    I had a phenomenally awful endocrinologist who never explained the risks of HRT. He was intelligent he just didn't give a damn about patients. Hella glad I got out of there. This is super duper important information to have access to but difficult to find quickly on the internet from reputable sources. So thanks, Chase. :)

    Everyone on here is freaking out... you just need to listen to your doctor. Take the proper dose. Keep track of your labs and CALL YOUR DOCTOR if any of them are high. Always see you doctor every three months.
    As long as you are diligent about your health then you will be fine.
    I’ve been on T almost three years and worst is I’ve had to lower my dose, hair loss, and gone on cholesterol lowering meds- changed my diet and didn’t need those anymore after 3 months.
    You just have to be very very proactive about your own healthcare and it will be fine. If your doctor isn’t as knowledgeable you’ve got to make sure you keep track of your charts.

    When you have an increase in your red blood cells and you have a higher risk of blood clotting like Chase said it is called Polycythemia. It puts you at a higher risk of a stroke or heart attack and that's why it is very important to have your levels checked regularly and make sure you have a doctor that knows what they are doing. I had a doctor that continually told me that my levels were high but didn't take action in lowering them. When I got a new doctor he said if he didn't come along I could have died at age 23 because of Polycythemia.

    Chase, I wanted you to know that I share your TH-cam channel with any of my doctors who have trans patients. I live in Idaho, and we have many transgender people here but most of our doctors are new to these kinds of patients. This new series specifically has helped so many doctors, patients and their family members understand issues faced by the trans community.
    I also wanted to thank you personally, as a transman, for being the first transmale I know that doesn't feel pressured to be a super masculine cispassing male. You help me everyday to feel happy and proud of who I am. I don't feel shameful when I want to do something that many regard as being "fem".
    I love you, thank you so much for being part of my community, and helping so many here in Idaho become accepting.
    The best part about this new video series is that I don't have to constantly answer a bombardment of questions about trans people to anyone who asks. I can just give them this resource to look up and avoid the uncomfortable situation that happens too often when you start to answer basic questions and they quickly become more and more personal. So a HUGE thank you for that too.

    just to mention- Testosterone can improve chronic health conditions as well. i have endometriosis and the combo of T and depo lupron has helped me GREATLY. ive also got issues with chronic fatigue due to a nerve disorder that i have- and that has improved with T! migranes can also improve with hormone replacement in the same way they can be made worse. also please remember not all of these things WILL happen, they just MAY happen. you might not experience any of these, there is just a chance.

    one thing chase didnt mention that can happen to some people who go on testosterone (its rare from what ive heard) is that u can get cramps just as if u were still menstruating? like its happening to me and ive heard some trans guys talk about this happening to them too so im just letting yall know that this is a thing that can happen

    • @notdog1996
      @notdog1996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      True. I have those too. I had pretty intense cramps before testosterone and I still get them sometimes without the bleeding. I call them ''phantom cramps''.

    • @jaredkodiak8160
      @jaredkodiak8160 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Man, that's shitty! I have such debilitating cramps and one of the biggest reasons that I need to be on T for me is the menstrual cessation. Hearing that I'm still gonna cramp is not great news!! Hopefully it doesn't happen to me. More reasons to get a hysterectomy, I suppose.

    • @SunshineRiot
      @SunshineRiot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @fractal astronaut I don't mean to worry you, but for me it's the main reason to get a hysto. I rarely had cramps before T and now I'm always getting them if I'm a bit too late for my shot (but no bleeding for 4 years, so yeah :D). So that's another reason for me to get these unwanted organs out of my body

    • @notdog1996
      @notdog1996 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I don't get them nearly as often as I did before, even if I still get them sometimes. If you have no qualms with getting a hysto, however, you'll never have those cramps again. That's for sure.

I also get a lot of crampy like pain (I'm wondering if that's just from hitting my cervix, though). I thought something was wrong with me. I'm so glad, this saved me from having to ask my doctor (unless it doesn't get better with copious amounts of lube).

