  • In this video, I'm showing how to fix and diagnose a charging problem with a motorcycle.
    Tools used in this repair:
    Philips head screwdriver
    10mm wrench or ratchet
Multimeter for AC/DC voltage and resistance
    Steps followed in this video:
    1. Verify that the issue is no charging by measuring the DC voltage across the terminals in the fuse box. If the bike is charging correctly, there should be 13-14 VDC while the bike is running at ~3000 RPM.
    2. If the charging is verified to not work, next look at the wires that are coming from the stator. First, measure the resistance across all three pairs. You are looking for ~0 Ohms. If the resistance looks good next, measure the AC voltage across all three pairs while the bike is running at ~3000 RPM. It should be 50-60 VAC.
If neither of these tests are in the correct ranges, check the wires and the stator for defects.
    3. If the stator passes the tests, next we check the regulator/rectifier. To check this, reference the service manual for the table of approved resistance values for the regulator/rectifier.
If the regulator doesn't pass the test, check the wires for defects.
    4. If the wires are in good condition, but the regulator does not pass the previous test, it will need to be replaced. Check the new regulator against the previous test to make sure the new regulator works. If it passes, plug in the new regulator/rectifier in and repeat step 1.
    5. If test 1 is passed with the new rectifier, complete the install and check test 1 again to make sure no wires were pinched in installation.
