Hello Colleen, thanks for this vlog! :) Always makes me happy to watch them
I would like to talk about the experience my dad has regarding sleep, maybe it can help you or some viewers?
I'll not go into much details so forgive me if there isn't too much context
Quite an anxious guy, he never slept more than 3 to 4 hours a night, we thought it was because of this anxious trait, really.
We discovered late in life he has sleep apnea : his brain was actually telling him not to sleep too much because he would stop breathing too many times while sleeping. It comes with grinding his teeth as well, in his case. Now he has a machine that helps him to breath normally in his sleep and he sleeps around 7 hours a night (well, still an anxious guy and sometimes it's less but it's a real improvement !!)

Talk to your psychiatrist about your sleep challenges. Sleep issues can be a side effect of some meds.
I also do revenge sleep procrastination naturally, or am energized at the end of the day because I view the end of the day as a deadline which kicks up the cortisol. I have to be super intentional about sleep, which got even harder as my kids wanted to go to bed later (12 & 14)
See if you can be aware of your natural rhythms so you can catch when you are naturally tired is also very helpful.
If I don’t catch when I get sleepy (9:30), then I’m up for 2-3 more hours until my next cycle.
Sleep hygiene is helpful too but so UGH for my brain.
Your vlogs became part of my wind down routine years ago.

Hey Colleen! I’m an anxious little bean here, & I also can’t sleep at nighttime. So I spoke with my doctor about it, & now he’s prescribed me Trazodone, to help me get a good 6-8hrs of sleep. I know it’s tough to give up your solitary free time when the kids are asleep for the night, BUT self-care IS making sure you are also getting a good amount of sleep. I feel so much better now that I’m not on Zombie mode & dissociating half the time because of lack of sleep. I love you! & hope that perhaps you’ll be getting a good amount of sleep sometime soon 🥰

Spend a penny comes from paying a penny to use a public toilet. The first public toilet was at the Crystal Palace great exhibition 1851, it drew many people each paying a penny for the privilege …hope that clears that one up

Hi Colleen! I completely get what you’re saying about your sleep schedule, I definitely also have the revenge sleep whatever it’s called (and adhd lol) but I just want to remind you how important sleep is! About a year ago I stopped sleeping due to a crazy workload and then not having enough free time during the day so I would stay up, and I quite literally sent myself into a state of sleep deprivation psychosis and was hallucinating. I don’t say this for pity I promise I am okay now, but I genuinely did not understand that your body NEEDS sleep to function and I found that out the hard way unfortunately. Now that I am out of that mess I truly understand how important sleep is, and not only that, but when you start prioritizing sleep you have so much more time for things during the day because you can give more energy to everything. I know how hard it is at night when you want to stay up (this is literally what frustrates me most about my own adhd) but sleep is so important and so much more worth it. Your brain and body deserve to be treated right I’d hate to see you end up in the position I unfortunately ended up in. It takes a long time to recover from and it sneaks up on you fast. I love you and wish you the best! Stay strong and don’t let the voices in your head win :)

Hiii I’m from the uk and we use loads of those terms, most common would be stag do, chin wag, chuffed and bagsy!

  • @ems.images_
    @ems.images_ 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

