The Gerber Mark II is a fantastic combat knife, and the Winter Soldier used it to it’s full potential. However, we would prefer a knife that has a little bit more use as a survival knife as well, like a Ka-Bar. With that being said, this fight scene is awesome. One of the best MCU fight scenes of all time.

May I suggest looking into the Gerber Strongarm? Great survival/combat knife and I think you might appreciate it for what it is. It hasn't appeared in any media though as far as I know
The ka-bar was just a cheaper version of a buck knife with a nearly non functional "serration". Its not a garbage knife, but in terms of "lethality" its not much better than a thick chef's knife with a custom grip
The traditional Kabar is weaker then you think. It has a rat tang, the Gerber Mark II is long overdue for a makeover full tang, better steel and handle.
Do a martial breakdown of Bicolline combat.
You mean the rat tang kabar? Or like the more expensive ones because the og kabar sucks doodlebobs
_Pros:_ *it’s a combat knife*
_Cons:_ *it’s a combat knife*
That's what I was thinking, scarsely a con really.
@@TheSpy605A soldier (especially the winter soldier and others in more specialised roles) need tools with more than one use, and for soldiers knives are typically being used for things other than direct combat- so having one only suited for combat is a big con
@@sinelacico823 I see. However, me personally I would rather carry two separate objects at the sacrifice of weight and space rather than one lighter (or heavier, like a machete? who knows) than have one item that is mediocre at both.
@@TheSpy605You also have to keep in mind. The likelihood of you having to use your knife for combat is insanely slim and you've very likely completely fucked up by that point either way.
Me personally I say there's a very obvious reason on why a military service knife should have a priority on the survival aspect.
@@TheSpy605 really depends though. As an overall purpose knife, yeah. It sucks. But asca combat knife? It works
Funnily enough, the knife originally did not have the serrations, but in the 70s stores on military bases stopped carrying the weapon because it was "too brutal"...as though that's a bad thing for a military weapon. Because of that, the manufacturers added serrations and branded it as a survival knife instead and it went back on shelves.
How do the serrations make it better
I think I'd prefer the version without serrations. I never need them.
@@lincolnward85, it doesn't but they could pretend that it wasn't a combat knife.
😂 "We can't justify handing out combat knives to our military, they might only use them to stab people "
"....*stares at board members* uh...its....serrated for rope cutting purposes too, it's a survival knife"
"Oh thank God! I thought it was just for combat"
@lincolnward85 "its a saw" or can be not wood but if you get hit with it it'll hurt a lot more and cause a little bit more internal damage not as much as cheap vodka but still not good for your body
That knife flip was crisp.
Back when Marvel still at it's peak
Fun fact: The reason he uses this specific knife is because its extremely similar to a common fighting knife used during WWII that was used by the Allies. The Gerber MK 2 is just a more modern version
Actually, the reason he uses it is because it's a cool looking knife that the armorer on set told him to use.
Sykes?
@@Dead_Again1313 Yes. Good old Sykes-Fairbairn
@InfamousTub They both served in WWII. The Sykes-Fairbairn Knife was commonly used during that time frame, especially with more elite units. The Gerber Mk. II is a more modern version of that knife. While it is a cool looking knife, it makes sense lore wise for him to use it because he'd be more familiar with that specific type of combat knife. :]
@@C4c7u5cry97id Actually, he just used it because it's a cool looking knife that the armorer on set gave the actor to use
I was waiting for Logan to reveal his new robotic arm and fight Chad.
Haha. I have something better to reveal during my next encounter with The Chad.
@@ScenicFightscareful Logan, this can be taken out of context VERY easily 😳
@@W1tty3st😳
That knife flip technique is still one of the sickest moves that I can recall watching in a fight scene.
Fun fact: Sebastian Stan, the actor for The Winter Soldier, actually trained for months to get it right. He once said in an interview that he would be walking around his house or sitting in his car flipping a plastic knife to practice.
@@I.Read.The.Hobbit.In.1937That kind of dedication to make the character more realistic and believable is a rarity now. It's only certain actors / actresses who are willing to put that kind of work into a role.
"hydra aren't going to fight you with a pocket knife" every single person Captain America fights has a damn knife
*Fights an actual Hydra. It has a knife in each mouth.*
Cap: Okay now you're just being petty!
Hey, it's technically not a pocket knife though!
I love when movies do it so accurately like this.
Ya something else is that the guns the winter soldier uses follow the same pattern of being some of the best things he could get his hands on for the situation like in the end fight in infinity war he uses an lmg I can’t remember the name of set up in a way that it would be easy to use for him and good for dealing with lots of people all at once at a decent range.
