When Mike wasn’t chosen as the bachelor after being on the bachelorette, I was honestly shocked and super disappointed! I think that he would have been an amazing bachelor but I am super excited to watch Matt’s season!! I hope Mike can come back for bachelor in paradise if they have another season because he seems like such a good person.

Two things can be true at the same time. I'm super happy he is the bachelor. He is good looking, has a real job and spearheads a charity. He's the whole package. It is also true that Claire was on the money about him not really being interested in her, no shade and maybe she handled it poorly, but she wasn't incorrect.

He did help me carry a really heavy box when I was moving into my dorm so he's cool in my book lolz. Tyler Cameron is the other bachelor person I went to college with. We had one acting class together and he was pretty bad...That's all I can remember besides seeing them at the odd frat party...
It might have been a knee jerk reaction by ABC, BUT I’m more excited for THIS season than I was for Bachelor Colton or Pilot Pete! The early announcement also gives them time to cast for more legitimate matches rather than Bubbly and Fun. In my opinion Matt will gravitate towards the Spunky and Sassy personalities and hopefully the ones actually ready for marriage and kids. Also after watching some of the Greatest Seasons of All-Time I believe the Bachelor could use a change of scenery and this could be an opportunity to film in New York instead. 💯👍
He seems like a great guy & a worthy lead - I wasn’t a fan of the announcement as Rachel pointed out (I’ve been loving her outspokenness, I imagine it’s hard to be franchises’ POC spokesperson/main representative - but I think she’s been doing a phenomenal job pointing out a lot of the franchise’s shortcomings). I really hope the franchise steps up to the demands from the petition - I think a lot of people will be watching the show with a more critical eye going forward & I just really want them to step up to the challenge.

I’m just wondering why Taylor C. got passed over for bachelor now that he’s not with Gigi Hadid anymore? He was second in line and that’s usually the one that they take. I Met one of the Bachelor in Paradise contestants (through a mutual friend) last summer. It was right after the filming and I asked her who she thought the next bachelor would be (this was of course before they announced Peter). At the time she said either Peter or Tyler. I asked her ẅhy not Mike, he seemed like the best option. She told me that Mike was not that nice to the staff of Paradise behind the scenes and would make a lot of rude comments that were never aired on TV. She thought, that because of how he treated them, they might not want to have him full time as the lead. I was pretty bummed to hear that! I was really hoping they would pick him, but maybe that was a factor in their decision. This is just what she told me and of course, only one person's opinion of him and he was obviously not there to defend himself. I'm so not sure if it's true, but just what I heard, so no hate here! P.s I really think Tayshia should have been picked for Bachelorette, I never watched Juan Pablos season, so I have no connection to Claire and Tayshia would have been so good!
The reason they didn’t cast Mike Johnson is because he’s not very dynamic on camera. I don’t know how he is when he’s just hanging out, but when he’s interviewed, he really freezes up. Matt James is much more charming. I can’t wait for his season ❤️

As a black member of Bachelor nation, I feel robbed. The franchise served us this guy on a garbage can lid. Them choosing Matt James was a reactionary move because they finally realized black lives matters and quite frankly very passive aggressive on their part. We know nothing about him and I don't give a damn that he is Tyler's friend. They could have chosen a number of fan fav contestants to be the first black bachelor. And to those reading asking why we are complaining after we asked for diversity in leads, well because it was done under a cloud of insincerity and I would be remiss if I didn't call it out.

