    As a 68 year old gentleman from Fife in Scotland who is just about to start sailing my 22 ft motor sailer, I`m extremely glad I watched this. I was tinkering with the idea of rigging Lazy Jacks but foresaw this problem with the batons. I definitely don`t want to leave the cockpit to go forward and gather sailcloth. I don`t have much of a walkway either side of my cabin. This video was excellent......Oh! and your visuals with the stunning assistant guarantees at least 6 viewings. A great way to memorise the instructions. Extremely well done.

    Thanks for the demo, one of my first Sailrite tasks is to convert our sail over to a sail bag and install lazy jacks. This was very helpful in showing what is needed beyond just the lines.
    I have seen, and I'm sorry I don't remember where, someone that installed a set of lines to do the same thing. When you pull on them, it pulls the lazy jacks back to the boom.

    Exactly the way I've been doing mine, after several trips confounded at the problem. Except for the boat hook trick, I hadn't thought about that. Now all I have to remember is to be sure my reefing lines are loose, or they will cause the same problem!

    Hi there! Thank you for this vid! Informative and beautiful! I am new to sailing and every tip is welcome! :-) I am actually having a hard time trying to close my lazy jack bag after I fold down the sail... Other boats main sail look neat on the bag but mine looks very sloppy and "fatty" near the mast. Do you have some tips on how to fold and close the lazy jack bag? Thanks!

    Seems like if you were to release the boom the sail would set itself straight down wind and issue solved. But hey I've never had battens in my sails. Like your videos. hello from Minnesota

    Thats a good system you guys have. I like it. I had a lazy jack system that, when uncleated, they would drop completely down to the sides of the boom. Having a baton caught in those things is a bitch.

    Question: Since you are away from your St. Pete dock do you keep paying for the slip in St Pete, give it up or sublet?

    • @SailingSatori
      @SailingSatori  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No... we did not keep the slip in St. Pete. At $750/month, it would be hard to justify, or afford. They do not allow subletting of slips. In fact, even if you have a slip rental contract, you are technically supposed to let the marina know when you will not be in the slip... this is so they can rent the slip on a transient basis while you're away. But don't expect anything in return for this curtsey, it's just the way it is.

    • @russellbrander7588

    • @johnlcallaway
      @johnlcallaway 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our marina, Rivers Edge in St. Augustine, will reduce the slip fee by 50% of someone is going to be away for extended periods. The logic they give is that this reserves the slip for the owner and ensures the marina gets something for the slip if they don't have any transients to take it.

    Unless the boat is secured to a fixed point, the moment you attempt to raise the mainsail off the wind, whether one uses your technique or not, the boat is going to sail off to leeward. Shouldn't the mainsheet/boom be slacked off?

    • @SailingSatori
      @SailingSatori  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not if the boat is under auxiliary power. Letting out the main sheet may help, but you risk the boom slamming back and forth in stronger winds or seas. Like we mentioned in the video, what we showed here was an extreme example, meaning you typically wouldn't turn this far off the wind when raising the main. But if the boat veers just 5-10 degrees off the wind, you may get tangled in the lazy jacks. Sometimes the boat can be dead into the wind and still catch the lazy jacks from the sail luffing back and forth, even when it seems impossible.

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was having the problem even while motoring into the wind with my auto pilot on, the batons catch anything in their way.

    Interesting .... I raced on a 43' Tri that has a fully battened mainsail w/ "Lazy Jacks". While there was no "stackpack" the boom has a cradle built on it. Here was the problem ... brand new mainsail made of some "high tech" material ... very soon the mainsail started to fail and rip ... NOT GOOD!!! The problem w/ that sail was that it was folding always at the same spots when dropped and stacked on the cradle ... on my racing "beach cat" w/ very similiar material (pentex) I learned to roll the sail up ... not to "flake" it ... of course the "beach cat" sail has a bolt rope, and comes off the mast. On the Tri the mainsail is attached to a sail-track w/ "sliders (?) ... they look like little "traveler cars" so they do not come off. What type of sail material (and wieght) is on Satori??? Have you had any similiar issues???