@@appleminn4204m248 Saw paratrooper converted to be mag fed instead of belt fed
Remember when marvel cared?
M249 already has the capability to be mag fed. It doesn't need conversion @SorenPrime
@@trogdor183 i was just giving the mentioned comment in my post the information Marvel had posted for the weapons they used in their movies
When your knife is made to knife even harder than a regular knife.
So it's perfect for its purpose
Yeah that's what he said at the beginning
That’s cool that Marvel took the extra step to actually have a real military knife. They could’ve easily just gave the winter soldier a random knife.
You can thank the stunt team for that.
The rubber replica they practiced with was the same knife.
Yep. Sam Hargrave who was Chris Evans' stunt double all these years was also stunt coordinator. You can see his passion in doing these type of military combat fight scenes in his directorial debut directing Extraction parts 1 & 2 with Chris Hemsworth
The best fight scene in all of the MCU
''Hydra would never attack you with a pocket knife.''
'Dammit Howard!'😂
I love that meme so mutch
Would you say that the knife is "perfectly balanced" ?
as all things should be...
@ScenicFights now can we make fun of Thanos's mall ninja double bladed knife he gives Gamora?
I think its a half gramm heavy on the back end
@@hollundergiersch8691 love that movie
Can we get some Riddick Knife reviews @ScenicFights?
@@davidwooden3878 that scene is so iconic. And yes, it would be nice to get a review of some fight scenes
Winter Soldier is still one if the MCU's Best Films and one of my favourites of all time its that good.
Which just goes to show you the winter soldier knew his assignment and brought the appropriate weapon 😂
I love Steve’s fighting style of a full-tilt, Olympic sprint in to any enemy in front of him at first instinct
This design is timeless.
Nice fit man
Also thats one of my favorite movie knife fights
Thank you! It’s also one of my favorite marvel fight scene.
This scene was one of my favorites. Love seeing knife fighting.
Thanos - "Perfectly Balanced as all things should be."
I love this knife and wish with all my heart that Ferber didn’t discontinue it
I’m imagining the Winter Soldier hacking down trees and vines for no reason now.
Sheesh that catching up the knife to the air looks cool
You're not hacking down vines, you're hacking down veins
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
thanks for being honest instead of trying to sell that knife.
One of the coolest tshirts I've seen 😮
Thank you i asked for it a half year ago and finally its here!!!
The gerber mark 2 and for that matter the fairbane Sykes are an incredible and iconic weapon.
I love the Captain America socks thooo ahhaha
Did anybody notice that he had Spider-Man socks on😂
Bro wants perfect weapon
I think this is the first combat weapon they've reviewed. I think the closest thing before this was Ghost Face's Bowie Knife.
I love that you did the “balanced as all things should be” thing with the knife 😅
Hold up, where did you get that awesome Winter Soldier rashguard?
"This is a perfect weapon for him" immediately shows him flipping it to a reverse grip XD
One of the best marvel movies to date
For two WW2 they fight like modern day fighters
Well steve has had the latest S.H.I.E.L.D training and bucky has worked under hydra for the past like 80 years becoming the perfect assasin
this scene was so good
American G.I.s have historically had hard times differentiating between combat and survival or general purpose knives. While issued to a few US units during WWII, the Fairbairn Sykes dagger didn’t hold up because it got used more for utility tasks for which it was not designed. The K-Bar had apparently fared better. One concern about the Mark II was the really short tang, high if used as a utility knife or as the “survival” knife as it was marketed after the Vietnam war, its not going to hold up. That said, I have a MKII I bought in 1983-84. I carried it playing Army for a while until I got a Gerber BMF that was far more useful. My MKII is not quite as wasp-waisted as the early ones or without the serrations, but it is sharp and hypothetically still as a role.
Still my favorite MCU film
Good short, really like it. Well done, guys.
Love, Martina
If the only downside of a combat knife is that it's only good for combat, I'd say that's a pretty good knife.
When in a survival situation, any knife is better than no knife and if you know how to use one, you’ll make it work.
Can you please break down the hand to hand combat from Batman 2022 and his unique fighting style please? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
Pro #1 perfectly balanced as all things should be.
👍👏 Great movie, fight & breakdown.
“Hydra’s not gonna come at you with a knife” - Howard Stark
_70 years later, Winter Soldier comes at him with knife._
Holy cow that design is really similar to the discontinued SOG Desert Dagger that The Bride from Kill Bill uses
nonetheless, I pick that knife over no knife every time
Hey, have y’all broken down any Invincible Season 2 or Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 fights yet? Also great videos as always 👍🏽. This fight scene is definitely one of my favorites alongside Black Panther vs Winter Soldier in Civil War. I definitely wish Marvel & DC showed off more hand to hand combat instead of having their characters constantly relying on powers or technology.
