    Finally... so good to find an actual video with clear beautiful video, and of course of course it only gets 27K views.
    Instead of the videos labelled 4K which have hundreds of thousands of views but despite being labelled 4K and viewable as 4K are basically 360 potato vision.

      I learned a long time ago with TH-cam that quality, not always but often, has little relationship to number of views. For instance, if we were to produce shakey films with burned out highlights, crushed shadows, but with a couple of girls in thong bikinis, we'd probably get a million views. I'm a retired pro with about 50 years of diving experience, and since we don't monetize the channel or need TH-cam to make a living, we can concentrate on, hopefully, high quality films to be enjoyed by people such as yourself, who can tell the difference.
      Here is a link to the 2D version our most recent film, which was filmed last summer. It will be part of a 3D film, we've been commissioned to create for a new 3D theater being planned for Cozumel and hopefully opened later this year.

      I don't think that was. The caves/swim throughs are very popular and can be pretty busy with a lot of dive boats, so I prefer to ignore them. However, I find it far more interesting to swim over them and catch the bubbles working their way through the coral above them.

    • @Tarnway
      @Tarnway  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the film. Great question, regarding the bubbles! What's going on there is that there are tunnel swim throughs beneath the top of the reef and when divers are swimming through them, their bubbles work their way up through the reef and emerge. This is what you are seeing. I purposely like to stay on top of the reef when there are divers below, so I can catch this cool effect.

    @Bary Chall Films Which camera do you normally use to film such great content? Do you also perform post-processing steps?

    • @Tarnway
      @Tarnway  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We always film in native 3D, but produce 2D versions as well. Most of this film was done with a Gopro Dual Hero 3D rig which holds two GoPro 3+ Black cameras genlocked together with a sync cable. The other camera used is a JVC-TD1 dedicated 3D camcorder in a separate housing.
      Very painstaking and time consuming post production is done with the raw clips to achieve the kind of look we want. The Gopros are set in Protune mode with white balance and color set to RAW and flat, which results in very drab and flat looking content. However, this is excellent for color grading in post. The editing software used is Edius, which I like to use for its robust 3D capabilities.

    • @Tarnway0412
      @Tarnway0412 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're hoping to do some more filming in Cozumel next summer. I'll see about doing some wall filming, if possible. As for caves, and swim throughs, I sort of avoid filming them for a couple of reasons. The first is that almost every other Cozumel film does them. The second is that after 49 years of diving, and about 30 years of filming, I just don't find them very interesting. There is very little sealife, and very little color there, and they can often be quite crowded with other divers. I really try to make films which showcase the coral and sealife, and show aspects of the Cozumel underwater environment which are different from what most other people do in their films.
      This year, we were working on a 3D film which we are making for the Museo de la Isla for a new 3D theater they have planned for the coming year. So, we were concentrating on making a film which would be exciting and geared toward an effective 3D presentation.
      Here is a link to a 2D version of it which features some of the scenes which will be used in the 3D film. There is a pretty good wall scene in the opening couple of minutes. See what you tnink.

      Thanks Marty, glad you enjoyed the film! This was filmed over a seven day period at several dive sites off Cozumel. I couldn't begin to remember the names of all of them, but they are sites commonly visited by virtually all of the dive operators in Cozumel on a regular basis. We've been filming there for the past two years and the sea life can be quite different from one year to the next. We plan on shooting another film there this year, as we are also making 3D versions of these films for a new 3D theater in Cozumel which hopefully will be opening by the end of this year or early next.

      This was mostly filmed with a pair of Gopro 3+ Blacks in a 3D housing- since it was filmed in native 3D. This is the 2D version of the 3D film, also on the channel. If you are comfortable with post production editing, and color grading, I would suggest you use a red filter and set the Gopro to Protunes mode with white balance and color set to raw and flat. Don't use auto WB.

      Proper white balance is very important for getting a good result. Since you're obviously interested in learning how to do good underwater video, don't be afraid to learn basic video editing. You'll actually find it enjoyable and there are a lot of pretty good TH-cam tutorials to help you get started. For a decent program which isn't overly complicated for someone wanting to learn, I would suggest Cyberlink Power Director. You can get VERY GOOD results with it and it's not nearly as confusing as the pro NLEs I use. Also, I am a big fan of underwater red filters, as they help you retain good color even a pretty deep depths.

