the rules are clear that the ball simply needs to be within playing distance. the charge does not need to be an active part of attempting to play the ball. The rules are clear that a shielding defender can be charged by a defender legally after which the defender can play the ball, so long as the charge is shoulder to shoulder. Yeah I rarely disagree with Wiebe but I gotta disagree on the second one in the SKC vs STL game. That first one was absolutely shoulder to shoulder. Liebold got outmuscled. That 2nd one? Naw man. Klauss did not attempt to play the ball. He catches him in the back of the shoulder, not squarely, and absolutely does shove off. I was shocked that one stood. Sporting got outplayed physically but that second goal should never have stood.
The Laws of the Game draw a clear distinction between "attempting to play the ball" and "the ball is within playable distance", and the rules on shoulder-to-shoulder charges use the latter language. See my comment for details.

At this point, Andrew is just reading off the script MLS provided. I don't know if anything he says is his opinion anymore. This used to be a good weekly video.
Of the Unkels, I wish it was Christina we were stuck with, not Ted. But now she gets to share a studio with Thierry Henry while her husband is doing...this stuff.
This last weekend was the first time, following a new policy from the league meant to be implemented at the start of the season before the PRO strike happened. Also as part of the change, time wasting seems to be more under control
The new rule if a player goes down and takes any time getting up, they have to leave the field for 2 minutes and wait for a stop in play to go back out is the worst rule. Watching it play out in New England's game was terrible. I think its just gonna lead to more players pretending they're fine when they aren't and getting injured. It also awards teams that are physical and try to injure other teams players.
@@SamualHadge I believe if a player is injured to the point of needing to leave the field, they have exceptions and won't be penalized. Unless it's the final rounds of a competition, it's in everyone's best interest to receive medical attention ASAP. Even in the final rounds, an injured player will perform worse than a healthy player, so I doubt any serious injuries will remain on the field. Even staying off of the field for two minutes likely won't impact the game, and you could argue that keeping the momentum of the game going would be more beneficial, since the team with the injured player usually has the ball. Could an injury be misdiagnosed as minor? Sure, but that's always a risk in sports. I don't think we'll have any issues with the new rule, other than bad calls by the ref. Those happen anyway so I wouldn't blame it on the rule
Not a bang bang play, Klauss definitely fouled Agada. Not at all shocked that the official MLS reporters are overlooking horrendous officiating again. The Durkin one was less problematic, but Klauss got away with a dangerous play. He didn’t even play the ball remotely, you can’t just shoulder a guy for fun and call it shoulder to shoulder
On the Klaus freaking shoulder charge, there was no absolutely no attempt on the ball at all....good lord. I am not the expert though, I'll give you the the benefit of the doubt and will attempt this every time I play soccer, everything will go well... I will agree, Sporting should have paid back the physicality when the ref continuously let it go; he would have lost control of the game eventually. Doesn't mean its not a freaking foul.
Us Sounders fans didn't like how Ragen's wasn't on purpose and his leg was already on the ground before his cleat touched him, making it impossible to avoid (which us Sounders get cleated every game and opponents rarely get carded, yet alone a red). We definitely agree Alex Roldan's was fair.
Gauld was 45 degrees over when shoved from behind; that’s reckless and no accident. Then there is the clear contact on the back of the leg; nobody gets out of that by claiming accidental contact, or “his leg was already on the ground”. It might have been called as two yellows in less than a second but the end result would be the same. Both the Sounders and their fans could use more composure: consistently turning up the dirty play is not going to get them back in the playoff race, but using the skill that is there on the roster might.
Players in the SJ-LAG game were jumping up after fouls clearly still in a little bit of pain trying to shake it off instead of rolling around like they were dead. So at least in that game the players got the word and altered their behavior because of the new rules around this.
Well, it's mainly because they signed a deal with AppleTV to essentially hide their games from anyone except those willing to dish out even more money which means no chance of expanding their viewership.
I have to disagree with you yet again Wiebe, because what a surprise you do not understand the laws of the game. Law 12 from IFAB in regards to Handling the Balls states: "It is an offence if a player: -deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball -touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised -scores in the opponents’ goal: directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental" There are three parts to this law that we can look at. The first part is deliberately touches the ball. Well his arm is behind him as he is going down towards the grown and his arm is going towards the ground to brace himself so NO, he is not guilty of deliberately handling the ball. The third part is irrelevant as he is the defending player and no goal was scored as a result which leaves the send part only to look at. Was his arm in an unnatural position with the intent to make himself unnaturally bigger? Again no. His arm was coming down to brace himself for the impact as he was sliding into the challenge to block the attempted cross. Furthermore the ball is clearly deflected off of his left calf before it goes between his legs (which is the only reason it goes between his legs) and strikes his arms. So not only was this a case of BALL TO HAND this was a case of the ball being deflected off of his LEG first which altered the trajectory of the path of the ball leaving him with less than half of a second to react while he was falling towards the ground. This was NOT a handball by the letter of the law. This was a horrible call by the on-field ref (who had a fairly decent game aside from this call) and this absolutely should have been overturned by VAR. And if you had any clue about the laws of the game, and after sever years of hosting this show you have shown week after week that you literally have none, you would have known this as well.
@@happiestmistake1504 The only thing odd about that play is that VAR recommended a review. It's a PK all day. It'll be interesting to hear why they thought it wasn't during Inside Video Review this week.
After review, while I can see Ragens foul being red, how does a LITERAL 5 min review state “clear and obvious”??? Clear and obvious should be a quick “oh I see what you mean” check and be done with it. Not 20 slowmo rewinds until someone convinces the other one to change the call… again, don’t disagree with the red but that is a fail on the refs for it taking that long.
Was it 5 minutes? He makes the review motion at 39.55 and we see the player almost in the tunnel at 42.50. So about 3 minutes total to get to the monitor, look at it, get back on the pitch to eject the player, have the player complain, and then have the player run the length of the pitch to where we saw him leaving the field.
@@RysloFC Did they actually take that long to come to their decision or were they waiting for a stoppage in play for the on field review to take place? There was an attack initially going on so a delay would be normal.

