To answer the "does it hold up?" No, not like other coatings. But if you use it, it ends up with a cool (and earned) battle worn finish. I paint specific rifles that have a specific purpose. But the rest stay black. But I also prefer the rust-o-leum. Good video

You are correct that rattle can jobs won't last like ceracoat will but that's the good part about it. As you use the rifle, parts of the paint will chip away giving it a unique look and further breaking up the pattern which is the point of camouflage to begin with. The bonus is you can touch up or completely change it as your environment changes. A rattle can job that works in the Arizona desert won't work for the North Carolina woods and so on

Don't be afraid of "non traditional" camo colors. Some of the leaves in your backyard match the JD green... I do understand sticking to a very specific pallet if you're going for a very specific pattern(multicam). I've even seen trees with leaves that match blaze orange hunting vests nearly perfectly in the fall. I think the rifle looks awesome! Well done guys

Gotta be honest. Before my first "spray cammo rifle project," I was really worried that it was gonna turn out crappy and would ruin my expensive gun...
So, I painted my $350 Savage Axis II, complete with scope. (Used "laundry bag netting" as my stencils... and followed Garand Thumb's directions in his second "paint video" where he paints a $3K SCAR 😬)
My Savage turned out SO badass (looked like snake scales when I was done), I couldn't wait to paint my AR-- Which *also* turned out badass!
Now, my problem is putting the spray cans down so I don't 'over do' it...
So, I spray paint my mags every time I get new ones 😂

I have painted a number of rifles and I use Tigger Strips pattern. I use a flat vise on a table top with the mag to hold the gun up or hang it from a cord. I always put 3 or 4 coats of mat clear coat on mine to help keep it from wearing off the paint. I bake them in the sun for a day or two in between colors and the clear coats, so far it has worked well. Doing Tigger Strips in a pain and takes a lot of time to get it right. I am in Florida so the Tigger Strips works very well here in the swamp and it's the one I like the most.

My first military assignment was to Germany in 1979. I was USAF, but I was assigned to a TAC unit. We had a large number of vehicles to support our mission (tactical communications). They were all painted flat green. We had to paint all our vehicles camouflage IAW technical orders. Just like you're doing with your rifle. The key is to break up patterns and eliminate flashes from optics, mirrors etc. No stencils required. Don't over think it. Go out in your back 40 and pull up some native vegetation to serve as your stencil. Grass, sage brush, maple leaves etc.

I did this a while ago to an AR (used dryer nets for the patterning and it turned out awesome). I used a foam earplug in the barrel to keep paint out. That way you can paint the muzzle break too, inside and out, without worrying about gunking up the barrel. And I was really surprised with how well it felt in the hands after painting. I expected a sticky feel or something, but it's quite the opposite. Using the same paints you used in this video, it's almost like having baby powder on the gun. A bit grippy but very dry. It's really nice.

Tape it up and rattle can it. You can brake clean/wipe it all down. I just wipe it off. It's a tool and the paint will come off no matter what. Test a few methods on a piece of cardboard. For patterns you can buy cheap burlap (makes grids), use leaves and brush, etc. Again, test it out (hold the patterns close to it), and give it a few light shots. Use some strips of burlap you can break up the edge more too. They can double as tie ins if you are going for real camo looks.

Both those ladies got laid with rattle can.
I truly will never understand the purist mindset of those who think painting quality equipment is some sort of blasphemy.
I hunt with my 700, so having it rattle canned serves a solid benefit in the woods.
I bought my arsenal of tools as effective tools, not safe queens for show.
The color of the rifle has no effect on how well that tool will perform if it’s ever needed.
I’d also like to point out that factory painted rifles tend to have a very high IR signature which makes it easily identifiable vs the flat non glossy finish of some rattle can.

I rattle canned my rifle, black rifles just seem to stand out too much. On top of that, my liberal relatives said to me this Hunting season, "I'm glad you got rid of that assault rifle and got a real hunting rifle." It was the same gun. I just painted it.

Civilians are hilarious… don’t want to paint anything high end, lol go ahead and stand out with your all black rifle. You will stand out for easier target acquisition, you do you though lol.
One pointer, lighten up the bottom and darken up the top after you get done with your patterns 🙌🏼
