Great timing, ya rodents can be a issue. A tip to keep them away from your stuff is lavender and/or mint leaves. I combine the 2 in tea bags and suspend them around my shelf close to the floor. Keep the area clean vacuum every weeks and wash the floor. Thanks for upload and have a nice week. Peace
Homemade rodent killer (safe for pets) - jiffy corn muffin mix mixed with baking soda. They eat it & boom! Their stomach acid is like vinegar and the combo w baking soda foams up their inside. The corn muffin mix is to disquise the baking soda in something tasty.
I have put Bay Leaves on every shelf in my pantry for years. I do still put my bags of flour, etc. in the freezer for a week just to be safe! I also put one in the bottom of the trash can and corners of all doors. Cinnamon, underneath small appliances on countertops can deter ants. Stay safe everyone!
Yep. I have to admit that I've gotten into my survival foods. I figured it's best to experiment with them so I have recipes ready when I need to use them. Luckily I bought a lot of #10 cans Augason Farms Cheesy Broccoli soup because it's become a new favorite. I've also discovered Hoosier Hill Farms white cheddar powder makes the absolute BEST mac & cheese!
Lemongrass essential oil also a good deterrent for rodents. It & peppermint essential oils keep spiders, bugs & rodents out of our camper & help keep them out of our 100 year old house. I also put the oils on cotton balls & spread in our storage unit & sheds.
Take heed to what DIY Prepper says here, you never know when or how you will be tested. Spent some time in the military and know what destroys a home and everything in it and because of that I had no plans to watch this post. Then I went to the cellar and was greated by 2" of water and spray from a fitting to the pressure tank. Thankfully most things were protected. So aside from clean up and repairs we only lost 4 boxes of mac & cheese and a container of quick oats. Thank the Father!
I prepared alot of my dried beans, rice and dry milk in mason jars. I put beans in freezer for 2 days. Took them out, dried them for a day and put in jars. Other beans, rice and dry milk I put in mylar bags and stored in popcorn tins..
Great info here. Nothing worse than prepping a lot of food, and find out a year later, that insects or mice ruined it. I use a vacu-suck machine to portion and seal my dry preps. Hopefully, that's sufficient ? As far as vermin are concerned, I have numerous peppermint plants (and cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil) scattered around the house to keep them away. They hate it, and will vamoose pretty quickly. One note... peppermint doesn't repel your in-laws at all !!? 👴🏼 Thx JR. Cheers 😎🦅🇺🇸
@@allengrant There are feral cats in this town and I have two inside. A fly lives for the length of time that two cats can bat it around before getting curious to how it tastes.

When I bring cans & boxed mixes home, I mark the expiration date on the front in large sharpie marker. That helps me rotate & easily spot things that need to be used up soon.
I have my pantry open when the cats are inside, just in case. They're ferocious mousers. I've only ever had one mouse in my house, but you can't be too careful. And everything down low is in mylar with OAs, inside of locking totes or 5 gallon buckets
Keeping the cats in the neighborhood alive might help to deal with mice and rats. At least a gardener, who put meat into his compost pile, described how nothing really helped in the long run, but having two cats on patrol.
@@kimnielsenthewordyvikingett159 They were inside of a boarded up horse trailer in a shaded area. It came through a weak spot in the floor of the trailer. This story was a cautionary tale to those who may be considering a similar storage place.
Living in colder climate means that there is a danger of freezing water damaging the cans. I'm not sure about food with smaller water content, such as spam. May be somebody could tell what happens with it in freezing temperature. In worst case situation you won't have electricity, nor fuel, so you won't have controlled temperature - in which case a root cellar might be the best option.
I accidentally left several cans of food in our camper over the winter in the upper peninsula of Michigan (think 20 degrees below zero). We ate everything the following summer; no noticeable difference with the fruit, mushrooms were tough and rubbery, green beans had no flavor, baked beans were a little mushy, and tuna seemed normal. None of the cans were bulging or looked different except rust had just started to form on the bottom rim of the fruit cans. Bottom line wouldn’t recommend it, but the food was still edible.
Glad I didn't pass on this video because of it's author's youth. Good info here. Can I add one more for a 'special' hiding spot for my preps- termites invaded my shed crawl space! Their unique enzymes allowed them to eat through all my sealed containers. Ruined everything there.
For a can rotator, I found the metal "Auledio" brand one on Amazon that's $20 for a two-pack. Seemed a better deal than the plastic ones, but YMMV. Wish it was even denser.
Another item learned the hard way: buying cases of bottled water. We live in the Chihuahuan Desert on the Mexican border where many days are single-digit humidity. Less than a year after purchasing several shrink wrapped cases of 24-30 (11-12 oz) bottles, I noticed that almost every bottle only had about 6-7 ounces in them. Dried right out. Actually, those bottles are made to degrade rather quickly. So, house plants and dog watering bowls got filled for 'free' for a few weeks, then invested in serious water containment. Friends who live in 'normal' places haven't noticed this problem. Seems to be just the bane of us desert rats.
So does that mean the canned goods I have stored under my bed, are not good to eat. It has been hot here off and on all summer and I don't have air conditioning. I did move most of the canned stuff to the basement, but some did not get moved.
Not sure, it would just depend on how hot it got and how widely the temperature fluctuated. Being under the bed may have protected it a little since it was shaded and had some insulation above it.
Just curious? Can weevils chew through mylar? I have a serious infestation, and was told if i just seal the food in mylar bags, jars, or plastic buckets(with a gasket seal) and oxygen absorbers, it would kill ALL live weevils and their eggs?

Weevils in the flour is no problems. Ask anybody who did a submarine tour in the navy. Add proteins to the flour.
