    Sidenote, 7:36, that scene was honestly one of the saddest scenes for me. Hodgins had been there as the closest thing Violet had to a father figure for all that time. He turned around to tell her something but then he realises she's not there anymore, it's like a father watching his child grow up and finally leaving the nest. Violet is no longer the odd soldier girl who could do nothing on her own. C'mon Violet, at least give the guy who took care if you and allowed you to learn what "I love you" means a proper send off.

    Spoilers from the new movie be warned
    You can just tell how much violet wanted to say i love you and how much he meant to her. All she could say was 'I' and 'major', the first words she uttered as a child. Such raw emotions. Someone who was raised as a tool, can cry so genuinely. The major who never cries in front of anyone else, broke down infront of the one he loves.
    (Spoilers as i go deep into their philosophy)
    He felt guilty, he felt undeserving of even touching her, consoling her after what he felt he forced her to go through. He couldn't protect her, he caused her to lose her arms, he couldn't give her a happy childhood she deserves but in the end, he still loves her. He couldn't stand being separated from her even a second longer, not being with her as she goes through life. He was afraid of what might happen to her and can't stand the thought of her suffering on his behalf. All he needed was an answer, he needs to know how she feels no matter, whether its love or not, and then he could die happily knowing she has matured. Thankfully, it was a happy reunion.
    She was saved by him. Brought out of abuse, given a purpose and someone to protect. At first, he thought it was for protection but eventually both reliased it was out of love. She loved him ever since they first hugged, even before he confessed, he was the first light to her ever perpetual darkness. She would do anything to protect him. He is her first and only true romantic relationship she ever develops. No matter who else tried to charm her, she won't allow it because the one she loves has always been around her neck.
    Spoilers. They eventually vowed to be together forever and never leave each other side. They affirmed that they are the only one for one another and sealed the deal with a kiss. Both are disabled. One lost both arms, one lost an arm and an eye. But if you asked them, they would unquestionably say it was all worth it as their impact on one another is and will always be priceless. They would do it again in a heartbeat.
    Since childhood, he has a fear of loneliness. As a high ranking militant, he was sought out for status instead of authenticity. But now he has reunited with the one he loves and the same goes for her. If there is another season, it would dive into their respective insecurities as they have to spend time apart due to their respective jobs. Finally vented. 😞 Thank you for such a well crafted story.
    My heart is still recovering from reading the novel but as the author put in the epilogue, remember no matter what you are going through, violet will be waiting. No matter the place, time or situation. She truly is extremely precious and a masterful piece of creation.

    • @Assassink309
      @Assassink309 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@yu2946 There are actually multiple volumes of the series after the events of the final episode of season 1 and the movie.
      Kyoani changed the ending whereby in episode 13, the person who was suppose to save violet was not the brother but the major himself(and then the dialogue of this movie is inside). That is in Volume 2 chapter 13. So there are around 11 more volumes and a couple side stories.
      There is then volume 3 and 4 ever after. In it, it goes in-depth where they are reunited but have to spend time apart due to their respective jobs. Gilbert wanted to get promoted as fast as possible to veto any orders that might put violet in danger. Violet is still a amanuensis.

"I had a phase of liking you...then i fell in love with you...and now it turns out i love you most...do you understand?"
      From violet volume 4 chapter 5 "Regardless Major, its so difficult to let go of your hand. Even if everything else was stolen away from me. You're all that i want. I want you. I want only you. Im so fond of you. All this time...all this time...only you..truly all along. Ever since the first time you embraced me... it has always been like this. I am in love with you. Even though you said it to me earnestly countless times...i was afraid of saying it as i fear it might be shot down.
      I am in love with you...i long for you. It overflows nonstop. Since long ago, way before you told me that you loved me, i have been in love with you. I did not understand any sort of emotion but.... read the rest yourself. 😉 (Something alone the lines of being a monster,constantly abused however he wasn't scared yet even taught her basic skills and given her another life, most importantly taught her the concept of love)
      These are just the tips of the iceberg. It is unimaginable that anyone else would be suitable for either of them. Letting anything else get in-between them would be uncalled for. Plus she's 18 going 19. If that's not truth love... i don't know what is.
      If you want more info...Read volume 4 chapter 4 and 5. I've seen many of the same opinion as you change their mind immediately after reading them.

