Door lock repair on Volvo XC70. Replacing electrical motor.

  • Common problem on Volvo XC70 and other models is malfunctioning og the door locks. Instead of replacing the whole lock assembly you can repair it by just replacing the small electric motor which is way cheaper.
    The spring was from a used lock assembly but the common problem is the motor itself.
    This video also shows how to disconnect the glass window from its regulator also how to remove the handle and the inner door panel.
    The motor is available for purchase here:

    You just saved me a half a day.
    I've done timing belt, oil change etc by myself but I don't think I would put this door lock together. With your video I actually did and to my surprise it is fixed!

    The detail in this video is just superb. We've used this to do three doors on two cars (V70 and S80) and broken down step by step the daunting job becomes ok. Rather than repairing the actuator we swapped out for salvage parts, and the same motor module is used across all kinds of cars from across the mid noughties Ford family, including Volvos, Ford Mondeo and Focus. We got good results using actuators from a Range Rover, though you do need to swap over one simple component. Thanks so much for all of your hard work, and for narrating your videos in English.

    Perfect video, I replaced the passenger side lock motor without any problem. It took me about 3 hours, i’m not the fastest I know, but I had fun doing it. Maybe because of the model year, mine is a V70 my 2012, but I didn’t need a torx 30. 25 was the largest. Спасибо большое, Евгени! I wouldn’t have been able to do without you!

    Just wanted to add my thanks for this video, it made the replacement of the motors on both of the front doors on my XC70 very easy. If I hadn't found this video I would have probably blindly replaced the entire lock assembly.
    One of the door pins/buttons was sitting lower on my car. After watching this video I assumed I'd probably find the spring missing but it was actually just the plastic button itself which had split and been forced down further onto the metal rod. It epoxied back together nicely.
    I also greased my window regulaltors whilst the doors were apart, this seems to have resolved an issue I had with the windows sometimes stopping prematurely, probably because they experienced too much resistance.

    My rear door was faulty. It was the same motor that was responsible, also the spring had popped off. Although process very similar, there is no need to lower the window. Thank you for your clear video on how to do everything. I'm in the UK and the part alone was almost £200. got the motors for £16 and it took me approx 2 hours to do. Thank you once again.

    I had to do this on my C6 Corvette a few years ago, and I have to say...this is way more challenging on the Volvo. With the corvette, I basically did it in a parking lot in about 10 minutes. Driver side plastic held by gator clips comes right out and the piece can be pulled from the inside without removing any screws. Then you can just swap with 1-for-1 part. But thanks for this video, saved it in case my XC70 ever has this problem.

    Thanks! First video I found and it helped a lot. Especially the details about all the screws and knobs. In my case it was not the spring but the bigger of two motors (in Volvo V70 -13 there is one big and one small motor). I took apart the motor and it was full of grease. Removed the grease and cleaned it. Now good again. New motor ordered Ebay for 7eur but that will come in if it acts like that again in the future.

    great video, respect.keep up the good job! I did replace my front left door lock motors based on this. Only part where I got stucked a bit is putting back the lock itself. there is a little hook which must be at the right place over the body panel otherwise the lock can not be screwed back. once figured this out then it was an easy job (you need a second person to help otherwise it can be very difficult at certain steps).

    • @DapperDerek
      @DapperDerek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kerekgyartoistvan thank you for this tip. I got stuck here as well. For further detail, this hook is actually metal and when installed correctly hooks to outside of the door lock hole. If you are working on the driver's side door and the door handle and lock are not installed, then you will see 3 holes: 2 for the door handle and one (rightmost) for the door lock cylinder. You must install the inner assembly such that a tiny metal hook/finger protrudes out of the cylinder lock hole in the door and grabs the sheet metal. If you do not do this then the assembly does not sit flush to the inside of the door and you cannot screw in the T25 screw to fasten the cylinder lock. In fact you end up stripping the outside of the guide hole and getting frustrated, only to come back to this thread hoping to find a search term that explains how you are messing up. Once you have the inner assembly flush with the door panel and the little hook/finger outside then the T25 goes straight in no problem. Thanks again kerekgyartoistvan.

    I am experiencing same problem on my 2009 XC70 T6, identical to yours. I noticed that the passenger side lock button does not alway go all the way down when I lock the vehicle with the remote. My temp fix is to click the lock button twice. This seems to ensure that the passenger door is locked. I purchased the rear tail light module from your friend 2 years ago. It works beautifully and makes my older XC70 look like the newer ones from the rear! If my lock finally stops working, I now have an inexpensive way to repair it.

    Thanks for the video- I have now done a door mirror and the lock on a passenger door. On my 2015 car, when changing the lock motor i found that the glass is just clipped in- remove the speaker and feel for the plastic mould that supports the glass- if you flex it while lifting the glass it comes clear. You can then carry on as per your video. Thanks, Andrew.

