- I've finally passed my private pilots skills test (or checkride) at Duxford aerodrome and imperial war museum. This video will tell you what I did and is an informal visual 'podcast' of what I went through and how I nearly cocked it right up!
Hi Guys, *_STILL UPLOADING TODAY_* so please *SUBSCRIBE!*
Had a wicked time filming in some abandoned tunnels yesterday, so come along for the ride and *_BANG THAT SUB!_*
Agree this is a life changer . Passed my gft in 2004 and have had the best times of my life thanks to my ppl. Always embrace what a privilege it is to fly. Thanks for your brilliant account of it all
Just passed my skills test today! Those nerves were quite wrecking, I am training in the UK as well so most of this really resonated with me and helped with my planning. Thanks James! Here is to us airmen and safe landings in the future!
Congratulations James, I wish to pass my soon too with your suggestions 😊🎉
You can do it! Do you want a guided diversion ground school?
Very very good sounding exam. Very thankful you shared your experience and tipsm
Hi James, I passed my skills test today and I promised myself that id watch this video when I did having followed you throughout as the vibe you are giving is so relatable! I'm absolutely knackered! A good day nonetheless
Well done mate! Top work. Let me know when you come to Duxford. Great place to fly and some lovely places nearby to stay. Excellent pubs!
Thanks for explaining everything so well. Your plumbing videos helped me fit out a couple of bathrooms, and now you are helping me do the PPL. What a contrast!
Well-done mate....I was exhausted just listening!! I'm doing my PPL/ H. 👍
Congratulations - did this 20 Years ago - great to delight in your delight. Intersting how it changes you :-)
Massive congratulations! I’ve just started this journey myself, currently on hour 3 😂 long way to go.
I found you on TH-cam a good few years ago from your plumbing stuff and I had no idea at all that we shared this love for aviation. Only just stumbled across this video today somehow (damn that algorithm).
I hope you’ve had some great adventures since passing, you’re a top fella, keep up the good work here on TH-cam and don’t let anyone dim that personality. Stay safe! 👊🏽👍🏽
Well done, the initial skills test is the culmination of a lot of hard work.. It's a very long time since I did both my PPL A and H and I can still remember how nerve wracking those days were.
Hold Tight!!! Totally by accident when I first trained and started out as a plumber/sparky I found your videos which gave me quite a lot of confidence with newly learnt skills and also the confidence to use certain materials/Hep20/fault finding/radiators etc etc... Anyway, I didn't know you then went on to do your pilot training and for the second time in life I accidentally tripped over your aviation PPL videos which have given me a lot more confidence in my PPL journey. I have just fully watched this video on your skills test experience. Well done! I have my skills test tomorrow. Your explanations are clear, informative, real and friendly. Well done James. Keep up the good work. Liked and Subscribed!
Nice one James! I passed my PPL skills test yesterday too, at Thruxton. Its been great watching your progress and very usefull too! I can seriously relate to your frustrations with examiners and cancelled tests! Makes it feel even sweeter now tho right!! I hope to fly in to Duxford soon! Happy flying mate!
Ahh cool! Give me a shout if you ever fly down.
I start PPl 6 months ago, your Video’s make me so confident
Excellent news! Well done James... I finally passed my PPL on Saturday from Bournemouth too, yeay!! It's been a long haul... thank you for your videos they have kept my worries into perspective seeing you were also going through all the same ups and downs, frustrations along the way, so thank you! Happy flying and if you and your wife are ever flying into Bournemouth let me know and we can grab a coffee!
Will do Karen! Well done on passing.
One of the most useful videos and it didn't try and teach or show anything haha. I'm 25 hrs in and they've still not sat me down and said this, this and this will be in your skills test. It's always just little mentions of things. So yeah, good to hear exactly what it's like and many congratulations. I hope you've spent the last 8 months touring the skies!
Only really started flying again post Covid about a month ago....it's great though!
