6 years later in 2021 this is still BY FAR the best explanation of using a router as an extender both wired and wireless. Apple router or non Apple router the information is spot on and extremely easy to understand.
What you explained is exactly what I used to question and looking back I can’t believe how many people didn’t know, and/or still don’t know, the correct answer to using an extender properly and when/where to use one wired or wireless.
Had to come back for a refresher and I’m so glad I found this one again because I watched maybe 10 others before this and they all left me with the same simple question about if I need to make the names and passwords exactly the same or will that cause interfere with each other (Answered), forgot about the bandwidth too on what I would be boosting if I was too far away (while wireless), and reminding me of what can be a minor but annoying issue of doing it wired but placing them too close to each other, which can sometimes make your phone or device go a little crazy deciding which router to switch to if your in that sweet spot range between them both.
I believe the the newer routers with the new mesh systems eliminate this but don’t take my word for it. I’m still using my 7year old Asus RT87U gaming router and even older AirPort Extreme, both still kicking pretty good but probably on their way out, at least the AirPort Extreme is dying on me.
    Thanks again man

You just cleared up, in the first two minutes on roaming, what I've been pulling my hair out for years over, just give the new network the same name, etc. as the original network! I've been thinking all along that to extend the network you had to choose, well, extend the network. Thanks for using user language so we understand. Great video!!

One of the best explaination, need to understand more on the "Roaming" and "Bridging" setup... The most issue of gadgets is their poor manual that came along. In my Airport Utility, looking at each extreme can't fine the word "Roaming" unless mine is not Apple but Cider .. ;)

I ran into a problem because I had an ethernet cable connected to each express and I extended the network wirelessly. I believe I had loops going on which caused a problem so I removed the ethernet cable and all was OK in the sense I had signals however the signal was not great. I wired up the network with cat 6 when we built the house so now I will reset the express boxes and set them up with ethernet. I expect the signal will improve. I had not realized that I had to create a "roaming" network instead of extending it. I appreciate the video, it explained a lot and really helped. I'll let you know how it goes.

You nailed it buddy... the process you said is absolutely right. I have discovered this path after 40-50 experiments over a month to get a crystal clear no-dead zone in my entire 5000 sft with 10 units wired from wall as airport extreme bases every corner.
the service provider shows speed test as 400 MBPS, with airport I see 150MBPS
Thanks for confirming my process is flawless..
Hope others can follow the best practice, lot better than mesh networks..

My Airport Utility was different on my Mac Pro however I chose "Create a wireless network" under the "Wireless" tab of my two express devices and entered the details from my Airport Extreme. The router mode immediately changed to "Bridge Mode" (Network tab) and I connected ethernet cables to the remote express boxes and powered them off and back on. My extreme picked them up and I verified that they were in the right mode. I now get the max signal in the two areas where I have the express boxes. Problem solved. Many thanks.
NOTE: The network tab does not show up until you choose "Create a network" and enter the parameters.

Hi thank you so much. Been using an entire setup of 5 of these at home but the airport express are not giving me more than 100 mbps while my AirPort Extreme & Airport Time Capsules are giving over 200-300 mbps. Any recommendations on how to solve this ? The entire setup is wired with Cat 6 cables extended.

Good video. It would be helpful to discuss what the AirPort Utility will request. I am interested in boosting my existing wireless network signal (managed by my AirPort Time Capsule) to an Apple TV that is on the far side of my house, downstairs. The signal is relatively weak and there is too much buffering. I prefer to hardwire the Apple TV to a new AirPort Express via ethernet. Others suggest that when using the AirPort Utility I should have the AirPort Express should "join an existing network" vs "extend an existing network." I am confused about the difference. Which one would allow me to boost the wireless connection using an AirPort Express connected to an Apple TV?

Agree with the other comments. Super clear. Thanks. I do still have a dilemma. I have a 2009 AirPort Extreme (wide, flat) and a last (6th?) generation AirPort Extreme (tower). I bought the tower to extend the reach of the other extreme. I set them up - the base in an open upstairs loft and the tower down in a first floor bedroom. The signal suffered horribly. Unplugged the tower and - boom - better. Can I still utilize that 2009 router somehow to extend the reach? Possibly put it in a different spot? Perhaps I didn’t set the two Extremes up right in the Airport utility. Should one be a bridge? Etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Thx

So in the beginning you stated you connected your Apple Router to a modem. Now, My modem is also a netgear wifi modem, (I did not want but cable guy put it in anyways.) I connected my apple extreme router and it forced into (Off (bridge mode)). Do I change that or leave it in that setting?

Hi ... I saw your videos, pretty fantastic...!!! I'd try ask you a question... I'm going to buy an airport extreme.. I'll config it like an extended wireless connection, than I would use it in the second floor of my house by wi-fi bridging with my router. Now the question is..: Can use connect to my airport extreme another pc via an ethernet cable and surf internet.. In my airport no direct connection with ETH cable will be present. So. extend my home connection by wi-fi with airport, than connect a pc to airport with a ethernet cable and try to surf the web... Is to possible???

Because my printer is not wireless compatible, I bought 2 Airport Express devices...one that his hard wired to the modem upstairs and used as the "Master", and the 2nd AE device is downstairs by my printer that is used as the "extender" so that I can print from the Network wirelessly. I got it to work and print wirelessly once, but I cannot figure out why I canʻt print wirelessly anymore. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you think extending a network is needed for an AT&T Gigapower connection?

    • @abtelectronics
      @abtelectronics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Justin. The strength of the network isn't as much of a factor as the strength of your router and what your home layout is like. So Gigapower will be ultrafast when it comes into your house, but your router and the amount of walls and floors in your home will decide how good your in-home wireless network is.

Ok. I have a problem. I have an Apple Airport Extreme, Airport Express and Time Capsule. Airport Extreme rules as the main router connected to the Internet. Until Time Capsule extends the network, everything is perfect. It connects as 802.11N and as I checked, a 2GB file can be transferred in 2 minutes to an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme in the other room. As soon as I replace Time Capsule with Airport Express, or I add it to the network, the performance of the network decreases. It connects via 802.11G and I cannot change it to N. The same 2GB file transfers in more than 20 minutes and WiFi explorer shows huge noise in the network. This happens even if I use the Time Capsule as main and the Express one as the Extender. Any suggestion?

This is partially outdated as of late 2017. This is the updated CAT5 cable option: Do a hard reset on both your airport extreme and express. (units will light-up amber) Keep the airport express unit disconnected for now. Open up the airport extreme settings in your airport utility by double-clicking on the airport extreme icon and selecting 'edit' from the pop-up menu. Create a new network (WPA2 is always your safest bet). Name and password (or re-enter your old settings there if you prefer). Press 'update' and let the extreme unit re-boot until you have a solid green light (You should have internet access now). *If you haven't done this in a while you may have a red dot with a number next to the airport extreme icon which most likely means that you need to update your firmware. If that is so, update it and let the unit re-boot once again until you have a solid green light on the unit and also in your airport utility. NOW PLUG IN YOUR RESET AIRPORT EXPRESS unit. (you may want to close and re-open the airport utility. Click on the top left menu called 'Other wifi devices': if your express unit is successfully reset, it will appear there without a custom name but just the apple serial number. Select that. From there, a pop-up window simply told me that the express unit would be set up to extend the extreme unit. It all went automatically. Let the process run through - again you may have to update the EXPRESS unit's firmware if you haven't done so in a while but if not, then both units should appear connected and solid green in your Airport express utility. This is as of December 13, 2017 - i am running OS El Capitan 10.11.6