    As a brit!
    - Everyone says stag-do / hen-do for bachelor/bachelorette parties. Nobody says the American terms here.
    - i don’t really say gagging but I have heard it. I think this is one that changes around the country
    - chuffed is very common! Especially with older people I’d say. I feel like it’s usually used sarcastically though, as in “you look well chuffed!” When someone’s upset lol
    - we use milk tooth / baby tooth interchangeably
    - chinwag is pretty common, I’d say more around London though (our slang/accents vary widely across the country). It’s called a chinwag because well- your chin wags when you talk a lot
    - I don’t think you have anything similar to squash in America? It’s very nice though! I do know that some people mistakenly drink it straight and don’t like it but you need to water it down
    - I don’t think many people really say hundreds and thousands anymore but my grandma does! Again, I think that’s more popular with older people.
    - bog-roll, loo-roll, toilet paper, it’s all the same! We also call the toilet the bog/loo interchangeably, although I will say that bog isn’t really said in polite conversation.
    - I think I’ve heard quaff? It’s pronounced “kwoff” I think. I’m not sure though- I don’t think people really say this much anymore.
    - bagsy is like dibs. We say both.
    - I think spend a penny comes from old public toilets, where you’d pay a penny for entry. I’m talking a long time ago though! People typically say spend a penny to be polite. Another interesting one is some older people will say “flush the chain” instead of just “flush” because you used to have to pull a chain to flush the toilet.
    - I’ve never heard of “serving at her/his majesty’s pleasure” but I assume it’s maybe something they say in prisons? Our prisons typically are named starting with HM, meaning “her/his majesty’s”, followed by the actual name. It’s probably to do with the fact that the monarch owns the prisons (technically?) but I’m not sure.
Sorry for the insanely long comment but I thought it might be interesting to hear from a Brit how accurate these phrases are lol

Yesterday I only slept like 5 hours and my mind always goes nuts but I swear yesterday for like 2h I could not help myself to not break down crying. It was soo hard to get out of it and distract me somehow from my thoughts. It’s only this worse when I haven’t slept enough. A lot of people always kind of laugh about the amount of sleep I need but I literally could not function. Electrolytes will get you some potassium and magnesium and help with headaches. 1 glass a day. And be sure to get some Celtic sea salt. It has around 100 different minerals. And drink water. These are some simple things you can do to help sleep. There are about 6 different magnesium types. Look it up to see which is best for you. The salt and electrolytes will on its own make you feel better. You can get magnesium and potassium from certain foods too. If you use supplements, be sure to not take too much. Look it up too! The magnesium will help you sleep! Potassium works with magnesium. Hope this helps! 😊💖

Spending a penny comes from using a public toilet. We had to put a penny in the slot to open the door of the stall. These days it can be as much as a pound. Not all public toilets do this in the uk.

Being from the south I knew all of them, they say breeches instead of pants, if you ask for pants in England they think you mean undies. We use many words that have been forgotten.

Colleen I happen to have a Birthday Cake Recipe that shows you how to cut out a house! I recently found it when my Mother passed away and I remembered she made it for me when I was a little girl back in the 60's! I would love to share this with you

British here and yes, I’ve heard all of those words/phrases and use them often, except for ‘quaff’ which is mainly used by posh people, which I am definitely not 😂. I am surprised you don’t say milk teeth in the US though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Glad I know most of the British Slang as an American I think the spend a penny comes from the fact that you have to pay to use some public toilets (loos) in England and other parts of Europe.

I’m the same way with sleep. I stay up until my kid goes to school in the morning, then sleep for a couple hours. I work at night, but I’ve always been this way. As a child, I’d wait until everyone went to bed then I’d get back up and hang out and watch Nick at Night.

When my toddler goes to bed for the night I consciously recognize that my body needs sleep too, but I stay up late to have relax time for myself and then I’m groggy and struggle to start my day the next morning. Everyday.

That's crazy that there isn't a Sonic near you. There's a Sonic near me, near my boyfriend, and my mom who lives out of state. Sonic has good shakes. Their burgers and chili dogs are good too. My boyfriend and I always joke about Sonic the Hedgehog when we go cuz there are so many accidental references even though they don't want there to be.

Getting enough sleep for me takes so much self control and discipline. I have to let my brain get tired before I can fall asleep. So I go to bed at least an hour before I need to be asleep. I watch videos until my eyes get heavy then I have to turn it off right then to fall asleep. If I push past the sleepy I’ll be up for hours!

I know I'm late to tortilla talk, but new mom brain! Keep meaning to comment and don't get to it. 😅 *NOT shaming or offended at all* just every time I hear it, it triggers a fun fact squirrel moment. Did you know the muffin man song is about a serial killer from London? I'm a daycare teacher and researched a lot of nursery rhymes. Most of them have really horrible history. 😔 I learned that nursery rhymes was a way back in the day to keep children informed about current events without scaring them... Thought I would share. 😮
