  • We added a useful tool to the movie collection; a VHS tape rewinder. I had one as a kid, and find it to be extremely useful for anyone who watches a lot of VHS, and/or sells a lot of used VHS tapes that need to be tested and rewound.
Party like it's 1999, and join me in our retro home video rental store.
Another tool, like a VCR head cleaner, to help keep your VCR going strong, and make your VHS viewing experience a bit smoother.

That's cool. We never had a tape rewinder when I was a kid, even though VHS was the only format that we had in my house as well and watched alot of. We just used our VCR to rewind the tapes. And it never felt all that long when a tape was rewinding. Mainly because we had alot of short tapes like Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, Barney tapes, Disney Sing-Along Songs tapes, Winnie the Pooh shorts and Teddy Ruxpin tapes. That's still pretty cool though and definitely handy to have.

Somewhere, in the depths of my garage, I have a VHS rewinder in the shape of a classic 50's car. Just found some Disney VHS tapes at my library so I guess I'll be digging it out soon!

Great find!! Sounds like its in good shape.
I play my 1000+ tapes every day 2 or 3. Back in the 90s all we had was VHS recording and then watched it back any time... even today looks great!
Let's see a hard drive or thumb drive last for 40 years!!!!
    Physical media Rocks!

      Best to have 2-way rewinders!!

Absolutely! I rarely run into VHS or Beta tapes with issues unless they were former rentals or are in bad shape. I have hundreds of LaserDiscs without issue as well. My oldest one if from late 1979/early 1980, and plays without a problem. Looks and sounds great too.

If that was faster, you must have some ancient VCRs.

That wasn’t the point. Rewinding inside your vcr wears out the motor

Hahaha what?! The Borg Collective. It's a Borg cube with 4 tapes inside featuring TNG Borg-themed episodes.

I’m expecting my first VHS tape rewinder this Monday. I needed it because sometimes when I pop a tape into the VCR, it cuts to a random part and I’m forced to rewind it or fast forward it to the beginning and I’ve been told that it could wear out the head or put kinks in the VCR or the tape itself. My godmother used to have a rewinder back when she was a VHS lover but not anymore given they’re outdated technology.

Бесполезная штука. Долго времени на перемотку уходит. Больше электроэнергии потратится.

That didn't seem that fast and isn't there a risk it rips the tape completely off the spool? I remember the last 1 or 2 VCRs I had could detect the position the tape was at (it would show a seek bar on the screen) so they went very fast and would slow down as they got near the end to not damage the tape.

There is that chance if the tape is worn. There are also far better rewinders than this. It was just the one I had on hand.

I've used rewinders like this thousands of times over 30+ years and never once had that happen.

      No shit!
These were popular in the late-80s-late '90s to decrease wear on the actual VCR (they were expensive), and to be able to rewind a tape while watching another. This was a great thing back when it was normal to have only one TV and one VCR in the house, and everyone had to share.
Our old one was a LOT faster to rewind than this cheap one in the video.
