      Yeah...I mean you first get your land wrecked by some demons, then dragons, then giants then you cant go into your forest anymore because some weird mist fills the woods and after that gets dealt with for some reason you dont know a frickin deathcurse destroys nearly all of civilisation and depending on what ending you choose for Avernus either a giant City disapears and reappears or just stays in hell so now you can be terrified of that randomly happening. To be honest, this would work perfectly as the backstory for a human ranger or human fighter or maybe even paladin and cleric. Like he is so annoyed by the stuff that just keeps happening around him that he takes up adventuring. Maybe even for a evil human Warlock BBEG. Like someone who feels threatened by all this stuff that he called out to some dragon, fey, lich or demon or even Cthulhu/King in Yellow/Yog Sothoth/etc. to get enough power to feel safe, only to be so utterly corrupted by his new power that he becomes the new thing that happens to the World - maybe even beeing the reason for some other normal everyday joe to become an adventurer to defeat him! This is starting to intrigue me enough to write some NPCs

      After binging all 38 of the Drizzt audiobooks recently, I came to the conclusion that it’d be a nightmare to be a common person living on Faerun.
      If your semi-rural family’s innocence isn’t getting brutalised by Orc / Troll / Goblin raids (or wars), then your city-dwelling family is being preyed on by vampires / devil-worshippers / demon-possessed nobility.
      That said… I’d still probably take living in Faerun over living our current (and oh-so-obviously darkest) timeline here on Earth.

      Dungeons and dragons is like legos. Yeah the lego kits have very complex instructions, but creating your own stuff has always been the original way to play with them. Which sucks because goddammit there are some things I like to homebrew as a GM (lore and story mods) and I was hoping the book would help me avoid the stuff I don't want to do (maps, finishing 5e mechanics, designing fun dungeons)! Dragon of Icespire Peak (essentials kit, DoIP) actually takes place much longer ago because of one reason. In Storm King's Thunder (STK), in the frost giants lair (I can't remember the name of the lair), there is an adult white dragon named Cryovain and in DoIP the young white dragon, that acts as the 'villain', is called Cryovain as well, which could suggest DoIP takes place long before STK, maybe a few centuries or so.

    I’m currently doing this with my group and am interpreting the order of events kind of loosely. My opinion is that these things are all such earth shattering events all happing within a (relatively) short 4-5 year time period that it totally makes sense for them to overlap each other. In my spin it goes like this: LMoP and DoIP (and subsequent expansions revolving around Leilon) all happen at roughly the same time leading into HotDQ/RoT and SKT all happening at the same time. My guidelines are that as long as this combination of modules happen AFTER OotA and BEFORE ToA and AI, it works with some light tweaking to create an awesome “2nd Giant-Dragon War” Saga for one party. Then adventures like RotFM and PotA are handled by other separate parties WHILE that main party is dealing with the Giants and the Dragons.
    Also I include Dragon Heist as an “evil characters only” campaign since in my timeline, the heist is part of the Dragon Cult’s plan to build Tiamat’s horde.

  • @Bear-co2hb
    @Bear-co2hb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This is a very interesting idea. I very much enjoy continuity and timelines, but it's a bit rough, because WotC wrote the adventures almost like every adventuring group to be it's own diverging storyline. For groups that stick together for a long time, I think that's an exciting prospect, because maybe folks ran Frostmaiden together, then did Stormking's Thunder. Since they both have parts set in Icewind Dale, it'd be fun to hear about the brave adventurers that did...so and so, or to even meet the characters, if maybe one of them retired to run an Inn or became an elected official.
    I'm not sure if it's the group that I play with, but the year has never really come up in most stories, other than for minor character backstory things (Pre-hotenow Neverwinter, etc), so I've never thought about it. Until my group played Frostmaiden, the books never really had much of an impact either. I suppose our group in general has preferred to keep to our own timeline, and sprinkle in fun little easter eggs and callbacks when we can.

    Personally, I like to run Tomb Of Annihilation (ToA) after Waterdeep Dragon Heist. Although Dungeon Crawls can be fun, Dungeon of the Mad Mage was too much of a dungeon crawl. On the opposite side, ToA is too much of a Wilderness Exploration, thus I made sure to insert some dungeon crawls into it.

