I'm a guitar player who's diving into the world of synthesizers for the first time. I know I'm late to this video but after watching the whole thing I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you showing us how you build these sounds from the ground up. Not only am I learning about the gear you're using, but I'm learning about making new sounds in general. Your personality is also quite joyful and inspiring! Thanks Cuckoo for sharing your talents and spirit with the rest of us! Peace and love to you from the States.
Someone commented here that until they saw this tutorial they had thought OP-1 was a toy. I think OP-1 is a "toy". We play, we get joy and pass time. Then sometimes we find really great music, or loops, or whatever. Suddenly the toy, and play, lead us to something more solid and less transient. Cuckoo, you seem a little doubtful by the end of this video, but you must be exhausted, you put so much into these tutorials. I hope you are properly rewarded for what you do because without your tutorials I don't think I would be able to work with any of TE's stuff. Maybe I don't have the right kind of brain. You do, and you are a translator as well as an influencer. Keep smiling.
Excellent tutorial. It's great how you not only show how to do things technically, but go through your thought process in sound creation as well. Very inspiring and I really appreciate it!
Hi Cuckoo. I finally took the plunge and ordered an OP-1, it will arrive tomorrow. So I am watching all your OP 1 videos again. I first got a PO33 after watching your videos and bought the sound pack you made for that from your website. I think I will end up doing the same for your OP1 packs once I have had some time with it. I will support you as much as I can as you have given me so much inspiration and helped me understand these instruments. The gifts you give are immeasurable. I love your channel, I have loved to see you progression as an artist and also as a video maker and presenter/speaker/teacher (can't think of the right word). I just wanted to thank you and I hope that your well. I can't wait to put what I've learned from your videos into practice 😊
I am saving up for my OP-1, watching your videos is making the wait bearable and I'm also feeling confident for when I turn it on because I'm learning so much. Keep up the good work brother
OP-1 gangster.. That's something to put on the CV for sure :) I'm absolutely loving the new CWO! it's brilliant! A few days ago I put up this video demoing it. Just search for OP-1 CWO CUCKOO or something and you'll find it.
Great job Big C! Wonderful to see a different workflow to get results from a machine I've spent countless hours with making my own flow. Cheers to you for this detailed tutorial.
If you press and hold on the user slot you're working in, it will start saving the patch as a "snapshot" that can quickly be recalled. You must however get into the computer to give it a proper name, or to delete snapshots, or to move them into custom folders etc.
Thanks again. Yeah well.. for me personally I think the OP-1 get's most bang for the buck. But you'll want to feed it with samples every now and then and then a S2 or antyhing you like really is a great companion. I still haven't tried the volcas. They sound fun, but perhaps a little narrow.
I know this is old but I was looking for something to ticker with. And the OP-1 was on my list. After watch your videos, I pulled the trigger. Thanks for such nice videos. Cheers :)
Thank you for the tutorial, many great ideas. Just bought that OP-1 and I'm so excited discovering all its capabilities. I'm not really musician but more been in Djing and some music production, and it looks like this little piece of hardware was made for me !
I used my taxes and got my OP-1 and my favorite thing to do is put the cwo on everything xD I’m still teaching myself through multiple youtubers. Thank you for this video!
You make this look so much fun to use. And it really is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Looks toyish. But I now realize. Its extremely versatile and POWERFUL. It can produce unusual FM type percussion. But so easily love it. And as an FM fan this is very appealing to me. Having owned a DX7. Well done sir. Im going to have to invest in the OP1. Ive been seeking a mobile all in one unit. And this may be 6 years old. But its very hard to beat. And the price tag is now justified, at least to me. Many thought this was way overpriced when it first hit the market. But looking at how you put this drum kit together. It really isnt. Thanks so much for this demo...
I felt like I was watching daft punk or someone on that level of visibility make something in the studio that nobody knows how it was made. By the end I really fell in love with the result.
Really enjoyed that man, always interesting to see others' approaches. The FM preset you use at 26:07 is awesome. How do you get that clean pulsey/punchy sound out of it, were you using an effect?
You are supremely talented sir! Thanks for taking the time to make these vids :) The Jury is still out on whether it's worth keeping my OP-1 or not, trying to use it as much as possible. It doesn't really do anything other gear I have doesn't do, and it doesn't really do anything BETTER than other gear I have doesn't do, But that other gear doesn't roll everything up into one package, I'm enjoying myself, but we'll see if it was worth the money In the meantime thanks for the guidance :)
+Dee Lux hey, thanks mate! I think the OP-1 is a companion for life. The thing it does so well is to bring it all together, in a fun and lovely way. Here's a video of me and Andrew Huang jamming out a song together with the OP-1. This stuff is perfect for the OP-1. th-cam.com/video/8er3mngKf28/w-d-xo.html
definitely keeping that in mind as I work on finishing my first track as I'm writing this, your videos have been crucial, you should get T.E to kick you back some $ One question, which do you bring to a desert island: OP-1 or Octotracvk?
Yet another great Cuckoo video. Some amazing sounds, and it's nice to see the process of finding them, inspiring one's own journey into the vast possibilities that exist within this small but mighty unit. I'm still looking at videos and reading up on the OP-1. I also found a Strymon Big Sky on an unmissable special offer in the Black Friday sales, so I'll be combining the two soon, which potentially should be nothing short of epic. Keep up the good work. And I will check you out on Patreon when my bank account has recovered from Black Friday.
You Sir are amazing :) I was after the information on copy and paste lift information - much appreciate and love your work - always sound good and have been watching your work on Instagram regarding you new animated series.. is there a way to buy them digitally and support you. They look amazing so keep up the quality work :)
+Andy Gardner glad to hear it, mate! Regarding the animation. We're in the early days of rolling out the film to festivals. We'll be doing that exclusively first, before exploring how to eventually sell it online or on an old school disk format. I've also been meaning to show the film to my Patreon supporters. For a limited time.
Hey Cuckoo! Love your videos and stuff dude! I like playing your jams in the background while I'm working! Quick question, I like to play electronic drum parts live. With a V-drums type of kit. Can I connect the OP-1 to my computer and trigger midi notes (like kick, snare, hats) with my drum triggers?
+aizo yurei Hey, cool, thanks! I have played the OP-1 from external midi, via a USB MIDI host, and it worked well. It was many years ago. From what I remember there was a velocity bug at the time, where the OP-1 buffered the velocity in a weird way, so that wrong velocities was applied to wrong notes most of the time. But this must be fixed by now. If it's not fixed, just use some means to always send maximum velocity :) I was surprised that it even sensed velocity in the first place..
EXCELLENT! I've been itching to get one ever since finding your videos. I've downsized my set up a lot and would like to do some experimenting with playing the op-1's drum kit.
Holy crap, how old is the op1... I've been considering it and now I'm seeing it was already going full speed in 2013... I'm starting to wonder whether the tech is a bit dated already. I know about the field, but 2 grand... not right now. Thanks for all your videos! I've been religiously following your mega tutorials on the Syntakt and Digitakt.
I had a question, could the OP-1 make a 'warped vintage record' sound like the ZVex Lo-Fi Loop Junky guitar pedal? I think it'd be interesting to make a drum beat on there with a slight vintage pop and wobble