It kind of makes me angry that it took this much activism for ABC to cast a Black Bachelor, what is wrong with them. There are SO many reasons that it should have happened already: 1)Make the show as diverse as our country (a no-brainer), 2)change it up (the show was getting stale, what better way then to add different cultures to it, 3)reflect dating in the real world (I’ve dated more people with different skin color than me than people with similar skin color) and 4)PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR IT (what other reason should you need than that?!?) Ok rant over.
There's so many things I could say about this but what I'll say is that if they wanted their first black Bachelor they could and should have chosen Mike but Mike is far too outspokenly black for the producers liking. Matt seems lovely but color me suspect that he was chosen for a number of reasons that strike me as a black woman as having very little to do with the Bachelor being more progressive or interested in diversity. But ultimately, he'll be appealing to Bachelor Nation which is very white so they'll get their ratings and kudos for now having a black Bachelor.
Matt seems great. Can’t think of anything objectionable about him. It must be weird to feel ABC got peer-pressured into it, but it was always going to be tough to be the first. I think he’ll do great. THAT SAID... I’m a little exhausted of the entire Hannah Brown Cinematic Universe. Maybe an unpopular opinion.
I'll hold off setting thoughts in stone for now, but I disagree that he'll be the best bachelor. I feel like he's a player looking for a career bump instead of a wife. It might have been a knee jerk reaction by ABC, BUT I’m more excited for THIS season than I was for Bachelor Colton or Pilot Pete! The early announcement also gives them time to cast for more legitimate matches rather than Bubbly and Fun. In my opinion Matt will gravitate towards the Spunky and Sassy personalities and hopefully the ones actually ready for marriage and kids. Also after watching some of the Greatest Seasons of All-Time I believe the Bachelor could use a change of scenery and this could be an opportunity to film in New York instead. 💯👍
He seems like a great guy & a worthy lead - I wasn’t a fan of the announcement as Rachel pointed out (I’ve been loving her outspokenness, I imagine it’s hard to be franchises’ POC spokesperson/main representative - but I think she’s been doing a phenomenal job pointing out a lot of the franchise’s shortcomings). I really hope the franchise steps up to the demands from the petition - I think a lot of people will be watching the show with a more critical eye going forward & I just really want them to step up to the challenge.

I heard Mike didn’t film well on paradise. He was too quiet to hold the lead. Matt is very dynamic, equaling great TV.

Mike is really handsome with a good heart but IMO he wasn’t very emotional in paradise, maybe if he continues to stay relevant we could see him as a future bachelor. Matt was definitely the best choice between them right now.

Never mind the diversity, just a better cast of women period. Peter' s cast was awful, not many good ones there. His final2 (Mady & HannahAnn, plus Kelley) were the best ones. The rest were so emotional, OMG all the crying! A bunch of AshleyI' s.

I think the timing of him being the bachelor is gross honestly. Absolutely no reason they should have waited this long and it shouldn't have taken the movement which was clearly the motive! Yuck.

Gabrielle Desouter I can understand you being angry and/or frustrated with ABC but I really do not think it is fair to pass judgement on Matt James because his being too young and not black Enough (because his mother is white) doesn’t fit what you wanted in the first black bachelor. Let’s give him a chance to show his character because you can never expect an accurate result if you place people in boxes based on their: age, race, wealth, etc...

I think they've been looking for a suitable black male lead for a long time and have probably wanted Matt ever since Tyler introduced him to Bachelor Nation. Not sure why they didn't want Mike, but I think Matt is a lot cuter. And..... he has the anointed salmon jacket!!!

@mm I would think that would be a good transition that would draw the big diversity they want. And don't get me wrong, I think Mike is good looking too and doesn't have a darker skin tone. I just think Matt has a more handsome smile and eyes. Mike has a great character, and I respect his being an Air Force Veteran. I don't know what Matt is like, but I wonder if Mike would be able to carry a whole show because he's not very outgoing. I noticed that on Paradise. He didn't put himself out there much. I don't know what it was, but I heard something about Paradise was the reason he wasn't selected.