    First of all, thank you, Chase, for making this video series! Your work is of incredible value to so many people around the world! Keep up the good work!
    For the sake of educating people on the effects of T, I just wanted to add my experiences (being 1 year and 4 months on testosterone) as they do not entirely confirm Chase's statements.
    For as long as I have been on T, I have unfortunately never had more energy or been less tired than I was before starting HRT. I haven't gone through drastic mood changes either (I can still cry!), that is, apart from getting more easily irritated. Also (and I'm sorry for getting graphic for a second!), since I'm on T, I get so much wetter down there when aroused than before, it is crazy... Last but not least, I can't say I've noticed a significant increase in hair loss. Sure, the hairline recedes, but that's about it.
    I just want to emphasize that there is no one way to experience this transition and although many symptoms are similar, each body reacts differently, so you don't necessarily go through all the changes mentioned in the video. (I know that should be clear by now, but whatever.)
    Now, there's something else I've experienced and nobody else has mentioned, so I'm not sure whether it's related to T, but I my skin is scarring so easily now from every little scratch and whatnot (I don't mean the acne, although that's certainly left its scars as well). Naive me was expecting to get a tougher skin through taking T, but what I got is just ridiculous... Any helpful feedback on where the skin issue comes from is appreciated!

    I believe another potential cardiac issue for transguys on T, (or any biologically female person with high levels of testosterone) is that having naturally smaller, more narrow veins and arteries than biologically male people, the vascular stiffness and thickening of arterial/vein walls that can happen, means blood has to pump through blood vessels that have become even more narrow, upping blood pressure (even moreso if the blood itself has also thickened) and puts strain on your vascular system, including your heart. It's a good idea to monitor your blood pressure, keep fit, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid cholesterol.

      tbh I'm worried about blood issues and cholesterol problems that run in my family so idk if I should. I'm non-binary male-aligned (kinda? not sure yet) and I'm thinking of transitioning but I'm kinda socially awkward and hate attention :/ I'm scared of asking my parents to go to therapy and all this cause idk at what age I can decide how much I want to transition.

    • @kerricksanker3051
      @kerricksanker3051 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      exclusive boi, or the list of cons has raised a redflag unique and personal to OP, perhaps regarding a preexisting condition or a known condition within their family that they have no control over.
      Some transmen are medically unable to transition. It doesn't mean they don't want it enough. It doesn't mean they are trans enough, there's no such thing.
      Maybe you are questioning your own conviction. Maybe it is easier for you to feel valid by invalidating others?
      It's obvious from your comment that you feel you need T. Imagine being told by numerous doctors that T will kill you. Imagine how helpless you would feel. I urge you to have a little compassion.
      This is a place for positivity and education. This isn't a place for you to externalize your internalized transphobia.
      Your screen name is apt, as nothing in your comment was at all inclusive.

      Nutella Unicorn It's a tough decision to start taking a medication of ANY kind on a permanent basis. When I started taking meds for my depression it was scary to hear about the side effects, but in the end I still decided to go forward with the meds because the benefits outweighed the risks for me. The information Chase is giving here is super important so you can make an informed decision, but please remember that HRT exists because it has immense benefits! No medicine is 100% risk-free, but we take them because the benefits they DEFINITELY have outweigh the problems they MIGHT cause. You deserve to feel at home in your body.

    • @exclusiveboi1723
      @exclusiveboi1723 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not sure why you took my comment so maliciously.. I'll clarify why I said what I said. Firstly the comment I was replying to came from a child. The way they wrote their comment was as if they've just thought "ah T sounds cool. Oh wait, there's cons? Ok never mind then. and my parents will make me wait anyway so it doesn't matter". I read this as if they're not really that bothered, and the fact they have to wait a while, like until being transgender is not as popular, doesn't sound so appealing to them. As a transmale I couldnt possibly imagine just thinking oh well nvm I'll just live life as a woman with my crippling dysphoria. It's not a choice, you either need it or you don't, risks are nothing if you really are trans.

