    G'day! Thank you so much for this video! I just received my "Christmas gift" to myself from Down Under - my Statesman Slouch hat. One side the strap was not connected to the hat, however, and after a few fruitless minutes of fiddling with it I googled your video. Took me 2 minutes to attach the strap after watching this. Now I have the best looking hat in San Antonio! Thanks mate! 🤩

      @@Ashapplications - Thank you so much for the link on ironing the brim. Now I'll tell you my "Slouch backstory" that I think you will enjoy. 😉 I am a former US military officer. When I was deployed to Bosnia in 1996, an Aussie Major, a liaison officer, visited our HQ one day. When he walked in wearing one of these with his Summer uniform on you could hear a pin drop. 100 pairs of eyes stopped whatever they were doing and stared at him. (And he KNEW he was making a fashion statement, because he just stood there for a moment, smirking. His uniform - and hat - were absolutely creaseless - unlike our rumpled Battle Dress Uniforms😉). I got a chance to chat with him and got the skinny on the Aussie "Slouch" military hat. He eyeballed me and opined that I would need a Size 59 (on the money as it turned out. He was impressive! 🤣) Well, years passed, and I promised myself that I would finally get me a "Slouch" once we moved back to San Antonio, Texas. I will remove the military "Australia" rising sun pin before I wear it out of course, as I would not want to run afoul of any of your Australian military regulations! 😂 Thus converting it for "civilian use", I intend to make the same fashion statement that major did - whenever my wife and I go out casually in South Texas! I'll repeat my first impression from that day in 1996: This is the FINEST looking hat ever crafted by the hand of man (or woman for that matter) 🥰!

      @@Jolie49 What a fantastic story! I love hearing these. I sometimes wear on of my old slouch hats, without the puggaree, when I am doing yard work or out on the shooting range. On such occasions I push the chin strap to the rear so it hangs down over my neck.
      I make slouch hat press and carriers as well. I have added the link below as an idea for storing your hat. If placed in length ways the front brim hangs over the carry handle and forms a nice dip; ready to wear.

Plenty of Aussie humour and lingo. The American characters are all from Texas and one is Ex American Army. The main aussie character wears a slouch hat Let me know what you think:

    The 2 military slouch hats I own a previous owner punched a hole in the chin strap farther down so it attaches to the clip inside the hat as it does on the left side, my Akubra slouch I've owned for 41 years i have the chin strap attached in both sides to the ends of the chinstrap, it actually came that way but it's a non military issue slouch, i was wondering why my military issue slouch,s had the chinstrap attached farther up the strap on the right side,thanks to your video i now know.

    Yes, as you said in the video you can colour in the edges of the chin strap with a brown marker. But to me it seems a little pedantic and unessessary, as over time with wear your sweat and skin oils will darken the entire strap.
    In my time in the service I've never done that nor have I ever stapled in the strap to the head band, I've always made a slit at the right measurement for the size of my head and attached it that way.

    I don't know if you'll see this in time to reply, but I'm trying to place a chin strap into my new AAC slouch hat, and there is no gap between the leather band and hat itself on mine. I need this for parade tomorrow. Great video though.

      Really odd that there is no gap in the band. Just modify the procedure slightly by stapling both ends of the chin strap. Still measure to fit as in the vid and place in four staples on each side.

      G'day mate, good question. Use the yarn from the issued sewing kit, match the colour and start and end the sewing knot from the side nearest to the crown in the raised position. I touch on this aspect in the link below. It is for the clip on the side of the hat; however, this technique will suffice for the brim clip; around the 12.20 mark.

      G'day bowieknife, The are several avenues I can recommend:
      1. best place is to access an ADF clothing store or know some one who can.
      2. eBay always seem to have them.
      3. Some specialty Military stores may stock them;
      example link below:

    • @Ashapplications
      @Ashapplications  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'day Alwin, yes.
      This does happen.
      You should now have two separate pieces.
      1.The short end with a circular stud and rectangular single buckle.
      2. The long end with the double buckle and circular stud.
      Staring with the long piece. Have the double buckle facing outwards and the stud facing inwards. Allow approx. 8cm of strap on the long piece and feed it through the single buckle. The smooth side of the leather needs to be on the inside (skin if you were wearing it).
      As you feed the strap through it will now be on the outside. Feed the long end through the double buckle.
      That's all it is.
      Hope this helps.

    This is how a recruit instructor would take the easy way out of putting on the chin strap. You don’t staple the strap. I use a razor blade and place a slit in the strap and then place it on the same way as for the left side.

    • @Ashapplications
      @Ashapplications  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      G'day Robert, I find the staples are easy to remove when the chinstrap requires adjustment; being leather it tends to stretch. I have on occasions, also used a safety pin.

    Horse riders know they need to secure their hats with a chin strap. At a gallop, the wind stream will snatch you hat right off. I run into people all the time who wear cowboy hats and claim to ride horses. But when you look closely, their hats rarely nave a chin strap stowed above the brim.
