dog died then my Grandad. I always thought about the laws, our minds, what creates us and what after life. But there one thing that reality will always have the same real, that you aren’t alone and people will go through the same and possibly end the same. If there even is an end, but yeah. I see reality like a color we cannot see, our eyes can’t see all the colors. There no way to imagine them without seeing them. That my ideal of reality.

    i've recently discovered VR, enjoying Half-Life Alyx for one. It's not a leap to imagine VR-tech getting so good that within 100 years it may be genuinely indistinguishable from reality...including the ability for the player to feel/eat/sleep during 'play'. If that becomes possible, then it's only a matter of extrapolation to imagine an entire VR universe.
    In a simulation, the question of 'enough computing power' is irrelevalant...as it's simulated!

      no, maintaining a focus is quite doable, you just have to understand how the mind and eye work, for instance, we watch motion, want someone to turn the screen? make something fly over there, people are gonna watch things that move if everything was still before, want someone to go check out something they can't see? try using a sound to grab their attention, they'll follow it's source

    To me, the most compelling reason to create a reality independent from our own is to fuel our only true desire. I like the way Schopenhauer put it, the will has no aim or purpose other than it’s own perpetual continuation. You know what they say about forever, snap your fingers and that’s how long it feels when you’re dead. So In a reality separate from the flow of time in our own universe, who’s to say the opposite can’t be true, maybe forever to you could be the snap of a finger to everyone else. You could experience all there is to experience, and like you mentioned, learn all there is to learn in an instant. Forever happy feels just sounds nice to me.

    Even though math is a human language for describing reality, i remember 20 years ago I was getting my CS degree and working as an intern (before youtube), and one of my coworkers told me that with enough computing power, we don't need much storage except for 2 numbers, one for the starting index and one for the ending index in an irrational number like Pi to find all the things that have ever existed and just compute something like this video instead of having to store it all. It was pretty interesting to think about back then, but seems pretty tame by today's levels.

Do more research. Your spreading a misconception about how our brains work.

    I'd like to throw a thought here or there, the thing about the tree with infinite branches I thought; but without the tree there won't be any infinite branches. The infinite branches needed the tree to be infinite, which I think that puts the infinity of the branches under questioning, are they really infinite? So that's a thought. Another thing about the clones, which is simple I think. Can we consider twins clones of each other? Since they look the same and sometimes think the same as well? Are they in a constant identity theft of each other ? lol.

      Maybe it's more like if we made a simulation, we could reduce the power consumption by using superposition and only really 'process' stuff that people are able to observe. Kinda like Schroedingers cat.The rest of the universe is just idling in the background and doesn't exist visually unless we try to send out probes and such, but with a human you'd need to simulate the feel and taste etc. What happens when theres so many people that we're observing everything (or most things), I'm not sure what will happen, I imagine a cap of sorts might have to be involved to stop it crashing but I've also no idea what I'm talking about lol

    If our 'reality' is a simulation, then it begs the question: What is being simulated? From my experience so far, it makes more sense to conceptualize our 'reality' as being like some sort of MMORPG or open--world game. To be clear, I'm not saying that our 'reality' *IS* a simulation, game or whatever; merely that we could reasonably describe it in such terms as a means to better understand actuality.
    With that in mind, consider this: Your mind has accidentally become embedded within this 'game' and you've forgotten who you are in actuality. You've learned to identify yourself with this in-game character - your meatspace vehicle, i.e. your physical body - but the actuality of what 'you' are is that vast, expansive and bright awareness of your immediate experience. When you re-cognize that which is moving these bodies through the game-world, you can learn how to take control of it. That's when things get *really* interesting...
    GTA has got absolutely *NOTHING* on the wild ride of Samsara once you actually know what it's about!

    I kind of disagree with the point that a simulated universe simulating other universes would require infinite computational power, because the power in the original simulated universe would itself be simulated, it wouldn't be coming from our universe. So my thinking is that the power for each simulated universe would come only from the universe that simulated it! Thought-provoking video :)

    An infinite loop paradox may seem implausible under the premise of a finite availability of computational memory, but what if each subsequent simulation of "ultimate reality" was a more deconstructed version of the simulation before it? Thus, each subsequent simulation of ultimate reality would actually require less memory than the previous, whereby the total memory available is astronomically large but still finite.
    Ultimate reality would essentially be the host of the first simulation, and every simulation built within the first would be a fractional partition of the whole. All simulations would be uniquely complex in their own right but less refined than their predecessors, until a mathematical singularity is reached. This wouldn't answer how ultimate reality exists in the first place, but perhaps how a seemingly infinite number of simulations within ultimate reality could exist.

    It's like a ton of cells fighting because they either fight over who created it or ownership of even the happiness they seem pleasing to a creator. Even looking at the discovery of the boson. Did scientist even think that the boson the foundational building piece of energy would be smarter than the beings that found it?

    Light leaves the sun and arrives 8 minutes later... Not entirely correct, except in context. From the context of the light, which is how you presented it, it arrives instantly, as photons do not experience time. From our perspective, it takes 8 minutes. Mind blown.

    It wouldn’t require infinite processing power to simulate a recursive simulation. It would just use diminishing returns or diminishing processing or exponential decay. And it may not require a loss in rendering or quality either. You could just have everything reduce to a simulation early enough and have the programmed link to a finite amount of focus such that each simulation is less than double and occurs at the halfway point of the universe or earlier.
    Or you could make time non linear so that each simulation actually takes longer time but occurs with different rules of perception so it’s perceived as the same. You could also distort the time of the higher reality such that no additional processing occurs until the simulation is completed or like inception where an hour outside of the simulation feels like multiple lifetimes.
    In fact, the eventual goal of simulation is probably to avoid our inability to reverse entropy. So it stands to reason that we would design a way to preserve eternity in a finite moment of time.
