very glad that a lotr reference was made
No, matter of fact this makes me want to burn tires
Tell China to get to work on that.
I would like to see you make a video or two on John Hunyadi and his son Matthias Corvinus. Matthias especially has a lot of interesting lore and legend about him such as how he would dress as a commoner to see how people in his kingdom lived their lives and to keep in touch with their needs. I thought about making this request after watching your exelent videos about VladIII.
Fredrick The Great literally has all the trademarks of a real life protagonist (Sad childhood, Dead lover, sworn lifetime rival, rose to greatness)
Exactly! I was always baffled that there wasnt a major show or movie about him lol
He isn't a folk hero type though. He was somewhat typical of aristocrats in his love of arts and was born into power. Power he didn't technically have to struggle much for. His childhood was fairly unpleasant in its own right regardless but so was the common people's. Also obviously LGBTQ main characters would have flopped automatically before the last decade and even now to some degree which puts I final massive nail in the coffin.
Main character arcs
@@macattack5863 no need for him to be a folk hero for a show to succeed though. Stories about the aristocracy (or adjacent) are fairly popular, let me remind you…
Mass murderer, hereditary ruler
“Hats off gentlemen, if he were alive we wouldn’t be here today” ~Napoleon when visiting Fredericks tomb
The only man, that he was afraid
If that's a true quote its pretty goddamn badass
@@Yoyiiii It is. Oxford verified.
@@lonlidood116 that makes it even better!
He said it in front of the current king of Prussia, Weilheim Fredrick III.
Wicked burn
Funfact: Fritz was one of the last (if not the last) European monarch/war chief who was called "the Great". It never caught on with Napoleon (I assume due to how it ended) and afterwards leaders fighting on the battlefront fell pretty much out of favour in general.
Well, aside from Catherine the Great.
Napoleon doesn't need a great, he has a whole era named after him, like Victoria.

Oops, like always, I forgot the Russians. But almost.
Greats are the enlightened monarches, which also advance society not just win battles.
Plz make a series on Maria Theresa. I don’t know much about her, but I know that Frederick the Great (who *hated* her) commented after her death, “That woman has accomplished the achievements of a great man.”
Classic anime rivalry, goes from mortal enimies, to somewhat respect
.
I am Austrian and I can tell you in short: Maria Theresia was an amazing woman and ruler
At first I thought "oh another Walpole sighting." But then I realized "wait, isn't this around the end of the South Sea Bubble? Which means he's prime minister--so he WOULD be the Brit representative!" So we can quite go "WALPOOOOOOOOOOLE!!!"
I miss how every Lies would have a connection to Walpole.
Check the name of the paper at 1:38 ;)
@@augustwolf_2256 God dammit😅
You can never have too much Walpole ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are many great quotes from great men in history, but none compare to the wit, wisdom, and strength of Fredrick the Great, who once famously said:
“Hapsburg‘a back on the menu, boys! Get a piece while it lasts!”
A true pillar of strength.
This episode was a gold mine of memes throughout the whole thing.
Saying menu implies that they had restaurants - which might be true, I'm curious
"Hunde! Wollt ihr ewig leben!?" Thats a better phrase to atribute to him.
One quote I really like is "a crown is just a hat that it rains into"
Try Saladin 😂😂😂 he’s awesome too also Iulius Caesar
"And if all of that sounds complicated -- it is!"
History in a nutshell when you really start delving into it.
Heh, describing the War of the Austrian Succession as one where countries changed sides faster than Loki in the MCU is such a great way to describe it. It's really a fascinating conflict since countries suddenly leaving the war and then re-entering by surprise, often on the other side, really keeps you on your toes and can honestly astonish you when reading about it.
And we thought the Italian Wars were confusing...
Fact is often stranger (and more riveting) than fiction
Fun fact: Maria Theresia's husband Francis I was the Duke of Lorraine. Until this day, their descendants are called Habsurg-Lorraine, to distinguish them from other parts of the Habsburg family.
Man, this period in Europe was like a 50 player game of Diplomacy where every move is war.
7:07
Maria has the face that says 'Me and the bois about to start ANOTHER European war just cause.
5:24 "For when the British pushed-" It was Walpole
He actually was too lol
Frederick the Great: Suffered a lot because of prejudice against LGBT people.
Also Frederick the Great: Absolutely hated the idea of a woman on HRE throne.
People victims of bigotry can be and many times are bigots.
Suffering doesn't happens just to good people.
They aren’t the same thing, you can support LGBT but be against women on the throne

1:34 Damn it. Walpole's gotten to the time machines.
Again?!?
Walpole was a contemporary, as he died in 1745. He doesn’t even need a time machine for shenanigans here.
Of course it was Walpole.
He was around at the time, no time machine needed
Walpole was literally Prime Minister at the time
You've covered real-life RPG characters and real-life Monty Python skits, so I guess it only makes sense that now we have a real-life Hero's Journey.