Sold my bike, H4n field recorder, and PS4 to buy my OP-1... well worth the sacrifices. Thanks for the great work dude
Ha ha, I like your spirit! :)
more fun and useful too!
I have my car to sell.
Oh no! It's only worth half an op-1...
whoa. i don't know about that....bike and field recorder.... should have worked another gig and kept everything :/.
You're simply the best OP-1 teacher out there... I think TE owes you a free lifetime supply of their toys. Thanks!!

Absolutely. I think just because it's so small, people assume it should be cheap. I think the current price is just right.
People who say the Op-1 is a toy should really see this video. This is beautiful.
I just got an OP-1 to play with while stuck at home. Your videos are an incredible resource, thank you!
That little jam at the end was awesome, you should release that someday
Just bought an OP-1 after having watched so many of your videos! Your skill is an inspiration.
Ooo.. Nice :) I hope you'll like it!
The potential on that machine is endless, so glad I bought one!
Fantastic demo + improv. Just picked up an OP-1 and this video has me psyched about learning the ins and outs of it.
Cool! Keep it up! It's probably the most delightful of portable companions :-)
Making drum kits really tops the list of fun things to do with the OP-1. Thanks for demonstrating so well.
Yeah, this is more like a musical platform. It's really fun.
That sound at 3:19 - the op1 never ceases to amaze
like the clever use of the vanity shaving mirror
Obviously not used for shaving, so at least it has some uses.
he might get the itch one day lather up and go clean shaven
old bladder Horn shaving while jamming on the OP-1 would be sweet!
nick's, blood and shaving foam,
a nice op-1 tune title
Wow. Things were going at a nice easy pace, then you showed your true keyboard skills after the break was made. Can't wait to get my OP-1.
Great tutorial strangely beautiful tune too. Love the irony of the shaving mirror...
I know this is old but I was looking for something to ticker with. And the OP-1 was on my list. After watch your videos, I pulled the trigger. Thanks for such nice videos. Cheers :)