    I feel like Violet deserved better, and you see this in the novels, a true happy end, and a more caring Gilbert who never truly ran away from from Violet, let alone tell her to heck off to her face. I highly recommend reading the novel translations as they've finally finished the last chapter, and... that gave me the ending that I needed even more after seeing this movie. Technology didn't make letters fully obsolete in our IRL, and that progression almost kills a lot of what was conveyed in the anime and what inspired me and my gf to start sending love letters in our LDR. Violet gets the ending you wanted to see in the movie in the novels with much better progression, buildup, and relationship development. And Gilbert being more of the man she deserves.
    Would love to see your take on the novels.

    I personally don't know how I feel about Violet leaving behind the life she had built for herself without the major just to go back to him. The entire show was about Violet learning to live on her own and learning to feel and understand emotion. It felt like by the end of the show Violet had finally let go of the major. Her line "I don't need any orders" to Gilberts brother solidified for me at least that she didn't need the major to live anymore, that she had found purpose in her own life besides following the majors orders. I kinda feel like the fact that in this movie she was so hung up on the major didn't really make much sense. I personally would have preffered if Violet didn't abandon her life and just went back to the major. I honestly think the shows conclusion topped this movie. My main problem with Violet was always her obssesion with the major, but that just made the ending of the show all the better. I liked the role of the major as a driving force for Violet to discover her emotions. Maybe I'm just salty that Violet just left Hodgins, the man who'd done everything he could to take care of and support her for all those years, without a single thanks or even goodbye, for the man who'd left her and went off to some island.

    • @simonkatz3779
      @simonkatz3779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      I actually sort of agree with your point. In my opinion, I think the major should have actually died in that stair case. I think him being dead was much more powerful to Violet's development as a character than his returning. In fact it really does feel like the story threw away so much of her personal growth just to get her back together with Gilbert. Her getting back together with him feels kind of cliché too. Also I think the nature of their love for one another goes from being arguably *okay* to down right creepy by the end of the story. Like, when Gilbert says it to her in the stairwell it's kind of unclear what kind of love he's talking about but the tone strongly points to something akin to familial/brotherly/fatherly love, not romantic love. But when he's saying it to her in the ocean at the end of the film, it feels like the tone is suggesting it to be romantic love. Which if that is the case; that's really creepy. Like that's some serious grooming shit that I just cannot get on board with. Idk, I really don't think they should have brought Gilbert back. Story was better with him dead, if you ask me.

    • @seven_8434
      @seven_8434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      @@simonkatz3779 I didn't want to say it but I'm glad someone else agrees with me.
      The major being dead was the reason the show happened. It's the very reason why Violet was able to learn everything she did and the reason she was finally able to let go of her need to have someone else give her orders. Him being alive and better yet, Violet abandoning everything she had aquired really put me off.
      By the end of the series I understood what the moral was, but by the end of this movie I was confused as to what exactly the show was trying to convey. Don't let go of your past, don't move on with your life after a loved ones death, return to your previous life as though nothing happened and live happily ever after with the man who abandoned you for years while leaving all the friends and commitments you've made in your new life.
      Personally, I think this ending is the very essence of my main issue with the show which is the fact that while Violet is a wonderful character she always ended up feeling uninteresting because of obsession with the major. All the people she meets and lessons she learn are very interesting and compelling. Like when she realizes what Hodgins meant by "you're burning" or when she cries after the little girls mother dies. She goes from a person who knows nothing but orders to one that can understand her own and others emotions. But some of those scenes feel like they're ruined by the major. Like that scene where she realizes what "you're burning" means. In the very next scene she finds out that the major is dead and she competely breaks down. The thing she just learned is overshadowed by this guy that the viewer doesn't even care about yet. Also, the fact that she breaks also annoyed me a bit. I personally think that is justified because of course anyone would be incredibly sad if they find out a person they love is dead but the fact that she ran away and even tried to kill herself rubbed me the wrong way. I think the rest of the show justifies it but at the time I was annoyed at the fact that even though she'd lived this new life for a while and even though she had found meaning in her own life she would throw it all away. All those complaints are made up for and more in the final episode and especially that line "I don't need any orders" which perfectly closed off a a beutiful character arc. But now in this movie the very same issue arises and even worse, it ends with the issue not only persisting but being made the conclusion of the story.
      The conclusion for me is usually what sets the general message of the show. It finsishes the character arcs and leaves the characters where the author think they should be. The end of a character arc is the end of a journey where usually a character has gone from having a flaw of some kind to having fixed that flaw. This is the opposite of that. Violet went through her character development in the show and then essentially undid it all in the span of a single movie. She went through an anti-character arc. I'm having a hard time understanding what the writer was thinking.