  • @skylar195
    @skylar195 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is so important. I got on T years ago without really informing myself fully, due to my dysphoria consuming my decision-- nothing else really mattered. I do struggle with anxiety these days especially thinking about how trans folks are understudied and the medical field can be harmful and untrustworthy. Thank you for the information & if you haven't already done so, more videos on hystos and options would be really great!

    A dumb question but I'll still ask it:
    If the cis men of my family all still have a full head of hair at 70+, would I be like that too if I were to be on testosterone?

    • @SunshineRiot
      @SunshineRiot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Likely so. The way gene translation functions is basically that your genes are scanned depending on the environment in the cell and therefore express different qualities (like a liver cell does 'liver things' although the cell itself has the whole DNA and not just the liver part). So when you go on Testosterone for example, it causes your cells to scan more of the 'male part' of your DNA - which comes from the cis men in your family. BUT the reason for hairloss isn't really fully discovered yet, so it might depend on other stuff than just your genes

    • @greatdanelegend7001

      echo1094 probably, yes

    • @davyjones6949
      @davyjones6949 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      "which comes from the cis men in your family"
      Technically not because FTM have (usually) xx chromosomes and all dna can come from both sides of the family equally - both parents gave you information for all the things your body does, including male pattern hairloss. I was told to look for balding on my mother's side of family actually.
      I have looked into it a bit, because I am considering to go on T and what keeps me off is hairloss. On both sides of my family men have severe balding starting around 20 and look like old men before 30 :( :(
      But yes if there is no hairloss in males on either side of your family, you are considered relatively safe :)

    • @SunshineRiot
      @SunshineRiot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, maybe I didn't say it right, english is not my native language ^^' Of course there are XX chromosomes in most FTMs which come obviously from both sides and it's true that you should look on your mother's side of the family - but you'd still have to look at the cismen not the women ;-)

    • @cassidybrewer
      @cassidybrewer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      echo1094 I'm a hairstylist and for amab people it only takes genetic traits from one side of the family to have baldness but for afab people they need genes from both sides of their family to have baldness occur. There's no way to reasonably predict if you'll go bald but if you're afab and you're experiencing dysphoria I would still talk to your doctor about getting on hormones. I've had more trans women come into the salon with hair loss issues than trans men. Hope this helps! Good luck

    Great video just a couple things to add for MTF HRT. spironolactone is a diuretic and will cause you to pee more often so you have to pay attention to your water intake to make sure you don't become dehydrated. Second taking estrogen can increase your risk of developing blood clots.

They gave me the option of getting back on in lower doses but honestly after experiencing that, I realize it is not worth it. Plus I have gone through enough changes over the years that will not just go away after stopping. It is another point in my journey of self acceptance. Good video 👍

  • @addybefine4544

    It's also worth noting that a majority of Testosterone suppressing medication such as spironolactone double as diuretics. This is just a fancy word to say they cause you to pee a shit ton. Since I've started spiro I've needed to pee 2-3 times a night whereas before I could go all night and even well into the day without urinating. So fucking annoying when working for long periods of time. I just hate peeing tho. LOL

    This is great, there must be a lot of trans people who have difficulties with HRT, but it's never spoken about. I take spironolactone to hopefully supress T (need to wait and see if it works!), but I can't take an estrogen/anti-androgen combined pill because I get migraines and this all leads to a high risk of blood clots and therefore stroke. Therefore no doctor would prescribe estrogen for me. As I mentioned on a previous video I'm a cis woman with PCOS. If I have that much difficulty trying to correct my imbalanced hormones then there must frequently be difficulties trying to reverse their pattern as trans people have to.

    Spironolactone is a diuretic, so you have to watch out for that. It's also a potassium chloride retainer, i.e. your body retains that salt instead of sweating it out. So you should check your potassium levels once or twice a year. I don't know what the situation is in North America, but here in Australia, a lot of transwomen are prescribed an anti-androgen that is given to men with prostate cancer. That lowers your T-level to zero. That can be problematic. I've decided to stay on Spiro, since having zero T can lead to osteoporosis and I already have arthritis.
    The alternative to taking androgen blockers is castration. But that can be expensive, even here in Australia, where we have a free health care system. You still need private medical insurance for operations like castration (unless you have prostate cancer). The other thing with castration is that if you're taking a pill, you can always stop taking it. But castration, of course, is a one-way street.

