I hear the word “monolithic” in your lectures a lot. What does that really mean in the context of architecture and construction? What is so monolithic about a steel and glass dome?

By "monolithic," I mean that all of the structure's elements are strongly (and, more importantly, stiffly) to one another so that when one piece is loaded, all of the other elements "feel" it. (Think of a frame of toothpicks connected by marshmallows--not monolithic--vs. one connected by very rigid connections--monolithic).