6:17 In this week's map update: Warmia (Ermland) is still disconnected from the rest of Royal Prussia (the Polish province bisecting Frederick's realm) and *underwater* somehow, apparently. In addition, the border of the lands Austria will take from Poland during the First Partition in 1772 is already marked.
In this week's autism:
Frederick is the probably the best leader of the 18th century, definitely top 3
By leader do you mean as a monarch (In which case I agree) or as a commander? Because if it's the latter then he has serious competition (John Churchill, Prince Eugene, Nader Shah, etc).
Carolus Rex and Nader Shah were probably the best monarchs alongside him of the century, while military, you will have to add Eugene of Savoy, the Duke of Malborough, William Howe, Maurice de Saxe, Alexander Suvorov and obiously Napoleon
he is 6/6/6 with some insane general stats
@@omarbradley6807 caro and nader are generals for the most part, and they must be put on a leash or else their idealisms will take over good decisionmaking
@@omarbradley6807 Charles XII was a good general but it's hard to call him a good monarch when his reign cost Sweden its reputation as a European great power. Also William Howe was mediocre at best, he can't be put in the same category as the other names you've mentioned.
5:24 I see Walpole is still hanging around as per usual
Walpole actually was the Prime Minister when the war of the Austrian succession started, so it makes sense for him to represent the British here.

Me and the boys about to form an alliance against Prussia.
you know it's a good day when Extra Credits uploads. Great video you guys! Keep it up!
Great to see you cover one of the greatest military masterminds of all time.
He's a good general but no mastermind. There were times where the Austrians ran circles around him.
He was pretty cool, but he definitely wasn't a mastermind. He almost lost the Seven Years' War (and his entire kingdom) twice, but managed to pull through due to dumb luck. Russia, which had occupied like, half of Prussia at this point, pulled out of the war due to the empress suddenly dying, and being succeeded by her Prussophile nephew (at least, I think he was her nephew?) the Austrians also occupied Berlin at one point, but didn't capitalise on their momentum due to their defensive style of warfare
Giving Maria's alliance the Spider villains meme faces was a great touch!
3:33 I know it’s supposed to be an LotR orc impression, but I swear to god it sounds like the Orks from 40k

Time to play the Hohenfriedberger Marsch! Made in honor of the Prussian victory during the battle and one that Frederick himself composed!
(though the latter claim is questionable...)
I think the first time I heard the Hohenfriedberger Marsch was playing Empire Total War with Darthmod, pretty good march
I want to take the time to show my appreciation for learning and to compliment you on the pronunciation of Bayreuth.
You even use the slightly rolled R that is common in the area around Bayreuth.
I understand that it's probably a nightmare for English speakers to pronounce. But you tried and you really nailed it.
Thank you so much!
Walpole returns!

The current thing extra history is talking about, in fact I never even heard of the Frederick the great until I saw his videos, so thanks for teaching me about a infamous person that I had never heard of extra history!😊
This would be a perfect time to play the Hohenfreidberger march instead of the normal outro music

Me and the world powers about to go against Prussia
Me and the world powers about to get our nations crippled by a small kingdom in northern germany... 😬
Fredrick and Maria Teresa the ultimate frenemies of history
Bruh they are enemies.
Nice walpole reference on the newspaper
Is this the start of a pattern where Prussia wants to take land from Austria but also needs them as a counter-balance against the other great powers?
The amount of times that Walpole was in this video (even without being directly name dropped) brought me joy!
1:17 "Robert Wall Post..." I see what you did there
7:58 Ah yes, the strategy of defeat in detail. Used it a lot.
"Countries changed sides faster than Loki on MCU".
That one make me laugh so hard, that even my neighbor asked what happened.
Would you all at Extra History ever consider doing a video on Mahmoud of the Ghaznavids? Or on the two houses of the Qarakhanids? I think they'd make pretty exciting series'!
truely a great monarch too
Honestly, I actually would love to see a series on the Hapsburg . They keep coming up over and over and almost every time it’s as this enemy of what seems like half of Europe and unliked the the other half.
Let's put it this way, the Hapsburgs had married into at least half of the Royal lines in Europe, so of course half of Europe liked them
It’s just so complicated. 😭
3:31 "Frederick had rung the dinner bell."
Me: Great analysis of the major Prussian victory at Mollwitz (no sarcasm intended)
Nobody can tell a tale like this chap!
I LOVE his work!
It's why he got the job
Well now, we know what series you need to do eventually. A series about the war you're glossing over here. ;) Seriosuly, though.
We need a thirty years war series
The 'General' who sent Friedrich from the battle field of Mollwitz 1741, then led the Infantry to victory was Prussia's then highest-ranking soldier Generalfeldmarschall Schwerin. He died in the Seven Years War at the Battle of Prag when he tried to rally troops and led them back to battle ("Heran, meine Kinder, heran!" - "With me, my children!")
Learned so much about Prussian history with this video tysm
5:23 & 5:58 I see those surprise Walpoles.
That Robert Walpole is here again!
I'm going to be watching those other three series after I'm done with this one
This episode begins on my birthday strangely enough.

European history is so cool. It seems so grand then the history in the middle east I am used to. There is so much intrigue and constant fighting. It's a miracle any of them survived.
Middle Eastern history is also very cool, from a view of living in Europe
Nah, I just think more was written down in Europe.
@@dominicguye8058 around the world history was recorded by various means, however one of the great filters of history is destruction much like erosion eats away at layers of rock recording the history of the earth itself.
I mean, Middle Eastern history is not short on drama and intrigue. For one thing, it's a much, much longer history. Just this period, the mid-1700s AD, saw Nadir Shah upend the entire Middle East. Egypt in this same time was undergoing a prolonged game of thrones as different factions fought each other for the high positions in the province. It's not that there isn't interesting history there, it's just less well known.