    That'd be like 17 years worth of sessions minimum with how often my group meets but i'd love that. Currently we're running SKT and ToA in parallel. So, one thing I do know about the timeline is that Dragon of Icespire Peak should happen shortly after Storm Kings Thunder, since Cryovain is supposed to free himself/be saved from the Frost Giants in STK and then head to Phandalin to establish a layer in DoIP. Doesn't fit in nicely with that timeline though.

      @whiskeyhound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say that those are different dragons that just got the same name in common, since one is an adult white that's had it's kids stolen and the one in DoIP is a young one.

  • @mikegould6590

    It makes me wonder why they didn't release them IN ORDER. I mean, they claim that LMoP is the starting adventure for nearly everything, yet, it did not occur until the middle of the timeline. It's just another reason to walk away from the Forgotten Realms. So far:
    -Dragons and Giants everywhere yet there is zero repercussions for how much these creatures consume/destroy
    -Nations without natural borders who apparently either openly or secretly war yet nothing changes.
    -There are apocalyptic events every few years yet the world never changes. Each even could potentially end the world...yet never does. It's like living in a comic book.
    -Somehow there are potentially super high level characters wandering everywhere...so heroes aren't really exceptional. Yay.
    -In a world where magic seems required to exist, and resurrection is a joke, Tomb of Annihilation would kill THOUSANDS. Yet did not. Imagine the effect on faiths and religions that use their power to resurrect to gain favor. Imagine the possible religious upheaval. Did anything change? No? Right.
    -Out of the Abyss SHOULD have triggered either an incursion of Angels, or the Devils would have taken a hand in altering the Blood War. After all, either their support in the FR would have been in danger, OR the major leaders of the Demonic side would have been in the material plane and not supporting the attack on Avernus.
    -Curse of Strahd is another plane of existence with it's own weird timeline, so it's appearance is irrelevant. It's timeline is cyclical.
    -And as far as Acq Inc being canon, the players encountered and played through these events when they were released, not when this list references it. It's seriously out of order - a completely separate timeline. It makes NO sense. Watch the Acq Inc TH-cam series. It completely smashes this timeline.
    So which is it? Is Acq Inc canon, or this list...despite it's own clear contradictions either way.
    FR is a mess. It's literally written like some hackneyed soap opera where the actions of some evil twin half-brother's best friend are presented in a way that they will change the world...and then are just as quickly forgotten. Even the insanity and dread of Barovia makes more sense. Avernus makes more sense. Ed Greenwood drank his own Kool Aid.

    If you read the comments on that blog there are errors and disconnects wrt LMOP and DOIP. Specifically, they occur around the same year due to NPC descriptions and ages. Further, the follow on Beyond Icespire Peak trilogy that follows DOIP has Leilon in the early phases of rebuilding. I believe that means in happens before SKT because of some description of Leilon therein.
    The justification of AI and dates, I'd take more with a grain of salt due to the tone of that adventure.
    IIRC there were other oversights in the blog too.

    I have a suggestion for a "part 2 video", if you're interested to continue talking about the timeline of events: this same article details the names of future years after the events of Avernus/Acquisitions.
    Like, 1494 DR is called "The Year of Twelve Warnings" and we know it's the same year Elturel is pulled into the Nine Hells. Maybe this is one of the warnings. What about the other eleven? 1499 DR is the "Year of the Desperate Gambit"... what gambit is this and how can it be connected to a previous module?
    What do future years' names might mean and how do they connect with the already published adventures? Maybe the obelisks that keep appearing on the adventures might have some sort of connection.
    It'd be interesting to see you talking about it.

    In the end I put RoT in 1485. Basically the author of the post decided published organized play material has precedence over novels. I decided to put the novel first because it's how the 5e timeline starts.