Well done James. Got mine when lockdown eases up and really feel your emotion. You're so right about the sense of achievement being such a motivator. A good tale well told!
Love this video James. Had my first lesson today with Brian. Great instructor and reminds me of Jeremy. Was in the 150 but had a quick look in IJ and thought of you! Just another 45 + hours to go, feels like a long way away!
Ah cool! Brian is great - his dulcet tones came over the airwaves as I flew around East Anglia last Friday. I’ll be flying again this Friday if you’re around.
@@TimesWithJames haha very true. He’s definitely very calming which makes quite a big difference! Indeed I am, I’ve got a lesson at 12:30 on Friday but I’ll probably get there around 11 to do the mandatory explore of Duxford! May see you around then.
Excellent stuff I’ll be around in PK at some point in the afternoon. See you around!
@@TimesWithJames missed you yesterday James. When I got there you were in the plane already so didn’t want to disturb you. I was doing my walk around on the 150 when you were about to taxi. Weather was bloody awful yesterday and didn’t manage to get up which was annoying. Anyway, maybe catch you soon 👍
@@LHA8925 yeah it was grim. Only got about 20 mins up before cloud and rain scuppered a flight to the coast. Bums!
Excellent James, congratulations! Thanks for the video
Well done James I spent 16 years as a HEMS Paramedic so can fully appreciate the hard work and dedication required 👍
Cheers Gerry! Can’t wait to get up again.
I don't think that anything has riled me up to build on the 9hrs I took before having kids 10yrs ago and finish my PPL, than this video. Really great account of the that 'final hurdle'. Had the pleasure of a lesson at EGSL with Steve Wilkes a few weeks ago - more to come. Thanks for the great content.
Did you get started again David? I am about 6 hours in to my second spell after a 15 year break. I got 12 hours in my logbook first time round. I think I'll be much more appreciative of the efforts I've put in after the long gap. I've just passed my Air Law exam and because my initial 12 hours still count as training hours I should be going solo on my lesson next week
Congratulations James brilliant achievement, been great following your journey. Hopefully QXC next for me subject weather
Good luck dude! You’ll love it. I’m up flying and hopefully filming on Saturday!
@@TimesWithJames nice one weather looks ok on Saturday
Glad to see this video!
I'm about to do my skills test and I'm really terrified. But you have given me a good idea about how it is. Really appreciate! Thanks!
Well done James, great news. Not easy to get a Skills Test done in the Autumn.
Yes. But when the weathers good the air is like silk!
PAssed mine today - used your posts during my journey - thanks
Well done buddy. I have been following your training, I pick up more knowledge from you than some books. You have a good way of explaining things. Future trainer perhaps. You give me a real sense of I can do this, when I hit a bit Im struggling with. Thank you and well done again. I can't wait to tell my story like you have. #inspirational
Wow, and congratulations once again James! I've joined that Facebook page and am already bricking my skills test even though that's a very long way away at the moment... Exercise 14 seems enough of a mountain to climb just now...
Mate you’ll be fine. (I’m just as bad as the rest in that group!)
Brilliant video mate, thanks for sharing your experiences with such honestly. I'm prepping for skills test at the moment and totally bricking it :D
Congratulations James - Jealously rules here as I started to learn to fly but due to my diabetes not allowed to hold a PPL . Hold Tight!!
Awesome...! Well done James...!
Brought back memories you describing this. Thoroughly deserved beer..!!
Thanks Nick. I slept like a log for the next few nights!
Well done James it's just the start of your learning, never stop learning that is key. Congratulations
Exactly!
Congratulations James, well done 👍
Cheers Robert!
Just passed my skills test thanks for your advice on diversions
Great job!
@@TimesWithJames Thanks, making my first flight to Duxford
I qualified on helicopter and I also remember that moment. Its almost like I didn't know what to say or even think. It took a few seconds to 'come back to life'. Well done. Be proud.
Cheers Colin! I am mate!
