The Blue Castle is my favorite of the stand alones as well.
I agree that Kilmeny of the Orchard felt similar in ways to A Girl of the Limberlost! I hadn't thought of it until you said it!
I so enjoy her books!! I am going to put in an order for Blue Castle and Tangled web. I hope you also do a Louisa Alcott reading challenge sometime, another writer I love😅😊.
Loved hearing your thoughts on the books! I still have to read the middle three you mentioned. The Blue Castle is 100% at the top!! It's going to take a lot for another L.M. Montgomery book to top that one for me.
Good Morning, Mitzi. I guess I am getting to know you pretty well. I knew what your favorite would be and what your okay book would be.
In defense of Jane of Lantern Hill, I think she went to visit her father with a low self-esteem. Her grandmother was not a nice grandmother. She constantly put Jane down and didn't want her to explore life or actually see what her talents were. Her father was more than happy to let her find joy in doing the cooking and cleaning.
Also, she she assumed her father was dead because that is what her grandmother wanted her to think.
The one I didn't like in the book was the mother. That lady needed to get some back bone and stand up to her own mother.
The Blue Castle is my favorite Montgomery and the only stand-alone I've read (and reread) so far. I'm hoping to join in and read Jane of Lantern Hill this month and I also have A Tangled Web waiting.
I just recently started reading Lucy Maud Montgomery last year I feel in love with her writing after reading Anne of green gables I am so glad I found your channel it’s a breath of fresh air ❤
I had a feeling Kilmeny of the Orchard would be in the last slot and The Blue Castle in the first. 😊 Kilmeny of the Orchard was a sweet romance. I read it last year and enjoyed it. I started reading Jane of Lantern Hill. I need to read the other three, so I hope you keep hosting the More Montgomery Challenge.
I haven’t read The Blue Castle so I added that to my TBR list.
That would be hard to rank those books for sure! Loved your thoughts on all of them. I am reading A Tangled Web right now, it’s definitely taking some time getting all the characters straight😉
Magic for Marigold will be my next read.
A Tangled Web sounds like the brilliant PG Wodehouse book The Code of the Woosters, which also revolves around a jug. I just started my second ever Montgomery book last night, Anne of Avonlea, I'm already loving being back at Green Gables. I've just bought The Blue Castle on kindle.
I am participating in the #moremontgomerychallenge and love it ❤
The Blue Castle is my favorite LM Montgomery book. I love Anne of Green Gables, but The Blue Castle is the best story.
I am going to read The Blue Castle and The Tangled Web this month for the More Montgomery Challenge
I think I will read The Blue Castle in the upcoming weeks
Oh, I do hope you'll get to it! I'd love to know your thoughts.
Hi Mitzi! I have read The Blue Castle and have been wondering what to read next - so thank you so much! I also loved The Blue Castle - it was wonderful, and I feel like it will also be top-ranked because I almost like it as much as AOGG! I feel like I've had a bit of "playground dizziness" when it comes to choosing the next Montgomery - because it's hard to decide! So this helps a lot! Have a wonderful day!
The Blue Castle is my favorite too. I'm due for a re-read. I enjoyed Kilmeny of the Orchard but there was a word that escapes me right now that they said about Kilmeny and that rubbed me the wrong way. I still would like to read Magic for Marigold and A Tangled Web. I can't wait to read Jane of Lantern Hill with the group this month.
I 💙🏰 👏🏽
The Blue Castle is everything!! love
❤❤❤my favorite by far
I actually also love Kilmeny of the orchard but the Tangled Web is my least favorite 😂
😂The Tangled Web is like watching a soap opera! 😂
Hi Mitzi...I was wondering if you ever read any historical fiction by Elswyth Thane? I really enjoyed these back in the day. I looked for them at the library and couldn't find them. I think they may be out of print. They were written in the 1960's. I loved them. There is a Williamsburg series (7 books) and a Yankee series. The Light Heart was probably the first one I read. Right now I am reading the first book in the cozy mystery Scottish bookshop series by Paige Shelton. Like it so far.
❤️📚📚❤️
The Blue Castle is so good! I have A Tangled Web, but haven't had a chance to read it yet. Maybe this month?? 😊
Yes!! This is the month for it!
You have me very intrigued to read "The Blue Castle." It's now on my Goodreads TBR! This book isn't a standalone, but "Among the Shadows: Tales from the Darker Side," is a collection of darker short stories by LM Montgomery that I absolutely loved.
I just read Jane of Lantern Hill and enjoyed it. The only other stand alone of LMM I've read is The Blue Castle, and I definitely enjoyed it more than Jane of Lantern Hill. I have thoughts on what you mentioned about the dad/daughter relationship but don't want to spoil it here 😂I want to get to the Tangled Web soon!
Yeah, I was trying not to say too much about Jane so I wouldn't spoil it- I should probably start putting in warnings so I can discuss these things!
I didn't care for Kilmenny. I didn't like the instalove and the racist nonsense (it felt like a plot prop rather than a realistic thing.
I LOVE Magic for Marigold. She's so much like I was as a kid. If you mashed her and Francie Nolan together, that would be me. Such a delightful story.
I haven't read Jane yet. I really need to and plan to this month.
I thought I hadn't read A TAngled Web, but I have! I need to reread!
The Blue Castle and Marigold are the ones I am having trouble deciding on those!
Yeah, I remember the instalove thing, too, and rolling my eyes at that. I did enjoy it for the fairytale tone, though, but I just don't feel it can compare with her other stand alones- they just have more substance.