      I have a similar thought, don't get me wrong, i love the movie. But it's still pretty weird to see her coming back to Major after all she's been through. I think she can say goodbye to the Major and let him live the life he chose for himself. Both Violet and Major had build a beautiful life of their own. Major can finally choose his own life without any shackle from his family, and Violet can live independently with her friends and Hodgins (which i already consider a prominent father figure to her) and let go of her dark past.

    • @hoang7850
      @hoang7850 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Hello, just want to say that the movie specifically said that she finished all the request for her then leave, there are no such thing as leaving Hodgin without a thank or anything.
      Secondly, Violet didn’t threw her life out of the window. In the last few scenes, the island was said to have the highest number of mails for ever citizen then anywhere, which is one of the reason why they got their commemorate stamp. That shown that aside from managing the island post office, Violet still keep on doing her work as a doll. I hope this help.

    • @seven_8434
      @seven_8434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@hoang7850 ok, yes, that is true, I'm sure she said goodbye but we never got to see that. I personally didn't like the fact that she left Leiden and all the friends she had gotten there without a second thought.
      I couldn't put my finger on it but to me it didn't really make sense character wise but I think I've figured out why it felt off.
      To me this finale and the end of Violets character arc did two things which seem a bit conflicting but make sense in retrospect.
      The first thing that happened was at the end of the series when Violet was finally able to live as her own person without needing to be a tool. This was the obvious conclusion to her character arc and the ending that the series was building up to from the start.
      The second thing is the thing that feels conflicting to me. Violet learning what "I love you" means is connected to her learning to understand emotions but it was also the reason she realized that she was in love with the major, which is what the movie was about.
      The reason the movie felt off was because Violets love for the major feels too close to her need to get orders from him. When Violet was still obsessed with the major in the movie it felt like she hadn't grown at all. It felt like she was back to how she was at the start of the series when she could only think about the major and wasn't able to live independantly. That isn't true however. Violet had let go off Gilbert as her military leader but had come to realize that she's in love with him. Violets character arc has taken her to a place that looks very similiar to where she started. It feels contradictary becaus the two results of her character arc were that she was able to let go off the major but also fell in love with him.
      This thing is even brought up by Gilbert himself. He doesn't want to be with Violet because he doesn't want her to be unable to live her own life. But he then goes to Violet despite being scared that she wouldn't be able to live as her own person if she is together with him.
      The scene in the water was a bit weird though. Violet calls Gilbert major and Gilbert tells her that he's no longer her superior officer. That sort of implies that Violet still views Gilbert the same way as she used to even though we know that isn't true. I think that ending scene could have been a bit more conclusive. It would have been nice to see Gilbert realizing that Violet really had grown as a person. I didn't really feel like that was properly conveyed.
      The thing with her leaving Leiden and all the friends she had gained was annoying because it felt like Violet and the writters just left them without a second thought. I would have been super happy if we at least got a scene where Violet thanked Hodgins and gave a proper farewell. Instead we just got a sad ass scene of him crying because the person he essentially viewed as his own child had left. I'm probably just salty because I really like Hodgins but whatever.
      ... I don't know if any of that made any sense but that's how I feel... I think...

    I finished the show a few days ago and I’ve never seen and felt so much emotion put into an anime show like this before. Not even in media as a whole. It was so emotional and I have a very touching message. The first show that I’ve seen from Kyoto animation was A silent voice, which I absolutely loved. This showed me the importance of why we do letters and that it’s tough to express your feelings. This show felt like it had a soul, which it did and I loved it. Episode 10 is honestly my favorite, not just from the show but as a whole. Definitely is a bold statement there but I don’t care it’s true. I am currently watching K-ON and so far I am enjoying it. Not quite my thing honestly. I’m not super into school like stories but because I love Kyoto’s work, I’m going to try and check out all of it.
    I wonder how silly it sound for a Fantasy show to have a big affect on my life

    "This might be the last times I'll ever make a video about Violet Evergarden"
    Is probably one of the lines I knew I wouldn't like to hear, but all good things must come to an end.
    Violet Evergarden, the show doesn't have some big ol' plot twist or shounen levels of anime fights is the first anime in my 20 years of watching anime to ever give me a feeling no other anime could ever come close. I was devastated to learn what happened to some of the staff members during production of the film over two years ago. To them, this movie was their last letter to the audience who genuinely enjoy the series and I remember watching it 6 times in the theaters back in April, most of the time after I got off work.
    Even after watching multiple times, it never lost its magic because every scene felt there were tons of love and passion from the staff poured into it.
    Yiman, I've watched every video you did on Violet Evergarden. I'm glad that it has finally reached its end and content on knowing a certain someone finally understands what the words "I love you" mean.

