    Can you tell me the physics behind how reefing a parachute increases the drag?

    Thank you for this interesting video, George! Quite impressive, how easy it is to improve the effectiveness of a parachute. Keep it up! Juian

      Thanks Julian. While I don't expect we would use this technique all the time, it may be useful in some scenarios.

    Quite interesting George. These pulled-apex parachutes are the most common parachutes we use in paragliding as a reserve or backup should anything nasty happen to the paraglider (big collapses, tangles, loss of controll, etc)

      Andre Bandarra what was the GSM of the fibre of the paraglider that you had done a experiment of testing very short the lines?

    Really good video, what's the name and reference of the onboard camera and the altimeter ?

    So how much smaller reefed parachute could you use instead of a normal parachute, which have the same decent rate? And therefore how much weight you can safe and thus reach an higher altitude.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aerocon Systems sells 36" parachutes reefed in this way and they claim that it is as effective as 44" chute. When you substitute the numbers into the parachute descent rate formula the rate difference is around 18% for those two chutes. I would imagine the difference in weight of these two chutes would be fairly small and so a potential weight saving as a percentage of the overall rocket weight would be also small.

    How would i make a high velocity parachute without it ripping? I have a simulation in open rocket that says it will deploy at 60-40 meters a second.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could try reefing it with a reefing ring, or deploy a drogue first and then when the rocket slows down open the main.

    Nice video, one question.. for 700g and for 1 kg what diameter (size parachute) is required for a very slow landing?
    Thanks.

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a number of factors that affect how fast the rocket descends under parachute. Here is a good reference that lets you calculate the descent rate, size of chute etc. web.archive.org/web/20111018045919/http:/my.execpc.com/~culp/rockets/descent.html

  • @KerbalChris

    Make a motor pull the string in and out for normal and reefed parachutes so you can descend fast at high altitudes so it doesn’t land too far and then reef it at low altitudes to slow down for a gentle landing

    Hey I remember looking at your site that I was looking at some of your experiments and I saw that you did a microgravity experiment with m&ms but the video is broken, so all we can see is some pictures. I would love to see that video. I am actually building my own rocket with a payload bay to see what kind of microgravity I can create, and I would love to reference your video to see what I can expect. Can you please fix it somehow? Thank you very much!

  • @riocruz5691
    @riocruz5691 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir, can you give a scientific explanation as to why the parachute with the reefed at the center has higher drag than the normal parachute?
    Thanks

    • @Shangoo
      @Shangoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      pretty sure its because it pockets slightly more air (because of its changed shape), keeping it under the chute for longer, but not 100% on that

  • @neil3850
    @neil3850 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you figure out the exact string length for the reefing line

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The length is just set so that the center of chute is in line with the outside of the parachute. The length isn't super critical.

    • @neil3850
      @neil3850 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I use a hole for the parachute should use more string around the hole to make the parachute more stable?

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neil3850 I wouldn't think so. The hole is what makes the chute more stable.

    Hello AirCommand
    I'm only 12 and I wanted to make a water bottle rocket I don't want to go too big only one bottle I know all the aerodynamics
    but I want to make a launch pad how could I make a cheap easy launch pad for pressurising rockets and have a release cord
    PS: could I get all the materials at bunnings?
    Thanks!

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes you should be able to get everything from bunnings. I would recommend building the Clark Cable tie launcher as its fairly inexpensive to build. If you need the Shrader valve you may need to visit a store like SuperCheap Auto. You may also want to read this article on launchers: www.aircommandrockets.com/rocket_launcher.htm

    Just construct a bigger parachute! XD

    • @AirCommandRockets
      @AirCommandRockets  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Then reef the bigger parachute and get even more drag. The point is you can take any similar shaped chute and give it more drag.