I’m just wondering why Taylor C. got passed over for bachelor now that he’s not with Gigi Hadid anymore? He was second in line and that’s usually the one that they take. I wasn’t sure why they went to pilot Pete although at the time I think Tyler was with Gigi. Matt James looks like a great choice too. I Met one of the Bachelor in Paradise contestants (through a mutual friend) last summer. It was right after the filming and I asked her who she thought the next bachelor would be (this was of course before they announced Peter). At the time she said either Peter or Tyler. I asked her ẅhy not Mike, he seemed like the best option. She told me that Mike was not that nice to the staff of Paradise behind the scenes and would make a lot of rude comments that were never aired on TV. She thought, that because of how he treated them, they might not want to have him full time as the lead. I was pretty bummed to hear that! I was really hoping they would pick him, but maybe that was a factor in their decision. This is just what she told me and of course, only one person's opinion of him and he was obviously not there to defend himself. I'm so not sure if it's true, but just what I heard, so no hate here! P.s I really think Tayshia should have been picked for Bachelorette, I never watched Juan Pablos season, so I have no connection to Claire and Tayshia would have been so good!
The reason they didn’t cast Mike Johnson is because he’s not very dynamic on camera. I don’t know how he is when he’s just hanging out, but when he’s interviewed, he really freezes up. Matt James is much more charming. I can’t wait for his season ❤️

I'm very excited to hear about Matt James!!!!! He has a fun instagram/tick tock presence. I think that I read that they take into account when selecting the leads, the number of Instagram followers that the person has. I don't know if that is true. I was tired with the Batchelor franchise, after the fiasco with Peter and the casting of Claire...I really wanted Tayshia....but I will definitely watch Matt.

I think they want to start with a brand new bachelor because of the negative with the recent casts. And with someone no one knows and have no expectation. I so pleased we get a black bachelor but I’m gutted it wasn’t mike.

As a black member of Bachelor nation, I feel robbed. The franchise served us this guy on a garbage can lid. Them choosing Matt James was a reactionary move because they finally realized black lives matters and quite frankly very passive aggressive on their part. We know nothing about him and I don't give a damn that he is Tyler's friend. They could have chosen a number of fan fav contestants to be the first black bachelor. And to those reading asking why we are complaining after we asked for diversity in leads, well because it was done under a cloud of insincerity and I would be remiss if I didn't call it out.

Any one else feel sorry for Clare? How sad to rush hers through...all over and wrapped in time for filming Matt’s series, which the producers are keen to promote to prove they take diversity seriously (too little too late in our eyes).

It kind of makes me angry that it took this much activism for ABC to cast a Black Bachelor, what is wrong with them. There are SO many reasons that it should have happened already:
1)Make the show as diverse as our country (a no-brainer),
2)change it up (the show was getting stale, what better way then to add different cultures to it,
3)reflect dating in the real world (I’ve dated more people with different skin color than me than people with similar skin color) and
4)PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR IT (what other reason should you need than that?!?)

My favs back and better then ever
There's so many things I could say about this but what I'll say is that if they wanted their first black Bachelor they could and should have chosen Mike but Mike is far too outspokenly black for the producers liking. Matt seems lovely but color me suspect that he was chosen for a number of reasons that strike me as a black woman as having very little to do with the Bachelor being more progressive or interested in diversity. But ultimately, he'll be appealing to Bachelor Nation which is very white so they'll get their ratings and kudos for now having a black Bachelor.

Matt seems great. Can’t think of anything objectionable about him. It must be weird to feel ABC got peer-pressured into it, but it was always going to be tough to be the first. I think he’ll do great.

I'll hold off setting thoughts in stone for now, but I disagree that he'll be the best bachelor. I feel like he's a player looking for a career bump instead of a wife. Being the first black bachelor also gives him guaranteed mention for life pretty much. Mike would have been such the better choice. All of BN was already on board for him. Matt has no idea what he's in for here. He will be the most scrutinized bachelor ever so any little thing he ever did or was perceived to do will come out. Every girl he ever rebuffed will come out. It's gonna be a mess. I feel it. I reckon we will see.
I really hope there will be more diversity in this season as well as claires season. I feel like they won't take in consideration that claire should have a diverse group of people and not just in age, but in race, size, everything. i hope they don't think that they'll have a diverse group of people in Matt's season and then go back to 90% white people :/