    • @flayabarile7372
      @flayabarile7372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On a funny note, when I first mentioned Spiro to my doctor, he said, "Ah. Yes. All my post-menopausal patients ask for that so that their moustaches stop growing."

    There is a pretty informational PDF that I have referred back to multiple times as well as my documents from my endo. Just google "FTM guide to hormones" should be the first link, it will download the pdf and it is worth looking through, they also have a MTF version, just replace FTM with MTF in your google search. Again it is the first result. If you are planning on going to see an Endocrinologist I suggest looking through this before going, it helped my first meeting with them go a lot smoother.

    Another risk for testosterone is that it raises the pressure in your eyes. I have glaucoma and need to keep my pressure down, so I'm hoping just taking more eye drops than normal will make it ok to stay on T, but I still have to talk to my optometrist. I really hope I don't have to go off T.

    • @SunshineRiot
      @SunshineRiot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sorry to hear that, but you should talk with your doctor about alternatives (not for T, but for the going of T). The pressure in your eyes is caused by the thicker blood and generally higher blood pressure amongst Testosterone driven humans - so basically high blood pressure. But before going of T, I would highly recommend to do cardio/stop smoking/stop drinking alcohol/drinking lots of water/follow a low blood pressure diet/... or taking blood pressure medication. (That's just a tip as I would do so myself, in no way I'm saying what you should do! Sorry, if my english isn't on point... I'm not a native speaker ^^°)

Maybe wait until that guilt goes away and then schedule an appointment without telling her? Then once everything’s done and done, talk to her about it. Explain to her that’s what you want, and though she probably won’t listen, it’s good to try. And because you received the guilt trip from your good ol mom after the appointments done, you can’t change it or take her bullshit into consideration. I’m sure she’s a very sweet lady, but if you feel it’s right, don’t let her opinion interfere. It’s your life, not hers.

Just so y'all know that this is an option too in SOME places. speak to your doc about it obviously but this is a thing and in my PERSONAL experience I found it to speed up the process, I am only 2 months on T and my period has already stopped completely and so many changes happening more quickly and in my docs words "you want to be who you are (male) as soon as possible so lets make that happen" and I am so grateful. I’ll ask my endocrinologist about the cancer just to be sure. But lmao my dad told me I really shouldn’t go on T because I’ll probably get cancer. Glad to know, that it’s a myth.
    I’d probably have to worry about the heart problem but I already concerned myself at high risk. As a young kid I (and still today) have always Worried sure I’d have a heart attack some day because of my dads heart issues. (He almost died) Didn’t realize me being biologically female, I was actually at a much lower risk for the heart problems.
    So I guess my worries about the heart problems are still the same as they always were. (Big shrug) I guess I’ll have to run more regularly.
    My last concern is maybe the sex thing. But there’s so many different ways to have sex I’m not too worried about it.

      @@tonyschmuc5332 I heard that was only because the blood gets thicker and it increases your chances because cis men are more likely to get those problems than cis women, so it basically increases your chances to that of a cis man. there's not enough research on this. Primarily because, I think, most trans people don't like the doctor and probably avoid it. But I also heard that a good doctor should be monitoring you for that, and as long as you see a doctor regularly and have a good diet, and exercise you should be fine.
      I also know that you should be sure your doctor knows what genitals you have so they can properly be on the lookout for any health problems. I asked my doctor, and Trans people it seems, tent to avoid the doctor, so the statistics for trans related health issues is higher. Its always good to get checked even if it could be really dysphoria inducing. Plus the Doctors need to know more stuff from helping us, so that the information is learned, which will in turn help other trans people in the future.

    Thanks this series has a great amount of important info. I'm missing a video about what happens if you stop taking T? Because you reached the transition point you want to reach, or want changes to stop or want changes happen slower? Does anybody have experience with that? Stopping T? Thanks.