@@DukeTrout Guys leg was in the wrong place at the wrong time, unfortunate, but not a dangerous play. Nobody from Vancouver was was making it an issue.
Bang bang indeed. Bang #1 was shoving from behind a player already halfway to the ground; bang #2 was stepping on him while he was on the ground. Both reckless, intent doesn’t matter. Some of the Sounders fans on the reddit stream were claiming pushing a player is legal: LOTG do not agree and spell it out clearly. Sympathies for Seattle’s poor start, but the road back is to accentuate the skill, not the toughness.
There were four flagrant fouls by Seatle before the 1st red card. They were playing dirty. After the 2nd Red, Vancouver stopped pressing to score. They could have run up the score; they deserve recognition. Seatle should get fined for making assault part of the game plan.

@@TheFranchiseCA To be fair, he often does a good job of explaining the printed words. Sometimes he gets the real-life interpretations correct, but when he misses he misses big.

Regan wasn’t engaging in foul play, he accidentally stepped on the opponent. Yellow? Yeah that makes sense. Red, that’s real harsh. Also, given that the review took forever it clearly wasn’t a clear and obvious error.

the rules are clear that the ball simply needs to be within playing distance. the charge does not need to be an active part of attempting to play the ball. The rules are clear that a shielding defender can be charged by a defender legally after which the defender can play the ball, so long as the charge is shoulder to shoulder. This is why shielding the ball is an integral part of the game and why having strength matters.
@@JayseabeeSTLthat wasn’t shielding. Nor was it a play on the ball.
@@thecrowing87100%. SKC player didn’t even know Klaus was on the field until he blindsided him. It wasn’t even the right soccer play - it was a bad touch, just go for the ball 3 yards away.
Shoulder to shoulder 😂😂 come on this is football not rugby
That's definitely a charge
@@footballforlife2643a charge is a legal action under the laws of the game so long as the circumstances present are similar to the ones seen by Durkin and Klauss’ situations.
Awful takes this week, ngl
"If he doesn't extend his arm out then it's a shoulder to shoulder challenge"
Hahaha haha that is the dumbest take I've ever heard. The arm did come out so it's the a shoulder to shoulder challenge. Haha you could justify every single foul if you thought that way. I don't think it's a red. But definitely a foul and a yellow. The other half of the "take". He was slow and so he cut across the path of the defender....haha he did that cause that is good soccer. How is that justifying it as not a foul. Weibe..... my man... seriously, you should have thought this one through before opening your mouth. Haha nit I do appreciate the comedy take for the week.
Most of the rest of the calls were good. Love watching this video each week. Keep it coming!
Weibe: player skill and speed is now a factor in whether a call should be made. Luna was too slow so the defender is okay taking him down--he didn't have a chance to start. What a joke!
@@JayseabeeSTL All balls are within 'playable distance' if you take out the opposing players. Klaus is literally moving in the opposite direction of the ball (he's moving AWAY from the ball) to put in this body check. I like STL way better than SKC... but that was a foul.
It’s Klauss

Klaus was not playing the ball. He lined up the defender, took him down, and then turned to go after the ball.
I have to ask, Andrew, do you really believe what you said to be true or are you just coming up with a story and sticking to it like a 9th grade term paper?
At this point, Andrew is just reading off the script MLS provided. I don't know if anything he says is his opinion anymore. This used to be a good weekly video.

The secons STL goal was wrong. He played the man not the ball. its so obvious
Since when they start announcing fouls like American football
This was the first weekend.
First week in MLS. It's been used elsewhere including the WWC.
I can't believe Sosa's wasn't reviewed at all.
Yeah it's a foul. Definitely in the Grey. He got really lucky that the ball was close enough that he could disguise it as going for the ball.
“Klaus” 🤡
Klauss was 10 yards from the ball and moving in the opposite direction. He made ZERO effort to win the ball until Agada was on the ground.
He completely knows wrong this rule. Two of these were fouls.