    In the light novel, dietfried finds violet on the island and so many blueberries on that island, after he finds violets, he gives violets to gilbert. Now,On the movie ... Dietfried found gilbert on the island and so many blueberries there, it's like how dietfried found violets before
    The reason why Violet can't say love for Gilbert can be seen in the light novel. in the novel, violet actually still doesn't fully understand love, that's why gilbert hugs violet, gilbert doesn't want violet to force herself and now gilbert understand violet's feelings, Violet just need gilbert on her side to understand the meaning of love together

    One day I was bored and checked Netflix for something to watch. I never really knew what anime was and had only heard of bleach DBZ and naruto through friends. After scrolling through some of my for you options I was bored so I checked something called Japanese animation. In all honesty the movie caught my eye, I saw the animation and the thumbnail was cool. I began watching the final installment not even knowing that there were previous installments. Somehow even without the previous episodes or the movie the movie touched my heart... it shattered it. I looked for reviews and saw that there was more.... more episodes. I watched the whole thing and that's how I got into anime. I understand some would think that I have no right to watch something like this but... I would like to say thankyou to the Kyoto animation studio thankyou for the beautiful art and may you rest in peace. May your memory live on in the art that you've given us.

The way that emotions are captured in the scenes, silence, and words throughout it really help me re-center my values and leave me with a strong sense of clarity and self unlike most anything I've experienced. It's a truly beautiful experience, one that I will carry for the rest of my life, and I hope to provide that same experience to somebody else somehow as well!
    So hey, you, yeah you person reading this, how are you? I hope you're well, but if you aren't; sometimes pain and suffering are as important as joy and happiness in life, and that suffering is what will complete and fulfil it. Take time to grieve, to rest, to take a deep breath and just process things, take as much time as you need, and when you're ready, you got this, take a step towards something you care about, towards a goal you've been working on, towards simply living because sometimes simply living is enough, and in the future looking back, hopefully you'll see the pain you experience allowed you to grow, to understand, and to step into life with a new, deeper perspective, so that you may fully become who you are, so that you may become entirely a person worthy of that name.

    Literally just the first few mintues of the movie were so emotional. When I figured out that the grandmother they were talking about was Anne, I was so touched that I paused the movie and went back and rewatched the ending to episode 10 (Where, just like always, I cried like a bitch) before continuing the movie.
    I genuinely didn’t know whether to be sad that she died or happy that she was able to live such a long and fullfilling life.
    Episode 10 of Violet Evergarden is probably one of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I’ve ever seen (Easily on the same level as Your Name and A Silent Voice) and I absolutely love how KyoAni understood just how much that particular episode resonated with the fans and, because of that, they referenced the episode in this movie a lot, such as the dying boy’s letters and Anne’s daughter and granddaughter.
    Violet Evergarden is a very important series for me, because, before I watched it, I’d never cried from any form of fictional material. I’m not kidding. Before that, I had not cried for years when watching or reading fiction. I’m not even sure I had ever cried from watching fiction in my ENTIRE LIFE before that point. And I’d watched some REALLY heartbreaking stuff before Violet Evergarden. Things like the Walking Dead game’s ending, the Requiem For A Dream ending, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, Schindler’s List. I have watched it all and none of them got me cry.
    But every time, literally every time that I watch Episode 10 of Violet Evergarden and hear the mother say ’Anne’ after she’s passed away, I always start crying.
    The fact that this series got me to cry to fictional material shows again just how amazing this series is.

