    My Dad installed a drop ceiling in our basement years ago when we were kids. When we became adults, he said they use to hide Christmas presents up there so we couldn't sneak a peek at the presents. - Loved this video!

    I did this in my kitchen back when the ceiling leaked and the plaster came down. I didn't have the skill or desire to do drywall on this old house, so I just up the drop ceiling. What an amazing help it was too. I was able to rewire the entire kitchen very easily! It's held up very well and still looks as good as the day I put it up. Fast forward 16 years and I'm buying a new home. The basement is not finished. What a great reminder that I can easily install this ceiling down there and hide all the plumbing and wiring without losing access to it.

      I almost always go drop ceiling in a basement as long as height allows it. It's so much easier to replace a ceiling tile or 2 when you eventually have a leak also if you need to ever access what's up in the joists just pop a tile or 2 and move it out of the way and move it back when you finished

      great option to manage sound proofing options as you move forward.

    • @ptessier73
      @ptessier73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY On your previous video where you did soundproofing, you mentioned using SONOPAN with a suspended ceiling. Of course, by doing that, you lose access to whatever is in the ceiling but you don't have to worry about doing the mud. However I see one issue with doing that. Lets say you strap your ceiling with 1/3 every 16 inches to attach the SONOPAN boards, that means you get a gap of 1 3/8" between the SONOPAN and the joist trust and those pins used to fish the wires seem like 1 1/2"... What would you recommend in that case?.. Also.. How confident are you that a ceiling with INSULATION (R12) + SONOPAN + Suspended ceiling would provide good soundproofing, especially that you have to place those pins directly on the joist trust or the 1x3 woof straps which would transmit sound over.... Last but not least, I imagine a suspended ceiling is not a good choice for a bathroom with a shower in a basement right? Sorry, those are 3 questions there...

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

    • @jasonswoger410
      @jasonswoger410 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ptessier73 soundproofing is just a matter of terminating vibration. All the fibers in Insulation make it a great way to damper the vibration of sound moving through a wall. Think of it like a metal plenum disbursing heat so that something doesn't get hot enough to ignite. If you can temper the vibration you can temper the sound

    interesting math at 14:39. If you want the first recessed tile to sit and be aligned with the wall hanger's edge. you should cut 3/8 from the cross tee insert which is where the small hole is, giving the wall hanger is 7/8" in wide.
    Good thing you did not cut it short.

    Jeff, I really enjoyed watching this video on how to install a suspended ceiling! I have worked with suspended ceilings before, but have most of my experience with just cutting and installing the ceiling panels. The project I will be working on is in a bathroom as the ceiling is in bad shape and my customer would like me to install a suspened ceiling. The room is only 6' x 6', so it is very small, but there is also a light fixture in the center of the ceiling that my customer would like me to replace as well.

    Hi Jeff, my cousin used to put those ceilings in and one day when I was on holiday, I went with him to install a ceiling. I found it extremely easy and we installed this ceiling in about three hours, I was horrified when he dropped of my half of the install over six hundred pounds, so he was charging double that and he told me that if he asked less he would not get the job because people would think he was not doing a good job. I put a dropped ceiling in my house and as you have shown it is one of the easiest jobs around and I would not feel comfortable charging the prices he did as a result I have only installed two dropped ceilings in my lifetime.

      @@noelrodrigue5542 Depends on how big the room is. You can measure down off the joist in the corners if it’s a square room. You can mark your height for the top of the mold and level with a level and then chalk the wall to the corner mark with level on the next wall and then chalk that wall. Go all the way around the room this way. Pull some strings across and level ceiling to the strings.

    I'm finishing my basement in Edmonton, and I'm really debating drop vs drywall. I've fortunately got a Panel-lift so drywalling isn't too backbreaking. I like the minimum amount of height loss and appearance of drywall, but damn ceiling tile is so much easier to put together.

    I'm here because we have a leak in the PVC pipe from kitchen sink down to my dad's computer room. We have the old Armstrong 1ft by 1 ft tiles my dad installed years ago. Trying to figure out how to take them down. He just turned 94 Christmas Eve so he's not as sharp as he used to be even though I've asked him how they were installed. I'm just preparing myself because I have to take a few out from the corner of the room as the pipe is right up against the heat vent. Not sure how easy this is going to be but it's leaking from the joint and then I will have to replace a few tiles only, hopefully not the full room. I'm pretty handy so getting started at something you've never done before always seems harder than it really is. I've renovated his bathroom including changing out the plumbing under the sink installing the faucet and new countertop and adding a new toilet thanks to your videos. I haven't attempted changing out the plumbing for a new shower and I have watched your video on that one but am not ready to tackle it yet because I know I have to break the tiles and cut the copper as you've showed. All in time. Thanks for all your great videos!