That improvisation at the end showed what a great musician you are.
That final jam was lovely. Thank you!
y0! Btw digital FM synthesis (notably Yamaha's on the fabled DX7) is actually Phase Modulation so you weren't wrong!
Lovely tutorial. Excellent funky jam with the sounds a nice bonus. Well done and much appreciated!
One of the best op-1 tutorials ive seen. so cool.
BRO, i love your set design. this is a most visually charming tutorial.
Hey T, thanks!
I could listen to this all day
Thanks Cuckoo! Just got me an OP1. This tutorial is awesome! Love your other videos too.
Really amazing. Never knew what one could do with the OP-1. Always thought this was some kind of toy.
Great Video ... the idea of reflecting your face with the mirror is wonderfullllll.
Thank you for sharing your fun process!
This is such a creative way of using the OP1!
Thank you!!
I used my taxes and got my OP-1 and my favorite thing to do is put the cwo on everything xD I’m still teaching myself through multiple youtubers. Thank you for this video!
Love the 'picture in picture' lol :) Great video, nice tutorial.

You must be an accomplished pianist i'm sure. And great singing, really took off there.
thanks! Yeah I know.. what happened! Maybe the unit is waiting for the new OS update as much as I am :)
You got featured in the Teenage Engineering newsletter!! congrats cukoo
Absolutely love your style, thanks for giving me so many ideas to get weird
Thanks a lot for this awesome video teaching me new things to do with the OP1.
23:25
sick finger drumming!
Truly amazing. Thanks for the insight, the jam and the inspiration. Cheers. Lee
Lovely music and sounds!
Great tecnics you have, i need some lessons mate. lolllll
great as always. I just wonder, why your OP-1 thinks, that the FM synthesizer is Phase ^^
That was dope.. definitely helped me decide what synth to get
Brilliant. You're very talented.
loved the freestyle!! so cool
The jam at 27:30 also! I need that stufffff
Hey man just wondering what that sound you where playin in this video at 26:04!!! It sounded amazing anything would help! I need that sound
You are supremely talented sir! Thanks for taking the time to make these vids :)

Ahh.. thanks. I didn't know that!
thanks Cuckoo excellent tutorial to create drums kit in op-1 :)
Great tutorial Cuckoo! I'm really looking forward to getting my OP-1 later this month. Is finding the zero-point a real hassle when resampling?
Recommend 2 all beginners op-1! Realy helpful < thanx Cuckoo!
That was beautiful.

+Hakon Soreide thanks mate! Yeah, the BluSky is really great and quick to work with.
Thank you, this is an inspiring video. You've helped me out of a dark and confusing corner :)
Cuckoo! You're a certified gangster on that instrument! How have you been using the new DNA and CWO- are you digging those?
Drums are so cool. Thank you for sharing. :D
Yeah, man, this is excellent. Great tutorial.
You are professional. Keep up the good work. Would you still recommend a op1 or is volca line or stylophone more bang f.b?
last song is awesome
Wow. Super helpful. I appreciate this so much. THANK YOU!
so sick
That jam at the end 🤘
Awesome
I definitely thought it was overpriced at first look but the cool video game graphics and portable features make this awesome if one has the cash.
Love it!
Thanks for all your videos!
I wonder
How did you route the audio out from OP-1 ?
Is it through two phonejacks ?
thanks
Very inspiring. Thank you!
Amazing work
If you ask OP-1 owners I think most of them will say it's affordable.
Love it. As always:-) wants me to get my op-1 and make sounds. That's what I'm going to do right now. Cheers

Wicked, I want one!
super kwl.....................keep it on.
Very impressive!!
Great video as always! Can I ask what microphone you use to record your voice for the vid? Very clear.
reminds me of playing with a Korg Electribe, cooking waves into a drum kit. only this OP-1 sounds much fatter!
superb clip!
9:59
The joy of synthesis
loving your videos cuckoo !

GREAT VIDEOS! VERY HELPFUL. BUYING THE OP-1. CAN YOU RECOMEND ANY TOOLS TO COMPLIMENT IT?
charlie bowlen the op-1 doesn't need any tools, but I've seen a few people use volcas with it.
Thank you !

Wouldn't the snare be more snare like a couple octaves up?
This is so cool man. Great work.