    WB Auto

    • @Tarnway
      @Tarnway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Franco, glad you enjoyed the film!
      I think the settings you use are fine, with the exception of auto WB. I only use the raw setting. By doing that combined with the flat color, you'll have much more color control in post and won't be subject to WB shifts. Also, with that combination, you'll increase your dynamic range. I personally like starting out with very dull flat looking clips and doing all grading in post. Once you get used to this, you'll never go back. The only other major difference in my settings from yours, is that I prefer the medium FOV and will only use wide for wrecks. But, this is just my preference and also has to do with the fact that I'm shooting all the films in native 3D.
      As for stabilization, I mount the Gopro housing on the much larger heavier housing of a 3D camcorder. The extra size and weight helps to stabilize it. I actually designed a stabilizer fin for times when I wanted to use the GP without the larger housing. You can do this by cutting a larger piece of flat plastic and putting a couple of simple handles on it and mounting the GP to the top of it. The extra size and water displacement will help with stabilization. However, you still need to ALWAYS concentrate on swimming very smoothly and doing slow controlled pans, while avoiding any jerky movements. I've been diving for 50 years and filming for 30 of those, and always feel like my skills aren't perfect but continue to improve with each passing year. That being said, I will also give a lot of credit to post stabilization software. I use Mercalli V4 Sal, which can be purchased as a stand alone application or as a pluggin for many NLEs. My NLE is Edius, and Mercalli makes a pluggin for it. Mercalli is absolutely AMAZINGLY GOOD! So, if you start out with pretty stable content, Mercalli V4 Sal will do the rest. I highly recommend it!!
      As for the use of red filters, years ago I used to use lights. I never cared for the contrasty narrow area which the lights work on. Red filter technology is now so good, that in any daytime senerio, I would never consider using lights again. Using red filters at the Protune settings I use allows for total control of the reds and often works out to 20 feet or so in a very wide area. Lights could never achieve anything like that. Plus, I think it looks far more natural than the small contrasty area that lights work on.
      I guess I should add that I also, at times, will use a lot of masks in scenes to allow for fine tuning of the color, brightness, contrast, shadows, etc., in selected areas. Sometimes, I'll use several separate masks in one scene.
      If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
      Best regards,
      Barry Chall

      thank you very much for the precious infos. I will try to put into practice your Gopro setting suggestions plus to add an extra size water displacement to improve Gopro stabilization. About the post editing SW I will contact the Edius Italian seller in order to have infos and cost. I do not think that Mercalli pluggin work fine with Kdenlive.

      Edius comes in two versions, the Pro version and the Workgroup version. The Workgroup version costs more but has some helpful extra features. One that I use all the time is a tab that lets you instantly drop the resolution to different levels for smoother timeline playback. When you have 4K content loaded up with filters and masks, this can be very handy.
      Take a look at our latest film from last fall. At 3:44, there is a scene where the flat profile and A LOT of masking really brought out all the colors and maintained a HUGE dynamic range from dark shadows to bright highlights. I'm still kind of amazed at how well that scene worked out.

      +Silvano Rosso Thanks Silvano, glad you enjoyed it! Since I do all my underwater filming in native 3D and produce both 2D and 3D TH-cam versions, I do most of the filming with a Gopro Dual Hero 3D system mounted on a larger housing containing a 3D JVC-TD1. Most of the filming is done at 1536 pixals of vertical resolution and is upscaled to 2160- 4K- for the 2D version and downscaled to 1080 for the 3D version. 3D is not supported in resolutions above 1080.

    • @Tarnway
      @Tarnway  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of it was done with the Gopro Dual Hero 3D system. About 10% was done with the JVC-TD1. Feed from both systems are added to the timeline using Edius as my NLE. The Gopro Dual housing is mounted to the top of the much larger JVC housing using a standard Gopro adhesive mount. I aim the Gopro to match the JVC which uses a separate LCD viewfinder inside the JVC housing. The JVC has a rather narrow FOV and is very good for relatively close in shots. Unless doing wrecks, I generally set the Gopro on medium FOV at 2.7K resolution and 30fps and always use it in Protune mode with raw/flat white balance and color settings. I prefer to do all the color grading in post. I only use red filters and never use artificial lighting. I used to use it years ago, but much prefer the less contrasty and more natural look I get from red filters.

      A walk through with an emphasis on snorkeling beaches is a great concept. There seems to be very little info available to snorkelers regarding either good beaches or snorkel boat operators. My wife doesn't dive and she's continually frustrated by this. For snorkeling by boat, I think the best place to go would be Columbia Shallows. Of course, you would need to find a boat operator who goes to that spot.

    What camera are you using for this?

      Since this was filmed in native 3D, I used two camera systems: A 3D JVC- TD1, and primarily two genlocked Gopro 3+ Blacks in a dedicated 3D housing. They were in Protune mode with white balance and color set to raw and flat, so that all grading could be done in post. Resolution was set at 2.7K.

      Underwater 3D Channel- Barry Chall Films I think half the time people shooting video have to use a proper filter to inject the reds and oranges that are dissipated as you go deeper. Video is awesome!

      Thanks Mike. I'm a great believer in red filters. I used to use lights about 30 years ago, but never use them anymore. I far prefer the much wider coverage and more natural less contrasty effect I get from red filters.
