    Dear SGT... I love 1911's and I love .45 ACP... up to some point I was very into "tactical" versions of this type of pistol... you know, serrations, rails, aggressive grip textures, etc. ... but now... and I do not mean to offend anyone here, I find a lot more pleasure in handling and shooting a standard GI version of the 1911... like my Colt Government or my Remington 1911 R1,,, it's something in the smooth grip front (no serration), the wooden grips, the balance, the weight... I don't know... Maybe it's my age, vintage sentimentalism, or something in the wine I drink... Maybe I'm not alone on this... Cheers to you all!... Eduardo.

    My first gun was a RIA GI 1911. It was carried daily for over a decade and has seen upwards of 9k rds with no failures. I bought the gun used and beat to hell. A police officer friend of mine taught me how to shoot it a few decades ago so I had to own it. It still is accurate as hell and buttery smooth with the extremely worn in parts. Im glad RIA still makes a good reliable 1911 at great prices.

    I've had two RIA 1911's still have and occasionally carry the 2nd one. First one was a GI version I got in 08. It was a beast, I had nearly 14,000 trouble-free rounds through it before I sold it to a friend. 2nd one I got a few yrs ago The fs tactical. I've got a few thousand rnds through this one trouble-free. In my experience with RIA 1911s, the only thing some might knock it for is that the finish wears very fast, especially if you carry them or draw from the holster a lot. Both of mine ended up looking like they were battlefield pickups after concealed carrying them 6 months or more lol
    I hope to add this model to my collection soon, great video.

    Another great review! I recently purchased this pistol. I can't believe it only came with one mag either (must think they are Kimber, lol). It's a hefty beast but the weight does help it shoot straight and softer than expected. This pistol was great for me out the box. I was shooting it side by side with my Kimber Rapide and I was thoroughly impressed. I did have about 5 FTF in less than 200 rounds. Maybe it needs the typical RIA 500+ round break-in? But I really do like this pistol. It's my next bed stand gun once broken in. This makes my 7th RIA and I'm seriously considering picking this one up in 10mm. Thanks for the straightforward reviews.

  • @gameragodzilla
    @gameragodzilla ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It definitely is a good platform to upgrade on. My custom 1911 is a double stack built off a Para Ordnance frame that the Rock Island more or less copied. The great thing about that frame is outside of the trigger bow, grips, grip screws, magazine catch, and magwell (I didn't even bother having one on mine since the magazine insertion was large enough), everything else is standard, off the shelf 1911 parts. So I mostly used Wilson Combat parts for the rest of my gun, took the slide assembly off my Sig 1911, and used a Kart NM .45ACP barrel. The only other thing of note is the slide stop needed some filing to prevent the bullets from rubbing against it going up the magazine, but that's still a standard slide stop that just needed some handfitting, not a specialized part.
    Really makes upgrading, tweaking, and accessorizing the gun very easy since it works identically to a standard 1911 and mostly uses standard 1911 parts, allowing me to take advantage of the massive aftermarket for the platform. And as I said in another comment thread, here, the Remington RP45 magazines should be compatible (though the baseplates may be an issue with the magwell) and that's 15+1. Taylor Freelance also makes +3 extensions so you can get 18+1 .45ACP, which is just insane.
    I do actually carry my double stack 1911, but that's because I have a 2" thick insanely overbuilt gun belt that could hold up even a .50AE Desert Eagle just fine, so anything feels lightweight compared to that.

      @@SGT1911 Nice. I picked the Para Ordnance frame mainly because it had higher capacity options for .45ACP. The 2011 style frames all seemed to top out at 14+1 flush fit and 16+1 extended vs. what I got which was 15+1 flush fit and 18+1 extended. Much better.

Had my gusmith buddy tweak the trigger pull after about 200ish rounds to make it lighter but I do think it will settle around 4 lbs after shooting more without any intervention. Thanks for the review SGT, this thing needs more love. And more 2011 builders need to start making more double stack 45s. Its honestly the biggest con of the 45, capacity limitations. There is a market for it im certain. The only other companies i know that makes double stack 45 2011s are Cosaint Arms and STP.

      Unfortunately, we live in a 9mm world.

