So true about condition, I've said the same thing about classic vehicles for many years. Whether you are looking for unrestored original condition or correctly restored to manufacturer specs. Story chain of ownership and other related documents can also make a difference.

Thats where rarity plays into the equation. If its a gun that is highly available, then the functional condition is somewhat important to the price. If its a gun that is very rare, to almost unavailable, then its condition matters even more in most cases. Worth a fortune as a paper weight, worth 10 times that if its functional.

Had a similar experience... A guy at the local gun show, who always has a huge table, was selling an M1 Garand...
I glanced at it and the $1,200 price tag that said "original WW2 rifle"...
Well, it was a 5.84 million serial number (same as my service grade CMP Garand manufactured in 1955), and was even DISPLAYED WITH A CMP CERTIFICATE.
I hate to be "that guy", but I humored the fella, who caught me Checking it out...
He said "nice rifle isn't it???"
I gave him my best "oh boy-howdy" voice...
"Yeah, its a nice one for sure... 5.84 million serial I see"
"It sure is... genuine, all-original WW2 Garand!!! Even has the ww2 inspection stamps!"
We himmed and hawed a bit, til I finally said "well, it sure is nice, but I own a 5.84 million serial just like this one... got it from the CMP for $650... it also has the same post-ww2 Nato-era Cartouche, Proof Stamp, and replacement H&R bolt as yours... good news is that your 1955 barrel is correct to the rifle's serial..."
The guy acted "shocked" and said "wow... you know a whole lot more about them than I do..."
He then bid me good day, placed the CMP certificate and "$1,200 Original WW2 M1 Garand" tags back on the rifle, then set it back on the stand...
It pays dividends to KNOW what you are looking at...

I was recently searching for my middle son's 1st .22. I searched and looked at a lot of new guns but I ended up attending a gun show. I found an 40+ year old training rifle for about the same as a new bolt action ruger. The thing I loved about it is that it is an old gun like the one I gave to my oldest son that was my Dad's. It gives him an old gun to give to his son like I had to give my 1st born. We shot it the day I bought it and it shoots great it got him researching and learning and these old guns are educational beyond just learning to shoot. I suggest when you get your kids into guns start them with an old gun rather than a new one.

Same at the gun shows here in southern california. another gripe i have(recognizing that our politicians are bat-shit crazy gun-grabbers) is the new law that the crooked communist politicians have passed that requires background checks on ammo that must be purchased through an FFL. I have been buying ammo online for years at screaming deals not available anywhere else and sent straight to my front door. Starting Jan. 1st of 2018, buying ammo will be a huge and expensive pain in the ass and I can't even begin to say how fking pissed off I am about all of these infringements on our second amendment, as well as the insanely high taxes (new gas tax starts tomorrow Nov. 1st goes up 12 cents to start the new law) and catering laws to mental illnesses (trans bathroom laws and laws allowing "gender neutral" on driver's licenses, birth certificates etc.) and the plethora of other morally bankrupt laws and regulations that are flat-out wrong in the eyes of any decent human being who was raised with morals and values. Sorry for my rant, I needed to vent. The distinction between right and wrong in modern politics is so blatantly obvious that it blows my mind to see people who gobble up the bullshit propaganda from the MSM. They are followers, not leaders.

Gun shows are like that, most guns are priced fair to high. The fun is finding that gem that everyone is overlooking and is priced low. I have found a lot of great deals at gun shows but you have do do some research and keep your options open and realize you won't always find a deal.

I bought an Enfield Sporter ($135) First I checked the Headspace & even though it needed repair, I found a collection of "NEW" Heads & bought one of each as I didn't know which one I might need when I took it to the gunsmith. I have the Original #1 & a #3 (new) if anyone needs them. I also bought a 1944 Mosin Nagant & after cleaning/inspecting it, I took it out to our range. We have Steel life-size cut-outs of various game animals out to 900 yards going up the side of the mountain. I'm by far not a marksman but, using the original sights I was able to hit the bear at 800 yards. (maybe the head, maybe the tail)? Cost $99 at an auction. While it had quality wood stock, I did swap it out for an Archangel Stock & a Timney Trigger. It's a damn sweet firearm for Mountain Goat / Bighorn Sheep hunting !

I snagged an original 1885 Winchester Low Wall recently in .32-20, all original in about 70-80% and the gun was made in 1889. The gun is in amazing shape, but the shop owner knows his clients and charged a fair price because not everyone is beating down the door looking for one. I got it for a fair price and can't complain. Another gun shop I go to has prices that are designed for people who just fell off the turnip truck.

Condition is pretty key. I just bought a no.4 mk1* and it was never shot by the previous owner who owned it since the 70’s (family so I doubt he lied) . I took it out to 200 yards and hit a couple inches from bullseye. Never shot an open sight other than a pistol before hand!