    I have to say that I can't agree with your opinion here. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Violet Evergarden and I believe it to be one of the best stories I have seen in my short life... But at the same time I think this movie was one of the worst possible decisions to end the series.
    But before I start ranting, I will point out some good things because of course the film isn't all bad. The major's brother coming around and trying to atone for his past mistakes concerning both Gilbert and Violet is pretty touching, and I like the detail that Hodgins can't just forgive him that's the best part of the movie for me. The film starting in the future and relating to us the impact Violet left behind her was also a nice way to show us that despite what she went through, she managed to live on and make the world a better place. And of course the scene of her reuniting with Gilbert was touching... And that's where the issues start.
    I get that the idea of wanting Violet to reunite with Gilbert after she's grown up, to show him that she indeed succeeded to live a true life, but the whole point of the anime's ending was that she had to move on, it was a bittersweet ending but the one Violet was always going to come to. Forever cherish the memory of Gilbert for the chance he had given her, and use that chance to pave her path forward. You can't just undo that to give the happy ending with him, which is what the movie did, undermining the anime's finale by regressing Violet's character, all for the sake of an emotional payoff.
    Emotional payoff that was also drawn out for as long as possible because Gilbert for some reason went on a mental breakdown. I get that he felt guilty, he already did in the anime, but that didn't stop him from trying his hardest to raise Violet, I find it weird that he would lash out so bad after everything he has done for her.
    Gilbert being alive in the first place is also a deus ex machina of the worst kind. I'm not gonna comment that she should have died from blood loss alone, hell Violet lost both her arms and could still be rescued... But it's far fetched to say the explosion Gilbert suffered didn't just finish him off, and even more far fetched that someone rescued him before the army could come yet they didn't find Violet? Nor any other injured soldier? That's honestly just lazy writing to resurrect a character that for all accounts, was dead.
    Also can we remember something real quick? That Violet was a child when Gilbert took her in? The anime was ambiguous regarding the type of love between the two, but as far as I'm concerned, it was pseudo-parental love, Gilbert wanted her child to live a better life than what he had given her. And it's creepy as all hell that these 2 would end up marrying. If we really had to have them reunite, I would have found it way more powerful if she had settled down with someone else, like the astrology boy, before the reunion, because it would have been a heartfelt moment still, but we would have preserved that character growth for Violet, her having a family of her own is proof that Gilbert's efforts weren't in vain How powerful would that scene have been if Violet had been able to tell Gilbert everything she accomplished thanks to him, thanks to that simple "I love you" all those years ago?
    And to make matters worse, the B plot is also mediocre. It's sad yes, but if you think about it, what did Violet learn from Yuris? At best it was a reminder that she couldn't hang on to her obsession about Gilbert forever, and that's kinda it. Compare that to every encounter she made in the anime. Every single one of them served as a stepping stone for her to start understanding emotions, feel them, and then use that new found understanding to pass it on to other people in need. She already has all that when she meets Yuris. In fact, the prior film about Amy and Taylor already explored that idea of Violet being able to pass on her own learnings to make others' lives better.
    What I'm trying to say, is that this entire story line about Yuris, is pretty pointless in the end, and that's a good half of the movie !
    So yeah, I wasn't pleased with that final send off to Violet Evergarden. It was a manipulative story about giving fans the happy ending they wanted for Violet, despite all the problems it would bring because of how the story had unfolded.
    If you want a piece of advice from a random person on the internet. Never just give in to emotions, always think about why these emotions are, what they mean and how they came to be. That's what makes stories great, emotions that naturally originate from them, and couldn't have been any other way.
    That is why I believe this film isn't good, and why the anime was wonderful.

    The reunion definitely made me cry... but the yuris's scene, when he's on the phone and the letters for his parents and his lil brother, broke me real hard...

    I love how wonderfully crafted, the narration was from the future, past, and present to show Violet storyline. It has such brilliant writing. Movie had me tearing up , and sobbing. Such a soulful movie. When Gilbert is hugging her, and the letter slips up into the air, and then it goes back to the start when Violet was first emotionless, close up writing a report to Gilbert. To then panning back to them in the present, and showing her growth and now the ability to show her emotions. What beautiful character development and conclusion to them :')

    "Should you ever feel lonely, by all means, I would like you to call her name. The name of this girl, whom you have seen through until this point...Violet Evergarden". Being 19 years old (when this anime released I was only 14 - 15) and back then, I have no single clue about anime at all. All I remember is seeing my sister who was in university watching it and catching snip bit of it. But now having soaked up knowledge from modern 2023 animes like AOT, Demon Slayer and Oshi No Ko, I'm happy that I looked back on this anime and felt sadness from beginning to the end for the first time. I'm happy to see Violet's journey from beginning to the end and being not through the screen, but actually by her side. Thank you for opening a new door for me...Violet...Evergarden
    And thank you Kyoani for dropping this legend of an anime. And for you guys out there like me albeit young or old, let us not forget this anime...ever again