    Great video! Thanks Yvegeny! I just completed this on my 2010 Volvo XC60. I reckon that saved me about £500, so really appreciate you posting it.
    One thing that XC60 owners may find useful is about the step for releasing the window glass from the actuator mechanism. Volvo has changed it on the XC60. Instead of two bolts there are two clips. You still access them via the two service holes with rubber covers, as in Yvegeny’s video. However, it looks very different. You need to let the window down a bit more. After you see the steel cables go down, you will be in about the right place. The bottom of the glass should be just below the bottom of the righthand service hole. Through the black metal frame that you can see through the hole there is a clip that is coming towards you through the glass. You can release the clip by pushing it gently away from you. I used a 5mm allen wrench. However, you need help at this point. You have to release both clips at the same time. So have a friend hold the glass and gently apply upwards pressure. Then line up one allen wrench (or screwdriver would likely work), on each clip, left and right. Pop them at the same time and your friend can raise up the window a bit. Then secure with tape as Yvegeny did. I could not find how to do this anywhere online, so I hope this helps a few XC60 owners. Cheers!

    I did this job a few years ago thanks to a forum guide. Maybe I wasn't taking my time but I messed up a lot of small parts so from my experience:
    a) don't leave the door lock pin hanging like that, it's still only held on by plastic and on my lock it broke.
    b) when he says "don't overtighten" the mechanism that holds the glass, really don't. I overtightened mine (without realizing it, because this was 4 years ago and I'm an idiot) and stripped the threads. Had to buy a salvage yard new window mechanism and redo this whole job more or less.
    c) be careful with bit-tools when putting them in holes to the innards of the door. I managed to have bits get caught when pulling the tool out from within the door and had to re-disassemble the door 2-3 times.
    Just some tips. I think I just had a bad day, it's not that hard, but can be a bit finicky here and there.

    Rear Door - your instructions also work ok for a 2007 S80 rear door, but releasing the wiring harness was even more difficult. I'm a former engineer/prototype technician and for me, the repair process was difficult, but worth the savings.
    Remove the door handle and disconnect its wiring before removing the metal panel. Other videos show this in more detail.
    Get a sturdy box to support the metal door panel as you disconnect the multitude of wiring connector puzzles. Otherwise, the heavy metal panel will hang from the wires over many sharp metal edges. I cut some wires because of this.
    I had trouble finding the 3rd retaining clip inside the door, so I removed the plastic reinforcement in the bottom of the door and found the $#%^% spring! I reinstalled the spring, but it fell out again very easily. Very poor engineering from Ford/Volvo. I drilled a small hole into the black plastic and riveted in a custom retainer plate to keep the spring in place.
    My repair shop quoted $680 to repair the lazy lock. I almost bought a new lock motor assembly for $208. After watching this video, I bought the motor only for $13. The real problem was the $0.02 spring designed to fall off. This is my first and soon-to-be last Volvo.
    Thanks so much for the detailed video. You saved many people a lot of money.

      Are you sure of that ? Because I have this issue on my rear left door.
      Just cleaning the electrical motor ?
      Thanks

    • @Onizula
      @Onizula 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arthursbarf hi. It went well. The tricky part is with the window, to get it up. There is a hook that holds the window to lift it up and down. First you have to remove the speaker to access the hook and release the window. And from there this is pretty much the same as for the front door procedure. And I replace the motor, to be sure. Do you have this issue ?

      @@Onizula my 2008 has the same intermittent locking issue (on the drivers side) in the wintertime. But when it does this, the power to the door is also malfunctioning. I’m unable to roll any of the windows down with the switches on the door panel, and also when locking the car with the key fob, the drivers side (front and back) do not lock and the exterior lights do not flash.
      Do you think this is the same problem? Or is my issue something electrical?

    If keyless vehicle option is fitted isn’t there a cable to deal with on outside handle for the black lock button on handle?

    I have a S60 2012 and those 3 triangle placed tabs are covered on the panel. I can't push in those plastic three pins to remove the inner panel... I also brought the window down 15cm but I can't see any bolts in the large two holes, just plastic holding the window

    Hi,I'm getting a very loud rattling sound on my XC60 engine when I start it in the morning and it goes off after 30sec probably when the oil lubricates it but the rattling sound is loud when you accelerate it. Could it be the sound of a loose timing chain? Is it a difficult fix. Thanks

    Thanks guys! I have the driver's "Door Open" warning displaying, and I presume that the microswitch that you pulled out could be at fault?
    Is this a common problem?

    Great demonstration and explanation. It does however, looks an awful lots of work. olvo should correct it's mistake and put a reliable motor in every car.

    Hi, excellent explanation :). I replaced the motor and all works fine. But I did not have any spring there. It must have got lost. Do you know where it's possible to buy it? Original or from any other car using the same sprig. Thanks.

      Hi. I just tried to do the same yesterday on my XC70 2015 and I had to give up not being able to free the inner panel from the window glass. Simmilar two large service holes (but not horizontally aligned) are there as well but there is no way to access any screws behind in any window position. How did you do it?

    • @Benjamin-gd6yh
      @Benjamin-gd6yh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Forget8About8It open those two holes and drive the window elevator down and up until you can se the fastner to the glas in the hole. Then unclip the window glas threw the hole and lift it up by hand and fasten it with painters tejp to the frame. Then detache the cabels from the innerpanel. Then follow volvoswedens fabulous video! Good luck!