Totally agree with this. I was recently in the market for a savage 99 in either .300 savage or .308. Down here in south texas these guns are even more scarce than usual so when I saw a scoped .300 in my local gun shop I got exited..... until I saw the price tag. The shop owner (not present at the time) wanted $850 (for a later '60's F model) and the owners grandson working the counter said it was "because he had taken two of them in a trade years ago and didn't want to loose money on them". The owners grandson even conceded that realistically it was probably closer to a $650 rifle. Needless to say I found another 99 later.

for one I agree Ian from forgotten weapons is probably the guy who knows almost every thing about the classic and old rifles. British muzzle loader does great videos as well and to add sense of humor. for those that love the Enfield R.C. aka rifle chair is a great one on the Lee Enfield. and has other great videos as well. and I have watched the others that you have mentioned and they are great as well. I'd also point out that if a rifle has true history with paperwork to prove who's it was it'll bring that much more if it is certain personal. or came from a certain group, with documentation of course.

I own a Colt Python that's probably worth well over $2k now. When I bought it it came in the original box and had about 100 rounds through it.
I shoot the snot out of it. Same goes for my Mini-14 factory folder, Savage 99 brush gun, Antique Winchesters, Springfields, Colts, etc. Everything gets shot.

Great video Eric and Chad. You were speaking of mauser's and that reminded me of a 1909 Argentine mauser I'm going to be getting at a local pawn shop. It's in very nice shape for being around since 1910 and still has it's matching numbers cleaning rod but sadly no bayonet. It must have been in America for a long time because it doesn't even have any import markings on it. That will make it the oldest gun i own. Before i found that it was a 1923 mosin hex receiver still covered in cosmoline. I've become a bit of a small time collector from watching your channel among others and have managed to aquire a few decent milsurps over the past 3 or 4 years. Oh hey Chad i have a 1943 Long Branch Enfield, my first milsurp since i was a teenager.

In most cases condition, provenance and rarity determine value. Unfortunately how many times has someone brought you a gun thinking that Grandpa's well used gun, of a common brand and model thought it was worth what a mint condition version is worth. This is particularly true when they have a common caliber/gauge while the top dollar versions are in a fairly rare caliber or with unusual sights or other features.

One side note to condition is provenance. That beat up Chinese SKS could have its value increased 4-5 times if it has LEGITIMATE Viet Nam capture papers.
There are now unscrupulous individuals faking capture papers so be careful. Sometimes a historical gun can have legitimate paperwork and still be a fake. For example, Jessie James' mom used to get beat up hand guns that she would sell as a 'gun Jessie carried' compete with signed note. Some were made years after Jessie shot. Additionally, even participants in an event, suffering from fading memory can give incorrect provenance as in case with the misidentified Remington semi-auto that supposedly shot Bonnie and Clyde.
Anyway what that particular firearm experienced, if legitimate and connected to a person or theatre of operation, increases value to many collectors.

It cost me a small fortune to find the stuff like wood stock cleaning kit and original 10 rnd mag.

Ignoring their shooting videos and 5 guns videos, their 100+ Gun Gripes videos are one of the best content of the gun community on this website. I was never a huge fan of this channel even when Barry was there, but he made it watchable. I've always took this channel's reviews with a grain of salt because they never were actual reviews, just showcasing products like hickok45.
End of the day, they chose to support the reprehensible actions of the NRA. The very same organization we donate to PROTECT our gun rights and they tried selling us out at a moment's notice...and they're trying to get us to donate more money to the organization that cheated us.
The NRA doesn't hold all that much power. All they are is a overpriced dog whistle that swoops in for the glory. Gun owners are exceptionally politically active. The NRA wanted NOTHING to do with the Heller case...but certainly reap the benefits.

    • @mathewashley06
      @mathewashley06 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Rusty Shackleford You talk about the NRA like its some shadowy underworld figure hellbent on world domination. The NRA is made up of people, millions of americams actually. So it doesnt matter how you feel about the NRA, your not a leftist, stop showcasing your feelings like one. The NRA represents millions of gun owners in America, and it was their members who voiced the opinion that bumb stocks were sacrificial. If the NRA would have got negative feedback on bumpstock bans, they wouldn't have pursued that option. And any serious firearms enthusiast doesn't waste their money on bumpstocks. The NRA does what its members allow. So millions of gun owners sat on their asses and did nothing while this happened. Stop blaming the NRA. Its the people who make up that organization that allowed bumpstocks to potentially be banned

Actually, most of the work done on the Trapdoor isn't bad, but you have to keep in mind, most of that work was probably done at a time when those guns were next to worthless. Go through some of the old gun mags from the 50's and the 60's and they were selling guns like that in mint condition for $15-$20 and even Mausers and M1's for under $50 each. So yeah it sucks to see it but when it was done, the gun was not worth what it is now mint. I have a Swede Mauser that was cut down many years ago, they're still not worth more than $500-$600 today in most cases for the standard M96 which is what this is. So to me, well, it's worth it as a great shooter.

Eric/Chad, on the subject of shooting everything in your collection, how would one go about validating that the weapon they have inherited is safe to shoot? I have an old Sharps Carbine (.52 cal original civil war) that's been in my family forever and I'd LOVE to take it to the range, but I worry about degrading its value. Should I take it somewhere to have the chamber / barrel magnafluxed for fractures?