    I knew Violet Evergarden will be a series I will like just from the bio from MAL, but I never imagined that it will be one of my favorite series ever, having so much heart in it that no one could resist crying. This movie shows us how fast times goes and that no one is eternal, not even our girl with mechanical arms. Farewell, Violet Evergarden, you've found and lived your life with the man you always loved and missed.

    The most beautiful anime series I have ever watched. So inspiring, moving and inspirational. The animators hard work will be appreciated for eternity. The last movie was all the closure that I needed. Will definitely re watch all of this anime series.
    Also loved learning every characters backstory and it really made me emphasize so much for these characters. My heart exploded watching this and the last movie was everything I could have asked for an exceeded my expectations, Thank you to all the animators for creating a masterpiece ❤️

    one of the hardest hitter was Anne: she died so alone and the picture of her granddaughter (where Anne as grandmother laughed in the wheelchair and the granddaughter looked so absent minded) showed that at the end of her live she neither had a close relationship with her daughter or granddaughter, this is so horrible and casually mentioned in the movie and not enough people talk about it...

    Now that I just finished the movie just now, I'm still tearing up at how beautiful everything is about the masterpiece that is Violet Evergarden. Rest in piece to the souls who were lost during the fire, I hope they all know that their work has touched all of us deep within our hearts.

    Quick question: thoughts on Hyouka? It's one of KyoAni's best, and it has THE best shot composition I've seen in all of anime. Sadly, the director is not here with us anymore, but his work is something that touched me and Hyouka was one if the first that made me see what animation can truly be.

    nothing beats violet evergarden for me.. even if I watch so many anime it just doesn't make me feel the same way as when I watch violet evergarden.. the music, animation, story and even just violet herself makes me super emotional.. I know it has a very low chance but I'm still hoping for season 2 sigh.

      This anime truly left it's mark for the futute generation for sure. I looked past upon it ever since the anime released (2018) and tbh...kinda regretted it. But upon finishing it in 2023, I could say this anime tops the line of more newer lines of anime, heck even beating some of them.

    Just finished the movie today and my man... I think this one I will never recover, this is a suck a good anime that bring us many messages, not only for their character development, specially violet development that was the most important thing in the series, mas but the fact to never lose the hope and always continue with our life even if it hurts, one message that I could take from the whole series and movies is that, value the people who love you, who give you true love, pass time with them, because love is the most important thing in this life, so don't pass your time alone, pass that time you have with your family or even partner, they will always be there for you and will always support you, so the same way the make you loved, love them too and create memories with them, live a life you will never regret yourself, and just like Gilbert and Violet would do that same thing over and over again, thank you for reading this till the end

  • @Dear_Everything

    The Movie is like a final letter. From the show being the type of letter which is mentally engrained in the back of your head, Violet Evergarden, like anyone, is that show that makes you remember it like a person. From What ifs, to How are you, you keep reading the letter hoping the person is or what could’ve been. Whether you love to hate it or hate to love it, this movie is like a final letter that leaves your questions, wishes, worries answered. Once you read it, even if it’s written by the same person, this letter is special, because like that person, once you let all these feelings go, you’ll say, “They’re doing alright, and that’s alright with me.” As much as I hate when animes like this end, it makes me happy knowing it’s completed.

    I could kinda of tell where the movie was going from a mile away. But boy that did not stop the movie from breaking me. One scene that unexpectedly made me tear up was Hodgins yelling at Gilbert through the door. "You sir, are a monumental idiot for making Violet cry like that. She just learned how to feel and you're gonna break her heart already?" I'm pretty sure that's not what Hodgins said but you know... That's how it felt. The voice acting at that scene was just... Wow. Coupled with the astonishing animation and emotional score. Perfect.
    Also, not only was Gilbert running from his problems. It was like he was intentionally trying to feel his sins crush him. He was living in a town where all the men got drafted to fight against his country and no one returned. He stayed in that town. Where he has an unlimited source of guilt-trip watching all the families left behind by the men that his people killed.
