In a live stream they did mention color variations. I think if they implemented this in an earn-able way. Maybe have you unlock colors through character progression that would solve your confusion on same characters.

I know you don’t do rifts but actually they do this with the ppg pet characters. If you have the ppg one of the girls is replaced with a rowdy ruff boy
