    I have wanted solar panels for almost half my life. Who wouldn't want free electricity? Now with todays used panels selling for a fraction of what they cost new and getting a fantastic deal on S9 miners, I can build the starter mining system of my dreams! I hope you enjoy the content and let me know what you think in the comments :)

    Subscribed. Also looking forward to the quintessential sequel in every home mining saga, a.k.a. “My wife didn’t realize how loud these were, and long story short, I’m really into immersion cooling now!”
    It’s probably a good idea anyway because the thermal cycling you will get from the miners turning on and off every night will wear down the board over time
    I was curious if you found a way to safely power down the machines when the panels aren’t making enough juice?

    • @ThomasMiata

      😂 yeah I considered playing around with immersion cooling right after setting these up and then realizing the heat would be awesome is captured and used in the house.
      But I just grabbed 2 of them and turned them down to 800watts, which makes them much quieter, and have them helping with the heating this winter. One in the basement and one in my upstairs office 🤙

    The thing that put me back is the upfront cost of the solar system, but mostly because ASICS are very power hungry, so I would need a lot of solar panels..
    And batteries to run miners without sun...Do you run them only when it's sunny?

      The cost of this system probably will not outperform just buying 3k worth of bitcoin 65 days ago prices. I have them on timers to only run 10 hours a day right now.
      Look into grid tie systems and devices that automatically discharge so it can never go out to the grid. Then contact some professionals about permits or whatever..

    Awesome video! How much watts does your miners take up? What about gpu mining instead of ASICS?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Currently I run 6 s9s at 900watts each for 12 hours a day.
      So about 65kw per day of power consumed while my solar will produce about 20kw per sunny day during the summer. Note: the consumed power can be adjusted to be more or less, depending on how many and how long I run each miner. (I use WiFi power strips to schedule when each can run)
      As for gpu mining: personally, I don’t waste my time on shitcoining. It’s bitcoin only for me. I’ll take “less profit” (measured in dollars) so that I don’t have to sell the shitcoin for dollars (at a capital gains loss 30% or more of profit) just to buy bitcoin and put it in my long term savings.
      The financial system as we know it is a scam and shitcoins perpetuate that scam. Opt out.. buy and hold bitcoin for a better future. 💜

      there's going to be a handful of cryptos that survive, some people will still want to be able to use on-chain transactions vs sing lightning, once lightning has been around 10-20yrs with a track record as good as btc then ppl might leave some of the other blockchains, but expecting btc to get more than 80 percent dominance is just silly, even gold didnt drive out silver or copper, they were still used money as well, same as grain or ammo etc...

    Nice, just how many watts those 26 panels can ideally generate? what is their status early in the morning and at sun set? how much do they generate at different times of day?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each panel is about 250watts. Early am does not produce much power (maybe 500watts total) because of shadows from the many trees I have in my yard. I get 6-10 hours of full sun on my garage roof per day. In the summer the roof can produce up to 17kw per day. In the winter, it seems to be closer to 5-10kw per day

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cafrmen no battery. The asic miners are turned on and off using timers.
      With the amount of power the miners consume, leaving them on all day, and collecting all the power from solar would require 4x as many panels and a very expensive battery bank.
      I built a solar array that used very inexpensive parts, but that means I can only run the miners for 4-8 hours per day. My solar array cost was $2000 usd and my miners cost $1000 (miners are much cheaper now)
      System cost to build and power for 2-3 years is about 0.12 bitcoin. It’s been 19 months, and my total mined is 0.062.

    I don't know what you did to get it "live" - between 7:22 and when you show the unit again at around 7:45. I'm assuming your system is completely isolated from the grid. So your miners use more power than your system creates? Do you have them attached separately? Or can the grid feed into your solar output? But your solar production (if any excess) will not go into the grid? Do I understand this correctly? I've been trying to figure out how to set this sort of thing up. There's the Growatt you unpacked at the beginning ... anything else?

    • @ThomasMiata
      @ThomasMiata  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Note: If you have this many questions, you might want to seek the help of a professional electrician. I’m not a pro, and you shouldn’t listen to anything I say.
      Theoretically:
      As far as using a grid tie inverter, you can attach the inverter to a generator or a sine wave inverter to “trick” it into working. Or, you can purchase an off grid, battery-less inverter. You may also be able to grid tie, depending on your local laws and how they apply to automatically controlled systems that will never send power back to the grid. (You really should consult professionals here)
      My miners us a lot more power then this system can produce, so I added WiFi power strips to automatically turn the miners on and off based on when the sun would be out.
      Note: would I do this again? No… if I had not spent all that time and money on this solar array/miner purchase, and instead just purchased that amount of bitcoin, I would have 2.5x as much bitcoin right now, with none of the wait.
      I estimate another 8 months of running this system before it “breaks even” in bitcoin terms compared to just buying btc with cash and waiting.