    Well done. I saw that they now sell special clips that you can attach above the celiling that you simply insert the hang wire through and you can use them to level the T system by pinching the clips that act like a spring to hold the wire. Any idea how costly they are? Your method avoids those and is (I believe) more cost efficient. However the clips might prove handy for some.

    For low ceiling heights, check out the CeilingMAX system. I’ve been switching over my crummy old metal system that the prior owner installed decades ago in many areas with 0-1” of clearance above the tiles, and it’s basically impossible to remove and put back together without completely destroying the tiles, metal frame, or both. If you destroy the tiles & frame when taking them down to access plumbing/electric/etc, seems like there’s no real benefit to having a traditional drop ceiling in these situations. As a functional alternative for low clearance situations, definitely check out the CeilingMAX. Added benefit is that it’s 100% plastic and won’t rust if ever exposed to moisture. I bought mine in a kit from Home Depot, but I think they can be ordered from a bunch of places online.

    Our basement is one of the future projects on the list. It used to have the drop ceiling. I was contemplating whether to do that or a painted shiplap using brad nails. That way it wouldnt be too hard to pop off if I needed access in the future...

    When do you show how to do the 1 or 2 inch spacing method? I have 8 foot ceilings, so I don't want to go all way down 4 inches. And I do want to hopefully use sonopan only. Would you recommend this? I own my condo, so I could also remove the drywall, but like you said, that's a bigger undertaking.

    Great video Jeff, but I followed the instructions for cutting the track ends to align with a 24 inch tile, and I ended up with too much on that end. The first 3/8 inch after the slot is all you should do. I had to redo the cut and that made my complete length too short it is now barely hanging on to the frame. You might want to clarify that in your video if you can. Otehr than that great tips and tricks, you are really good at these instructional type videos! Thanks

      Im about to do my ceilling and i was not understanding that point too because i think the 3/8 and actually the 3/4 depending of the length of the edge of the track, should be the length you keep at the 3inchs section of the main track. I was thinking the same thing why he add 3/8 to 3/4 at the 3 inches section for the main track. Would be nice to clarify that :)

    I have watched this video over and over again. It mentions minimum drop of 3 inches in order to be able to get the ceiling tiles into place. I am into my project about three days now. Set up my grid, but I have to put tiles in from the end of the grid and walk them all the way across the ceiling. In order to drop them into the correct 2 x 2 spaces. I tried every possible angle to put tiles in place at their respective locations, and it is absolutely impossible. There’s not enough room between the grid and the floor joists. 3 inch minimum doesn’t seem to be accurate however, I did need to maintain that particular height because I only have 7 foot ceilings in my basement. So far, the entire project is working out The finished product is looking pretty good even though I am probably doing extra work that wouldn’t normally be necessary if I had the ability to come down a little lower. 3 inches does not allow for installation of tiles from what I have discovered through my experience.

    I just checked your video and found it extremely helpful but I have just two questions. 1. Does your basement ceiling need the strapping (it looks like 1'" x 3" strapping)? and 2. You indicated that you were going to provide some info on the cost per square foot. Did I miss that or is estimating the cost of this drop ceiling in another video?

  • @josephkelly3184
    @josephkelly3184 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I could see this way for home owners , good video . It’s a lot easier if you can get it laid out and install all the wires after the angle is up and set up jet lines for your first main and tee line and use the laser to level it and just tie it the laser line for level .

    Years ago we rented an old farmhouse we eventually bought. It wasnt installed properly. I think they just put nails in a mud and lathe ceiling to suspend it from. So on a Thanksgiving evening while we were all sleeping it let go with a boom, bang n clatter. Gave a whole new mean to "drop ceiling. "

    Hey Jeff; Love the videos, but I have watched 14:15 to 15:14 about 20 times and I still don't understand why you are cutting 3/4 plus 3/8 within the 3" of the end of the Main runner track. If my Tile is 23.75" X 23.75", woudl I not have to cut that main runner at the 3" or behind that at 5deg angle so that it sits on the wall angle to fit my 23.75 x 23.75 tile?

    Hey Jeff, I've been using your videos a lot to help me with finishing my basement and I'm finally almost done (working on the ceiling, of course). I wanted to know if you knew of a good US supplier for the Wall Angle Cover Caps you are using at the 9:00 mark. I only need 3 for my basement, but I can only find packages of 50 on amazon. Canadian Home Depot has packs of 2 listed on their site, but US Home depot does not have any at all. Every hardware store I've gone to does not have them and I'm flabbergasted because they seem so useful.
