Mike, Jerry’s brother cut off his finger with an axe in an accident when he was a kid and Jerry actually joined the military at one point but got kicked out in the very early 60s.

Also, open carry laws exist. Also, the legal system did its job, by definition, and he was found not guilty of the charges, he was not found "totally innocent of everything". Everyone cries for justice until the justice system doesn't result in their desired outcome.
