  • Scenes from 1999 to 2006 showing the transition era from Conrail Blue to Norfolk Southern Black on NS Harrisburg Division and Conrail Shared Assets. Lots of Dash 8's and PRR lettered blue locos. Pardon the quality differences as these videos were shot on three different cameras.

    This is why I think NS should at least repaint 1 of their SD80s into conrail Quality Paint scheme so we can at least Remember the CR in more than a Es44ac

      Been many years since I've seen one but it always was a thing of beauty. Since Conrail was the only railroad to purchase them it certainly makes sense to paint at least ONE in its original colors.

      @Star Giant Productions Yes, but it doesn't capture the essence of Conrail. Conrail never had ES44s, so it would make more sense to paint a single remaining SD80MAC in Conrail Quality colours

    The early to mid 00s are pretty underrated for railfanning. A lot of new model locomotives that have become mainstays (SD70s and GEVOs) with nearly extinct on mainlines Dash 8-9s along with AC6000CWs, SD60i's, SW1500s. At least the Geeps are still safe.

    Love the K5LA's NS use to have.Also the RS3's the CR was known for.

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      During the Conrail years, we got tired of hearing the RS-3L's because they were so common. It was nice to hear a K5 because you knew it was either a Chessie or D&H train, something different. We used to call it the "ABC's" (Anything But Conrail). Now I get a flash of nostalgia every time I hear an ex-CR unit go by with an RS-3L on it.

      @@fmnut Interesting. Would have been one of the very first uses of a GW E-bell on freight power then. There was an order of NS Dash 9s being delivered with E-Bells in 2000 which could provide a clue as to where it came from.

    On the 3426, you can see PRR below the numbers on the side of the cab. I’ve only found prr to stand for Pennsylvania railroad, but that’s been long gone. I’ve also seen it on NS units. What does it mean?

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      At the time of the Conrail split, CR units going to NS were sublettered PRR to avoid conflicts with units going to CSX. Similarly all CR freight cars going to CSX were sublettered NYC. These markings are no longer relevant.

      @@fmnut No. NS came in 80's itself. In 1998-99 NS expanded itself and took half of Conrail. That's why the part of Conrail taken by NS, which includes GE Dash 7, GE Dash 8, GE Dash 9, SD60AC, SD70AC and SD80AC is known as NS-*Conrail*

    • @fmnut
      @fmnut  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JishyFishy4106 you are confused. Norfolk Southern was formed in 1982 by a merger of the Norfolk and Western railroad and the Southern Railway. In 1999, Conrail was split, 58% went to NS and 42% went to CSX. There were several areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Detroit that were important to both carriers and could not be separated equitably. These became Conrail Shared Assets, a separate company whose revenue is divided on the same ratio as the original split. Equipment is provided by the parent companies. There is no such thing as NS Conrail!