The whole "annouce the decision to the stadium" is a bad idea
Ted Unkel strikes again.
Classic Unkel screwing over the Sounders last year then helping the Timbers this year. Unkel and his VAR team are always awful
I didn’t see them actually put ANY of the new rules into play this weekend. What’s up this that? Are the refs afraid?
Players in the SJ-LAG game were jumping up after fouls clearly still in a little bit of pain trying to shake it off instead of rolling around like they were dead. So at least in that game the players got the word and altered their behavior because of the new rules around this.
this is why nobody watches MLS
Well, it's mainly because they signed a deal with AppleTV to essentially hide their games from anyone except those willing to dish out even more money which means no chance of expanding their viewership.
Guys… it’s a foul.
Agree with all decisions
Why is Ted unkle still a ref
About that intro, when in the hell did we get nfl explanations??? Is this part od the new rules
This is what the league is moving towards for transparency.
@KRowDreamForge tbh, I don't hate it. To much controversy around refs
The red cards this week was insane especially the Seattle vs Vancouver game
Willy Agada is a flop artist. That said, STL does play an overly physical style and does toe the line.
This video reminds me how much I hate St Louis.
Amen brother 😂
😿
I have to disagree with you yet again Wiebe, because what a surprise you do not understand the laws of the game.
Law 12 from IFAB in regards to Handling the Balls states:
"It is an offence if a player:
-deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball
-touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised
-scores in the opponents’ goal:
directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper
immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental"
There are three parts to this law that we can look at.
What about LAFC vs NYRB?
What about it?
@@MrCho14 the PK call
@@happiestmistake1504 The only thing odd about that play is that VAR recommended a review. It's a PK all day. It'll be interesting to hear why they thought it wasn't during Inside Video Review this week.
@@MrCho14 I don’t agree with it being 100% a pk, however yes I would like to hear what led to the decision
@@MrCho14it took VAR over 2:30 to even send the center ref to the monitor.
@@RysloFC Did they actually take that long to come to their decision or were they waiting for a stoppage in play for the on field review to take place? There was an attack initially going on so a delay would be normal.
@@MrCho14 VAR took that long to review. Play continued after the foul for about 6-10 seconds.
@@RysloFC Is that all the action that took place before the next stoppage? Yeah, that's a long time to delay to look at that if that's the case.

Brother Men I advise you to seriously check the rules
First one is clear
Second is not clear
Andrew Wiede, you sold your soul. This is not honest commentary. This is playing the part of a good network partner. You have the opportunity to make the game better. This week you kowtow to the league and PRO and say they got it right. You lost cred.
the second one looked bad. if that is allowed then put it in the rules. that in fact may be an interesting concept and interesting version of footbal. but with the current rules, that should not be allowed
HIT THE WEIGHTS KC BABIES
Weibe on drugs? Klaus is 100% a foul. He isn't playing the ball at all. The direction he's taking is to take the skc player out. Shoulder to shoulder doesnt matter if hes straight up body checking someone. honestly think I'm taking crazy pills listening to this
Regan is also not a red. Yellow yes but never a red. If this is a red, we'd see reds in nearly every other game
Wtf is this analysis?
DIdn't review the Red Bull penalty I see. Seems about right...
Sorry, Ragen did not intentionally step on that guy, it was a bang bang play, not a Red.
Intentional doesn't matter. We've seen much more 'accidental' plays which still qualified for a red.
Mind reading should never be a part of the game. It was serious foul play. These are supposed to be world class athletes, responsible for the results of their actions.
@@DukeTrout Guys leg was in the wrong place at the wrong time, unfortunate, but not a dangerous play. Nobody from Vancouver was was making it an issue.
@@jamesparsons9010 Bullshit. That’s not at all how the rules work. If it was, there would never be a red card and soccer would be MMA.

Paused it to say, surely he's being sarcastic about the hockey check, right???

Everybody please remember that Wiebe is only trying to give controversial takes to get extra clicks for MLS. He knows the rules and specifically misinterprets them to generate discussion
What makes you think he actually knows the rules down to this level?
@@MrCho14This is an excellent point. Never assume commentators know the Laws well. Wiebe is not a referee.
@@TheFranchiseCA To be fair, he often does a good job of explaining the printed words. Sometimes he gets the real-life interpretations correct, but when he misses he misses big.

The fact that this is MLS does not matter. They are still a FIFA sanctioned league and as such they are subjected to the same Laws that all other leagues are subjected to. They are not different. @@richardgena6913 doesn't matter how close he was to the ball bro, a step on the calf is a step on the calf.

As a (real) football fan, I didn't see anything wrong with the Klauss hit. If the game was played more like that and they got rid of all that bullsh*t flopping...it would be a more respectable -sport- thing to watch.
Regan wasn’t engaging in foul play, he accidentally stepped on the opponent. Yellow? Yeah that makes sense. Red, that’s real harsh. Also, given that the review took forever it clearly wasn’t a clear and obvious error.
Accident or not does not matter. We've seen that in much more accidental cases than this.
Intent doesn’t matter. Results matter. It was serious foul play, no intent to harm is required.
Accidentally shoved an already-falling player to the ground from behind before stepping on the back of his leg. That’s two yellows and the same result. We’re not just talking about the foot on leg here.
Strong disagree on both the STL and SEA takes.