    It's funny I actually made my own timeline a while back, not based off of anything as detailed as in the books, but thematically setting these all together in an MCU Style format as I knew them. Hopefully using the same players, they would create at least 3 characters that after the first adventures they would begin picking to mix and match for all subsequent adventures.
    First one party would tackle the Tyranny of Dragons adventures. This is Team A.
    Once that is over, Team B would be introduced they would start in Phandalin playing a Mix of Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragon of Icespire Peak, then move on to Princes of the Apocalypse only to be captured by drow at the end! Team B would then do Out of the Abyss (the main tie here is the drow priest of Tharizdun).
    Next we're introduced to Team C (though maybe one member of team A is involved), and they become aware that because of what happened with the Cult of the Dragon, the Ordening has been broken and Storm King's Thunder happens.
    Now things begin to cross-over because some, if not all, of Team A have gone off to Thay to investigate the Red Wizard's influence and the Doomvault adventure is used.
    Next some if not all of Team C decides to look into the Ring of Winter and they follow rumors to Chult and to Tomb of Annihilation. They return to Baldur's gate afterward.
    But first a comedic interlude where all of the leftover characters or maybe some fun new ones run the Waterdeep adventures as the Guardians of the Galaxy of this scenario.
    "Finally" we come to the climax of the first stage as members of all 3 teams find themselves in Baldur's Gate for the events of Descent into Avernus, fighting devils, demons (from OotA) and an angry Tiamat who knows at least Team A. The day (and maybe Zariel) is saved, but a cry for help comes from the sealed off North of Icewind Dale.
    First there is a flash-back to Legacy of the Crystal Shard with a "new" team D and then an open mix of all four teams goes on to run Rime of the Frostmaiden.
    This would be chaos with so much continuity to keep track of and characters of high and mixed levels in any given adventure, but boy would it be fun.

    I see a problem with Rime of the Frostmaiden being before Storm King’s Thunder.
    It says in Rime of the Frostmaiden that Auril has been set up in Icewind Dale for two years and that it hasn’t seen a summer in those two years. We see no evidence of Icewind Dale suffering the effects of the Everlasting Rime during Storm King’s Thunder (granted it came out after.)
    In Storm King’s Thunder there are several businesses open in Bryn Shander that make no appearance in RotF. Presumably this is because the long winter drove them out of business. In SKT, Bryn Shander has stone walls, in RotF it has a wooden palisade. This is probably because the Frost Giant siege in SKT knocked down large portions of the old stone wall.
    All in all, there’s a lot of evidence that SKT already happened in RotF.

    If you set your Storm King's Thunder after your Rise of Tiamat, you might have difficulty getting your players to accept a balloon ride from some friendly Cult of the Dragon members. I definitely think those two modules might go better in the other order. That way, you can have a low-level flunky of the cult running this balloon errand, and the players bond with her a little, and then she turns up later commanding a raiding party attacking Greenest.

    I don’t play them in Chronological order - but for each table I DM for all FR games happen in the same Universe and their previous characters have a chance to appear. Of my current table, the only living survivor of my tomb of annihilation campaign is now chief of security to one of the Lord of Waterdeep and lives next door to the Trollskull Tavern in Dragon Heist. The survivors of Dragon Heist are now split in a joint campaign between Rime of the Frost Maiden and Storm Kings - my players have separate characters for both campaigns and love the rivalry - the Storm Kings table has a paladin of Auril who is trying to proselytize the frost giants away from Thrym. He claims Auril can remove the great glacier and restore the lost giant kingdom of Ostoria.
    The Rime campaign - they are working against Auril and very aware of the other groups machinations and reduce Aurils influence. (They actually love working against themselves lol)

It rreferences the Giant attack of 89' as well as the capture of Weevil 10 years ago when he was caught coming back to town for the famous firebrandy. I know because in my own timeline, Storm King's Thunder story hasn't happened yet and I was reading that to the players and was like.well actually this is news that has not yet passed yet, haha

    I think I forced my games to play differently, but thats ok. Theyre still mostly in the same order, just the times are a bit whacky. I've been playing an entire family of adventurers sequentially starting at ToA, then we jumped to Avernus some 20 years later where I played her daughter and were having waterdeep now running parallel. I like that the books dont really state the times as a solid thing so that I can do whacky things like that. :)

Bring in some old school rules like the characters have to find time to train to gain levels as well as spend time training and money on that training would make it interesting.

    Nice Forgotten Realms Chronological Order to add an interesting twist to the Published Order. Large enough library to organize play of DnD 5e. So Ghosts of Saltmarsh and Tales is excluded because unofficially Greyhawk-ish and what about the Tales from the Yawning Portal construction of the inn?

    • @juliemichellerobinson1841
      @juliemichellerobinson1841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Saltmarsh and Yawning Portal are both taken directly from older editions. Therefore, while official 5E versions exist I'd say that the adventures therein would probably predate the 5E timeline. Tales from the Yawning Portal literally contains Against the Giants, which is G1-2-3 from AD&D 1st Edition, and The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan which is C1. Saltmarsh contains U1-2-3. They are all set in Greyhawk, which also puts them outside the Faerun timeline.