Very informative and somewhat nerve wracking. I am dreading my skills test!! The log that you have used looks amazing. Any chance you would consider sharing it? Thanks
Great content mate learned alot from it
Hey James… great channel btw - variety… I don’t suppose you could share your plog used for the skills test? Look well thought out and good cockpit management.
That was very interesting to hear. Thanks and big up
Cheers!
Congratulations. I have my skills test tomorrow.
surfinbird84 oh mate I’m rooting for you!
I thought I was pretty ready for my skills test, this video worries me that I am not!
Just how much he made you do is frightening, I thought for a few of those they would pick and chose.
Even though I'm apparently test ready, maybe ill wait until spring next year 😬
I’m the navaid engineer at wattisham watch out for those Apaches mate, ils and glide path
Gongratulations great video .....it seems so Daunting I have this all ahead of me..... I'm hoping to start next year but it seem like a lot stress I think Navigating while flying would be my biggest Problem lack of confidence I suppose
congratulations on passing i had the same feeling when i passed my radio controlled plane test
Well done James.
I was out by roughly the same amount on my nav test and spotted it too. I was on the money for Blandford Forum and I called it but the examiner said are you sure and stared at me causing a minor internal panic. I reviewed the map timings etc and called it again and all was good. Bits of my skills test were a odd. My examiner wasn't happy with the door and I was all ready to go and a bit anxious. Off the examiner popped to get some WD40 and came back. The examiner asked me where I thought it should be sprayed and as I looked up the examiner accidentally sprayed me in the eye with WD40!
Congratulations again, it is a whole bunch of work but so satisfying. If you're ever near Lee on Solent let me know.
Yeah they’re pretty happy. Especially when they know you’re going to use SD from then on anyway!
Great Video...
Thanks!
Well done James, from a fellow aviator.
WELL DONE JAMES!!
You are now in good company with the pilot's licence, Alan Sugar, Nicholas Lyndhurst to name a couple of other great British people with their licence. Once again, well done!!
PS, Did you know that David Jason is a qualified helicopter pilot?!
I didn’t but very cool!
Your planning looks great, any chance you can share your PLOG ? Cheers
Thanks for sharing all these videos James. Do you have a close up or downloadable version of the sheet you designed? Thanks.
Congrats on getting your PPL back in 2019.
Haha , my mum lives in the edge of watisham air field and my sister went to Hadleigh high . Small world !!!!
Hah! Thank god for Hadleigh!
TimesWithJames it’s a bit posh mate they wouldn’t let you in
Congrats!🍾
Awesome, well done!
at 5:19 where do you find the factors doument (e.g. wet grass facts) sheet and is it required for the landing/takeoff distances. i cant find the document any where
Jolly well done old bean!
Cheers Loafer!
Congratulations James! Sounds like you nailed it. You're right, I don't think there are many better places than basking in the history of Duxford for all these amazing firsts.
Exactly! 😎
Great video, thanks!
Thank you very much for this video!!!
Aleks Kosarev no worries Aleks!
@@TimesWithJames just started to do Nav, so your videos are definitely helping to see what's coming ;)
Ahhhh love Nav!
My x brother in law did this 20 years ago I did not Realise what was involved in getting your private pilots license. Well done 👍🏻

TimesWithJames staverton in Glos is close or there is Cotswold airport at Kemble Cirencester. Great cafe there too
Thanks for all of your videos and help getting through the PPL! I passed! The QXC was interesting with an ASI malfunction and Mayday at Gloucester. Here's the video I made: th-cam.com/video/8wlljPyC87I/w-d-xo.html. Hope to see you out there some time!
Flying to Bath today!
What an achievement sir o7
😀
😎
I believe this pilot got Into a lot of trouble with the person he did his radio license with showing most of the exam etc....tutt Tutt..
Haha! No actually.
Steve loves it as he keeps getting new trainees! I see him all the time at Duxford. He still owes me a flight in a Tiger!
Well done but Please stop the constant bragging, it's awful and off putting
You ARE an Angry Biker!