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the lack of good .45ACP options is why I built a completely custom gun off a stripped Para-Ordnance frame (which the RIA double stacks also use). Doubly so since the few .45ACP 2011 options on the market all seem to have pretty low capacities, like 11 rounds of .45 for the flush fit magazine. Even the MBX magazines (which cost a whopping $129 a pop) were 14 rounds flush fit with a slide lock follower and 16 rounds extended with a slide lock follower.
      Meanwhile, while the magazines aren't being made anymore, I was luckily able to source a whooooole bunch of Remington R1 double stack magazines recently, which given Remington bought Para Ordnance meant the magazines were fully compatible with the frame (and I imagine they'd be compatible with RIA double stacks too). These magazines are 15+1 flush fit and with Taylor Freelance extensions go up to 18+1. That's a lot of firepower for .45ACP, and I was able to get enough that it should last an entire lifetime, even though I'm in my twenties. lol

      @@SGT1911 I highly recommend, if you still have this double stack 1911, to get those magazines if you can find them. 15+1 flush fit and 18+1 extended is a ton of firepower for .45ACP. Hell, a lot of 9mm pistols top out at 15 rounds so 15 rounds of .45 means I have the same amount of capacity and more power.

    I have 3 RIA 1911s in my collection of 17 1911s. Included in that collection are 2 Colts a Steel framed Commander and a stainless OFFICERS ACP. The RIAs are a Bright Nikeld 45ACP, a 38 Super and a wide body 22TCM/9MM. It is true that the fitting on the RIAs is not quite up to the same standards as the Colts, it is certainly adequate for the price point. I think the fitting on my Iver Johnson Eagle XL 6" is slightly better but it is a close call. None of them not even the Colts are up to the standards of the 1911s I used while I was on the post pistol team at Aberdeen Proving Grounds over 45 years ago. But those guns were hand built by a craftsman who knew what he was doing and I was never able to shoot to the guns potential. But I agree for the money Rock Island Armory guns are good value. Oh I don't need one of these RIA high capacity 45s, I have a Springfield Armory wide body 45 that also has a 14 round capacity, I bought it used several years ago from Gander Mountain for $350 and it came with 2 magazines and a holster. I also agree with you that a steel framed widebody 1911A1 in 45ACP is not my idea of an EDC pistol. These are more bedside table guns and range toys.

      @@SGT1911 The Rock Island frame is based off the Para Ordnance frame and many parts are compatible between the two (though not the triggers, as I learned the hard way when building mine).
      One more thing of note is Remington reused the mag tubes for their RP series of pistols, so the RP45 mag tube is actually compatible with .45ACP Para style 1911s. 15+1 .45ACP is a lot of firepower, and Taylor Freelance makes extensions that add an additional 3 rounds for 18+1. The followers are slightly different though (the shelf that interacts with the slide stop needs a bit of filing down or else you'd get premature slide lock) and the springs may be old (and low quality to begin with) so replace them with Wolff Para magazine springs. Took some tweaking, but now they work and have a huge capacity for a .45ACP.

    Curios if this gun would have problems running the civil defense.45 ammo. It’s 78Gr hitting 1900fps “fuck me” lol. Giving off 600lbs energy. It makes my kimber custom 2 feel almost unloaded lol. 185gr down to 78Gr. Ive tested the FPS and actually hitting 1975fps on avg. their ammo is devastating. But some guns have issues running such low grains. I’m curious if this out of the box would run that 78Gr ammo

    I have a question for you. A range instructor near me has been advising people that they can shoot whatever they like at a range but should never carry any gun anywhere they aren’t ready to give away and never see again. The police will immediately secure “evidence” if any papers are filed and a gun was involved. The gun might never be returned. The gun instructor advised that it was best to carry cheap guns that are disposable. Does any of this “advise” make sense to you?
    My first gun was a $300 S&W with a 9 lbs trigger pull. I then bought some Springfield 1911’s they have s sweet trigger but each cost approximately $1000. I could easier afford to lose the $300 but I can’t afford to lose my life because I can’t squeeze a 9 lbs trigger without going off target in a life or death situation.

    • @SGT1911

      Here is what I do. When I am traveling away from my home state, I do carry a less expensive hand gun as I think it is possible your guy could be correct. Daily, I carry on of my favorite more expensive 1911's. My thought is basically, if I need to use it, it will because I felt I had no other option and don't care about the handgun. I will survive to get another. Also, I feel our local officers know things others don't. For example, they may know you, the location, and probably even the bad guy whom they already have had experience with. My bottom line is to carry what you can use well. The price of the handgun is irrelevant if you need to survive.

Can’t imagine him telling me that then telling me come on out and shoot them both so I can see. Oh he did tell that he spent around 70 on some springs and couple other little things. But still. That only putting him around 740 with price he paid for the RiA. I will judge for myself next weekend. We all know some companies make great clones that shoot just as good as the higher priced original gun. But that is in the hundreds range of difference lol.
