Hill or earthing up is kind of old fashioned. It means you plant them shallow so don't have much trouble digging them up.I plant in containers now, very deep and also bury containers in ground.Nothing more to do until harvest. Then just pull whole container up and tip contents in barrow and search for potatoes. Put spent soil/compost in hole and plant garlic. Minimum 5kg or 12 lbs per bucket. Iv'e had 15kg from one. Almost a bit too easy. :)

Check out "HomeGrownVeg" TH-cam channel. He experiments a lot with containers, and has successfully planted store bought potatoes that grew "chits" (eyes) in 10 inch containers that yield him over a pound of potatoes 10-20 weeks later. He's got a great accent, too, lol

I never buy seed potatoes, just use a bag of store bought that has started to sprout and they’re fantastic. And way more economical. Certainly not a wide variety like you can get from seed potatoes but that’s not a problem for me so it works.

I wasn't going to grow again because my last few years I put in alot of work for nothing but TH-camrs like yourself and my grandmother gave me the push to keep trying. I'm always late so I'll be just getting late harvests. Seeds were short so I planted what I had stored from previous reserves from previous years that I stashed away and what I could find that would grow Purple potatoes, Pumpkins, cucumbers, sugar daddy peas, suger snap peas, shell peas, sweet peas, yellow pear cherry tomatoes and cantaloupe. Some of the pumpkin seeds I used were 9 years old saved from a very ripe pumpkin. The pumpkins are up and seem to be doing well so far.

I'm planning to plant another crop of potatoes. I planted two varieties for my early crop, Yukon gold and russet golden. My next crops are going to be fingerling and a red potato. My gardening this year iscomplicated by needing to dig up most of what I planted in March, April, May and early this monthbecause the maple tree that I planted everything underneath has to come down! I'm digging new beds in an area of my yard that I haven't dug in before. I find lots of interesting things when digging in my yard. I have concluded that the previous owners thought glass was a soil amendment! Beyond mundane things like glass, nails, tin cans, bits of pottery, and miscellaneous plastic things, I have found half a car battery, bullets, and yesterday, a half round hollow metal object filled with dirt. Always exciting!

      •lots of glass (of course...classic)
•lots of pieces of wrappers of some sort? (think: candy wrappers)
•a pretty neat lil eagle- shaped silver pin
annnnnd 1 honorable mention, my #1 favorite find (so far)//pride & joy:
•an absolutely stunning piece of fossilized/ "petrified" wood.
      !!! yeahhhh babyyy !!!
it's honestly a pretty nice sized piece, too..
*this particular treasure was not from this year, though. i actually found it about 9 years ago or so...when i initially started digging/ cleaningup the yard/setting up garden space after having just moved here.

I planted mine early this month, so I'll have a Fall harvest. Mine are in a container as I live in an apartment. No yard to speak of. At first I was afraid they'd rotted in the soil, but I finally have sprouts above soil. Also have garlic in another long planter and onions in another. I live in Kyushu Japan, so I'm sure they'll all be fine. It stays relatively warm until November.

I have an amazing amount of free potato plants that pop up in my compost pile from all the potato peels I throw in there. I never see eyes on the peels but somehow it's enough to grow a plant. When I dig them up it's really unbelievable how tiny the peels are that the plants grow out of. I have successfully transplanted them into the garden before but I think I'm going to fill a few walmart bags with compost and plant a few with the tops sticking out and see how it goes.

I live in S.C. so we just harvested our potatoes. I was able to buy 3 bags right before everything went south. We dug up right round 700 potatoes. This was my first year planting russets and was very pleased with the harvest; considering there were not that many potatoes in the bag. I will not be planting a 2nd crop but just like you said, I went back and planted some squash, peppers, and 2 watermelons plants in their place. It's such a blessing to have a long growing season.

I grow beautiful potatos just from potato eyes. I carefully remove them with a bit of potato all around them, but not too much. Place them on plate upside down to dry just a little bit, forming a film. Then I plant them in large pots and ad 3 to almost 4 inches of good garden soil, or manure, or whatever I have.
Now 7 to 10 weeks later, gorgeous healthy plants emerged, and I have them growing beautifully in several pots.
So we have our plants, and we still ate the potatos these came from.

if you have a good harvest, know that food never needs to go to waste. can it.
    it's easy.
all you need are some jars with rubber seals in the lid - a big pot and boiling water.
prepare the item the way you like it - stick it in the jar - seal w/lid - place jars in large pot cover and boil.
it will keep for about a year - 'til the next harvest!

  • @0626love

You are supposed to put as little soil on the potato as possible, well 1-2 inches tbh, just to cover it and to keep it moist. Then when it comes up and grows, you rake/plough more on to it - that is not extra work because the action of adding more soil is the same and only time when and how the weeding is done when grown professionally. That is how we do in our country on hectares of land. Potato wants to be near the surface.
But be sure to keep the new tubers covered enough so it wouldn't turn poisonous under the sun.

I’m in Florida and have 240 days for my season, but it’s usually best August through March or April. I do have some squash, peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, and watermelon growing right now. My sun sugar is killing it through the heat right now. I never get frost so technically I can grow all year but the peak of the summer is really hard on the plants.

I had a hard time getting sweet potato slips this year. They were a dollar each. I must have tried to order too late. As a result I planted 2.5 100 foot rows of Yukon golds with one bag of Pontiac reds. 250 potato plants.

I purchased the purple sweet potatoes and sprouted them in a dark bin with seed starter mix. I kept it in a warm spot for 2 weeks and the slips grew so long! Then I took them off the potatoes and potted them. They’re growing great leaves and I’m hopeful and excited for a decent harvest. This is my first time trying anything. 😬

cruciferousvegetable that’s why I’m hoping that mine do something. I put the potatoes in a container with seed starter and kept it covered with plastic film and created a mini greenhouse for two weeks indoors. After that two weeks I had massive slips and I planted them outside. They’re thriving now and I really do hope to see actual sweet potatoes in a few months. Our warm season ends in mid October so that might be just enough time.

Sulphur is only for preventing scab, not for yields. I dip my potatoes in sulphur powder before I put them in the ground. I have no idea if it is worth it or not, but I do it anyway. Sounds like your potatoes are doing really well. You can fertilize some if you want, with something like a 4-4-4 or so. Don't add too much nitrogen (the first 4 number). I just toss a small handful on each plant. If you have problems with potato beetles (mine are starting to hit now), spray with spinosad. It is organic. Sometimes you see it under "Captain Jack's Deadbug." That is just one brand. Just look for spinosad in the ingredients. You may need to only spray once or twice. Any hardware store will carry it. I've used neem oil and BT, but nothing organic worked against the beetles until I found spinosad. Good luck!
