Bill Weaver and Maury Rosenberg both contributed so much to the successful missions of the SR-71. A great interview with many lessons learned.

This Guy!! 👍 I was 14 years old and watched your departure flight out of (then Norton AFB) show. I believe this was late 1986. Just want you to know, that was a sight and sound I’ll never forget! I never got to meet Mr. Weaver (he passed in 2021), but I’ve heard some stories from his boys. Lt. Col. Ed Yielding told me you fell I’ll the weekend of SR-71 Weekend at March Air Museum, hope your doing better and can make the next show 👍

Another Legend of our past who gave us a personal insight into those magnificent jets. A statue should be erected of this man.

Bill Weaver - Balls of Steel. Two weeks after his Blackbird tried to kill him, he took up a new Blackbird for its first flight. Amazing.

An other outstanding interview! Thank you for posting these videos so young punks like Myself can get an idea of what these great men did while we still have a few of them around. A truly great time in aviation history!

Nice reflection on the past. Well done and thanks for sharing
I’m a son of a Dutch airforce pilot..and Bill was flying his first jets when my dad was in training like bill did.
To add the Republic F84 series , it was was a good plane although not as a Fighter.
But in ground attack it was perfect like the ww2 P47.
The F84F had 67 .50’s and it served well. It could take a hit.
These republic jet models are designed in respect to that old P47.
If you look in to the history of the F84”s you will learn that it was successful.
My dad became test pilot of the F84’s when they underwent midlife refit.
He tolled me that going ballistic with a F84F it was possible and make a sonic boom.
Also the F84F was able to carry a “blue Boy” nuclear bomb and tosh it away in a Labs or Habs bomb run.
The mission was to fly very low and fast true the German country hills to bring a weapon past the Russian border.
At the target they would pop up in half loop and release the nuke so it will curve over the other way.
After release the pilot tried to steer back in between the hills to escape the blast.
    My dad alway said ... “ I wouldn’t do that in a F5 “
On the German F104 discussion they did lack the experience. The planes where fine.
The old ww2 fighter jocks where asked back to help out. In a lot of cases overconfident youngster where killing them selfs.
Later this issue got repetitive on the Dutch airforce and so again on the F16
But even flying the F84F during the 50’s the Germans en Dutch did lose planes like 2 a per 6 weeks.
    Most events where technical issues.
On the F104 license build planes .. the Fiat’s where the fastest because those where mostly hand build, less production machinery was available. The planes had the smoothest skins.

macnamara not only cancelled the YF - when the SR was done being built he ordered all the tooling destroyed.
Unstarts: An unstart is when the normal shock is expelled from the inlet. To get the engine to work the air has to be slowed before it hits the compressor. the inlet cone is positioned to put a shock wave just inside the lip of the nacelle, and the shock is reflected back and forth, with the air slowing at each reflection. when the air is past the throat (narrowest point) it goes through a normal shock to subsonic and then through the expanding section of the inlet slowing down as it goes to the engine. If the normal shock gets forward of the throat it causes an unstable situation (mass continuity stuff) and the normal shock immediately jumps outside the inlet. Now the inlet is producing massive drag, the engine is getting a lot less air. The engine has to be immediately de-riched or it will over temp (jet engines run with excess air so as to not melt) . And the inlet needs to be cycled to again "swallow" the shock. So the bypasses are all opened and the cone goes forward, you res-establish supersonic flow through the throat. and then it can be stabilized again. SR pilots hate unstarts because it slams you around.

I thought he was doing it on purpose for 90% of the video. Now I think maybe he just really nerds out on this stuff and they're talking like they're on the inside of an inside joke. Like when the new guy comes in and the jokes get so deep nobody gets it, but especially not the new guy. Then again it may have been on purpose and he's just a dick

Anyone else get the feeling the guy beside Weaver is there to make sure he doesn't reveal too much? Like the buddy might STILL be C.I.A? Lol, I can't be the only one getting this impression.