Considering that Bucky is programmed as the ultimate soldier, I’d say the Gerber Mark II is perfect for him. If he stayed with Hydra, he’d only ever need it for combat and not survival, so the pros outweigh the cons
Actually its good bc the gerber mark 2 is very well known to soldiers from ww1 and ww2
You're totally right
that shirt is wild
Instructions unclear, ended up skinning chickens for absolutely no reason.
-The army chef
Pros: "It's a perfect combat knife."
Cons: "It's just a combat knife."
Super well-balanced, as all things should be.
Do one with a katar... A super interesting weapon from my culture's past 😮
"Hes not cutting chopping stuff with this" yea hes just gonna tear a tree out of the ground😅
This is a great knife for survival, when your survival depends on ending an enemy.
Dad always said Gerber is baby food.
I want know who is cutting vines with a combat weapon
There is a freeze frame on the internet during that battle when bucky tossed the knife, but the screen shot looks like cap and buck are staring at a floating knife terrified
The way Winter Soldier fights while wielding his knife, is it Systema? Just wondering, and sorry if I guessed the wrong fighting style.
Definitely not. Systema looks like drunk people smoking together.
Probably some kinda combatives
Systema is a scam mate.
Nope he was using Combato -a military combative science developed by FA Faibairn and William Sykes in ww2 - the real world predecessors to KavMaga , Systema and the US military personal combative systems
The Mk2 and others such as the Commando dagger are perfect fighting knives. The one thing I've noticed with thrusting knives is the most popular ones have a cross guard meaning your hand is less likely to be damaged when the knife hits bone on a stab. Without the cross guard your hand is likely to ride that blade down especially if things get bloody and/or sweaty.
I carried one when I was Infantry back in the day. One other con I can think of is that while it would easily take a fine edge, the alloy was so brittle that it was just as easy to chip the edge if you did use it for any utility work other than opening an MRE.
It may not be perfect for survival, but it in the right hands it could get you through.
Pros: combat knife
Cons: combat knife
A knife is a knife. As long as it doesn't brake youre good
In all fairness, the only surviving that Winter Soldier does is in combat.
All i learned is that if a man knows more about a knife than his wife run for my life.
Being a semi knife guy I’m surprised I never looked up what he was using.
as a person who knows how to throw knives, the fact that it is well balanced makes it eligible for throwing as well
If it’s only con is that it’s really good at its job, that’s the item you need😭😭
>pros: it's perfectly suited to his needs
>cons: it's not suited for things he doesn't do
Pro1: its a knife
Pro2: its a knife
Pro3: its a knife
Also, another con, its not a parry weapon, you either stab and dodge, or be defeated.
As a retired marine any impliment you have trained with will have more than the intended use. A combat knife, can pry, whittle, slice, spoon, strip wire and much more its a utility weapon like any other knife its just its primary focus is to be a backup for your backup and knife fights in general are few and far between in active theatres
Combat is all I will need it for😈
I wish it was still In production. We have the cold steel wasp and s&w makes a cool one too.
That's exactly why I'm getting it.
That's why I prefer the kabar it's heavier but can be used as decent camp knife.
The captain America vs winter soldier fight scenes is top 10 in movies of all time bro
Argument to be made, you could still make shavings/feather sticks with it, sharp point with narrow blade would good for fileting and processing animal kills to a degree (not optimal but functionally) and can't be used for flint striking like any knife. All in all you could definitely use it as a functional secondary knife for light work, but you'd still need something for firewood /bushcraft and shelter building.
Thats such a cool rashguard ngl
Would you say the knife is perfectly balanced as all things should be?
Gerbers are great knives. I have a collection of a few as an Eagle Scout from camping.
Also a fantastic concealed cary self defence knife that ain't too expensive.
Do kratos vs heimdall next
So what your basically saying is
Pros:
It’s the perfect combat knife
Cons.
It’s the perfect combat knife
You know you've made a great product when the only downside is, "it's only good at what it's designed for, it doesn't really do other unrelated stuff well."
Honestly it's a perfect weapon as is it does its job and it's mostly made for attacking not for manual use
Sebastian Stan practiced knife flipping just so he could master that scene and how deft his character is with it.
Dude rocking now shoes for this one. LoL
Would be nice if it was still in production
Heard it was also the knife used for the knife trick in Aliens (1986)
I used a smith and wesson boot knife as a bushcraft knife for about 3 years while I was in middle school. It looked like that but shorter and no serrations. While it wasn't the best knife for the job it did perform all the tasks I needed until I got a job and bought a dedicated bushcraft tool
Pros: it does exactly what it was designed to do.
Cons: it does exactly what it was designed to do.
