      the only thing i don't like... is the blob enemy... it does not look as good as the viking enemies..
      and also i don't know if there's an explanation for them to habitate the same world?

    I just wanted to point that I think you got the animation of the leaves on the tree done very well. In 2D games, one thing you see a lot of is flat, unanimated objects. It's the difference between your game looking 30 years old and new. Animation brings life into the world and although it's easy to overlook when designing, it makes a huge impact. Also to note is the specific way in which you animated them: rotating, but from a low center point. I never realized it, but this is actually very much like real trees. I had spent some time researching how people animated pixel art trees and you get a lot of individual leaves fluttering about. The way you've done it is how it should be done and it makes me wonder how applicable it might be to pixel art trees.
    Lastly, it's nice that you sell the idea of it being windy not just through the trees, but the wispy effect, debris blowing around, and the windmill. Very nice job.

    • @LostRelicGames
      @LostRelicGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey thanks, I've seen many games use a mesh deformation effect on trees, though I found that can make the environment look a little soft. On the branches I use random oscillation code that can be changed during runtime for different weather conditions . Glad you appreciate the effect!

    A foolproof way to create a seamless background image is to do the following..
    1 - Create a starting image of whatever you want for your background (let's say those mountains)
    2 - Cut vertically wherever (usually at about half) and paste IN PLACE as a new layer.
    3 - Swap the positions of the two sides (right part goes left, left part goes right) A B (cut line) C => B C A B
    4 - now the edges will always align seamlessly.
    You can now merge the two layers and draw whatever you want in the middle.
    No matter how many different images you make out of the one you had after step 3, they will always connect seamlessly to one another.
    Cheers

    Maybe instead of using adobe illustrator, give Affinity Designer a change. I worked for me. Much more user friendly and I hated doing vector stuff, but this made it easier and not completely important, a lot cheapier then Illustrator. Btw I love how your game is coming together and of course I wishlist it ( a long time ago). Keep it up!!

  • @AntTonyPony
    @AntTonyPony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Absolutely a great change.
    The one thing i find odd in a lot of platformers is the floating platforms. I get it works for some games, but i think in your game you could add just a simple rock structure that would sit back slightly holding up the platform. It would kind of look half rounded out, giving the perspective that the rounded out rock structure is set back while it holds up the platform.
    The floating traps could also use some something like this.
    Hopefully you understand what i mean. Just an idea. Its also fine the way you have and im sure most wouldnt even think of what i said.
    Great looking game Btw and it looks incredibly fun.

    Beautiful, beautiful work John! The added density of the environment is a treat to see. There's definitely still some value to having less packed scenery like you had before. It could add a nice contrast to the level design in other places, so hopefully you'll keep that in your back pocket! I love seeing all of your progress, keep up the amazing work!

    This is a majestic upgrade! In my opinion, aside from the gameplay, the background really creates that immersion. It builds connection to the player and to the "created world". Questions in mind like, what are the other Vikings doing? How many houses are there in that world? Are they building high towers as well? The background creates both that curiousity and connection to the game. Job well done!

    Everything looks beautiful! It's clearly visible how much passion you have invested in this game. I have a suggestion for you tho! To make the gameplay mechanic even more advanced. Try to add the ability to make enemies go dizzy after jumping on them. (Stars start to hover around their heads, something like that) Not for taking them down, but to create an attack opportunity. Wish you all the best ♡

    I know you said you were exaggerating the parallax for videogame feels, but the way it is right now I can't help but feel that those far off distant mountains are just blurry hills just within throwing distance. You could possibly keep the vertical parallax as it is to exaggerate vertical movement (could be cool if you moved up and above those mountains if you climbed up a mountain in game, it would help with that sense of scale), but especially the horizontal parallax makes it seem like you're either moving at the speed of a car where terrain is just wizzing past, or because you are clearly a dude running on the ground, the terrain is smaller and closer to said player.
    Love the new art and atmosphere it all brings though. Looking better already 1000%

    • @madmanmax120
      @madmanmax120 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I used a n^power type system when doing some parallax for one of my older games now which helped quickly set up a bunch of background stuff automatically. It was a pain if I wanted a bunch of foreground layers because it would get slowed down so quickly using this method, but it was a quick easy method to get something feeling "about right".

    In Photoshop: Filter -> Other -> Offset. Check 'Wrap Around'. Set horizontal shift to half width of your canvas (remember this value). Congrats, now your seam exposed in the middle of your canvas. Fix it and offset it back (or not, its not necessary). Problem solved. You might want to crop your image to the size of your canvas, before doing all this, because if you have any layers that extend beyond canvas, you might get some gaps.

    Tiled Assets (e.g. your BG Assets) can be easily made in Photoshop with a filter, which is probably called "offset filter" (i'm not working with the english ps version, so maybe it is called slightly different) There are some Tutorials on TH-cam that show how it works, but it's pretty easy to deal with.

    Nice one. One thing that bother me about most 2D games, though, is that the character is usually mirrored. For example, if your character is holding a weapon in its left hand, it will switch over to the right when turning around. This is why I prefer 3D, because there's no need to take that into account. I know this can be achieved in various ways in 2D too but most people usually won't bother.

    • @LostRelicGames
      @LostRelicGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, even the top tier games like blasphemous with million dollar budgets will mirror. In most cases it's simply a case of time and budget, as instantly the animation work is doubled. It then opens the door the enemy and NPC animations requiring the same work.
      I initially started with non-mirror, but it wsd tough. Instead I've tried to resolve this by having a turn animation where the player physically passes the axe from one hand to another. Not perfect, but it is what it is :)
