    Love the display thing for your ATC's! How do you make that?

    • @GiseleGrenier
      @GiseleGrenier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I made it with folded cardstock and Arc discs from staples. If you are subscribed to my emailed list, you'll see a blog post with a step by step on how to make it in a few weeks. Super inexpensive and totally customizable to hold ATC's, bookmarks, postcards, tags.. anything like that.

    Thank you so much for this video on how to start ATCs, Gisele. I do have a lot of stuff already in because I have recently started to learn to Art journal. You have helped me understand ATCs a lot better. Can I ask, there were a couple of your ATCs you mentioned, and briefly showed, that have a 'glass-like' covering on them. They we chunky and reminded me of glossy accents but on a bigger scale. Can you tell me what that stuff is please? Thank you so much. xxx

      Hi Dorothy, thank you for the lovely comment. I've created the glass look using DecoArt Media Crackle glaze, DecoArt Triple Thick (liquid or spray) and DecoArt Media Liquid Glass. I hope this helps?

    Great to use old playing cards that are well used. Probably would not have to sand.

    • @GiseleGrenier
      @GiseleGrenier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old playing cards, no, you probably wouldn't need to sand them. A coat of clear gesso or matte medium will also help things "stick".

    Great video thanks! This was really helpful for a beginner like me just getting into all this for the first time. But most of all I LOVED that you recommended using recycled stuff (that everyone has lying around the house!) to repurpose and use rather than buying expensive stuff from the shop all the time. I keep loads of recycled stuff close at hand to use for different kinds of crafts too, it's really handy. Glad it will be useful for this too as I really hope to get into making these cards. I've remade so much stuff from recycled junk, it's so satisfying and fun, as well as good for the environment. So I have some questions: I get that jesso (spelling?) is like a primer so that things 'stick' better to the card but what alternatives are there? Is it like modge podge? As I don't think we get jesso here in the UK although I might be wrong? Can you make it yourself at home if there's no craft shops nearby and prefer to recycle/reuse stuff? I know you mentioned you can use any size card but what size do the cards normally have to be like the standard, most common size? Is there a way to prevent the card and paper going soggy after awhile? How do you protect the surface (sorry if you mentioned any of this already I didn't realise). Love you videos, so inspiring, and love the ideas! Thank you (have liked and subscribed) keep up the great work!

    Hi Giselle. Great video. I have only made a few ATC's as part of a group challenge. It looks like we are going to make it a monthly challenge and will be given partners to swap with. A question I have is, when you are using packaging (eg: cereal box) and prepping the printed side with Gesso, do you need to sand it first for the Gesso to stick or can you just go ahead and put it straight on?

    • @GiseleGrenier
      @GiseleGrenier  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gail, it would depend on what type of finish is on the packaging. I have found that ones that are more matte, I can paint straight away, keeping in mind that the packaging colour will usually show through the paint. If that's the case, just add a layer of white paint. Now, if the packaging is shinier, err on the side of caution and gesso it with a bit of sanding first. Nothing major, just enough to remove the shine and create some tooth. You can do this with a clean kitchen plastic scrubby pad too. I hope this helps?
      PSA: when sanding, never blow dust away as it gets into the air and it's inhaled. Use a wet wipe or kitchen wipe to pickup, vacuum or gently brush into a wastebasket. Wearing a dust mask rated P95 if you are going to do any mass sanding or in a non-well ventilated room.

    • @GiseleGrenier
      @GiseleGrenier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lisa, Gesso yes is a primer. Modge Podge is a glue and/or a medium for decou-page. there are DIY recipies for Gesso on TH-cam and for your own use, sure, you can experiment. If you are creating art for gifts or to sell, I personally don't recommend diy mediums because the long term results are unpredictable. That's just me. In a pinch, you can use a matte finish style of acrylic paint. If you use a glossy acrylic paint, nothing will stick to it.
      Artist Trading Cards are ALWAYS 2.5" x 3.5". Not sure what you mean about the paper going soggy after a while. Do you mean after the art is created? or during the creation process? if you mean after, you can varnish the card. If it's during the creation process, the gesso stops the card from absorbing everything.
      I'm not sure if this helps?

      Ahhh yeah this has been really helpful thank you! So glad I now know what gesso is lol. I'll look out for it in the shops next time now I know what it is and what to look for. I've got every thing else but no gesso for the craft table so must get some for the collection. Hmm maybe you CAN actually buy it in the shop here in the UK too, I've prob just never seen or noticed it before but now I'll know to look out for it! Ahh yeah you're right! I usually do decoupage (hah that's why I was getting mixed up between gesso and modge podge lol!) and yeah I was referring to the cardboard getting soggy thanks (but now I know that's what the gesso is for!) I see! Okay got it! I've already started cutting some cards out to size so I can try this. Ooo this will be fun and relaxing! Thanks for all your help it's much appreciated :-)

      you can get them at Michaels and the Dollar Store.. here in Ontario, Canada, I picked mine up at Dollar Rama. They are a bit larger which holds the thicker ATC's much better.

      Hi Teresa, they are primarily for trading with other artists. I'm currently hosting a monthly swap with a small group of ladies if you'd like to get more information (no obligation to participate). You can visit ArtPlace.ca and there is a link in the menu for the ATC swap.

    can gesso be used for water color painting? or acrylic/watercolor?

    • @GiseleGrenier
      @GiseleGrenier  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gesso can be used to prime paper/canvas for acrylics, and I've also used gesso as a substitute for white paint. For watercolours, the pigment would sit on top of the gesso layer and not be absorbed into the paper. If you already have gesso, why not take two little card sized pieces, do the same technique and on one card use acrylics and on the other card use watercolours...so you can "see" what it looks like and if you like it.

    • @Adzuma
      @Adzuma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      good idea! thanx! i didn't even think of ATCs in that way. kinda of a catalog of techniques and ideas. I am already trying to come up with ways to use them with my embroidery and lace making, too!

      yes, poker sized cards are 2.5" x 3.5". You'd likely need to sand them a bit so stuff sticks to it. It's a great idea because if you don't have any thick substrates, you can get playing cards at the $ store.
