I use my ring finger to play D/C bar chords instead of pinky finger.
It it a customary practice to use pinky finger for such bar chords?

There is no such thing as a customary way to hold a chord. Using the ring is actually better as you have yr pinky to add a sus4th if needed. With the pinky it just looks cooler I guess and I ve been holding it like that ever since the time when looking cool mattered...
