He turned down a knighthood it would be a disservice to the mans honour and humility to do such a thing. he is one of the greatest kiwi's if not men to grace the earth.

One other thing I remember the crew especially Moody, if he was interested in some historical landmark he would always call the navigator, thinking that the navigator was the crew historian. He didn’t realize it was the bombardier who was the crew historian. I had to get him straightened out. He would ask Lou for the historical significance of Sicily, one of the towns we passed over Sicily before that but I gave him a spiel, whatever it was. I may not have been right. I was always urging to give the answers to the questions before Lou had a chance to think about them. He could probably have answered them too.
not many are aware but a third VC was also mooted though it never made it through the british armed forces HQ .the king was prepared to do so but this had never occurredso referred it to british HQfor further investigation where it was vetoed .I was fortunate enough to meet Capt Upham VC&bar in civvie street .those eyes would have an iceberg reaching for a good stiff whiskey .

I read somewhere that the post-nomials VC superceded all others including orders of knighthood.
