- An exposé of dings and tone analysis (Spoilers up through season 2, episode 2)
Sorry for the low resolution. I created this for Reddit, and I don't particularly feel like re-editting with higher res assets.
See the original reddit post here: / what_is_the_elevator_t...
In the reintegration scene you can see the salt vibration pattern thingy and it switches between the two patterns which both match the same frequencies of those two elevator notes!
Woahhh I definitely have to go back and check that out now! Very interesting
Can you tell me how you verified this? I found a video going through a range of frequency patterns using sand, and the patterns didn’t seem to line up with G and C ♯
I would also love to know how to verify this, as I’ve bad a similar experience to @erinngeyougladididntsaybanana
Can you go into more detail on that please?
i tried to post a link but i think youtube doesn't like people posting links in comments argh
Great analysis. As a reward, you've earned an exclusive pineapple bobbing experience.
i'm sure they would prefer a waffle party 🎉 👿
As a reward, how about giving this channel a sub? 54 subscribers?! Lots of editing in this video and I hadn't seen the elevator tones mentioned elsewhere...
the whole bobbing for apples gets another meaning now 😂
Please hear each ding equally
Haha! 😂😂😂
Very good
-10 points!😊
Let's try again 🗿
thank you. A handshake is available uppon request.
Thank you, May I Have a Milkshake Please?
the little details in this show are insane
BROOO YOU PREDICTED WHAT HAPPENED 2 EPISODES LATER HOLY SHIT
It's interesting to note that G an C# are a tritone apart, meaning it's the greatest distance between one another, emphasising that a severed person is far from the same as their "natural" person. Great attention for detail. Bb is a minor third (invokes sadness), while B is a major third (happy) in relation to G. Indicating she's not the same. I love this show so much.
Um ackshually 🤓 seeing as we're going down from G to Bb, this means the interval is a major 6th rather than a minor 3rd. Same goes for G to B being a minor 6th rather than a major 3rd. That's why I don't believe these intervals to have any greater meaning other than being consistently used for the same situation, or that their relation is not tied to their major-minor relation.
I do however agree with your analysis of the tritone (G to C#). It's the most dissonant interval we have and it's a strong tool to indicate something is "wrong", that things don't line up. Cool analysis overall!
@dennishendriks1094 ah yes, of course! I didn’t consider it was a downward move, making it a 6th, that makes it even better! Thanks!
Stop the conspiracy theories BS 😂
But doesn't it depend on the chord? B-D-F is B minor diminished, but Bb-D-F is Bb major
@ no, we’re talking intervals and the relation, not harmony ;)
You was right my guy wow
After watching the latest episode this theory was right!!!
After seeing this video, I watched the scene where Ricken is trying to brush off Gemma and Mark’s discussion about what innie Mark meant by “she’s alive”. As he uncorks the wine bottle, it plays a perfect F#, and it sounds really similar to the elevator bell.
I wonder if we’ll hear an F# if they start altering or erasing an innie’s memory…
it's not a piano note (just a sound), so it doesn't fit the "rule" created here.
Wow, didn’t expect to see you on this video
pixlriffs ?!?!?!?
Ah, good catch man
Noice! Halllo to fellow musos.
Nice, confirms its the outie Helena and not inny Helly now on the severed floor. RIP Helly R (maybe)
I agree with you, she lies about of the experience in time out. its too ovbious
@@ALEXUNARGENTINOMEXICO To be absolutely fair, Helly R has a perfectly good reason to not want to reveal that she is Helena Eagan (attraction to Mark, trust of the MDR team, personal disgust with Helena). However, I think her attitude in S2E3 is really suspicious, because she only ever follows Mark's lead and only ever speaks after he does, despite Helly having been really proactive before. Helly would not let herself be led around like that, she'd be much more confident and outspoken than that.
it doesnt lol
I also found pretty suspicious that Helena watched a lot of Helly R footage, seems like she was studying her innie to act like her.
Great news
What an absolute madlad
For this great analysis a handshake is available on request
you got it right based on episode 4
The answer has been made, we’re always right!
Another fun fact:
Every elevator trip down is timed to be exactly 20 seconds. The only exception is “Helly” who makes the same trip in only 17 seconds.
Why do you think that is? They speed it up for her because she’s more valuable?
@@benbowland perhaps she came from a different floor to the others

This is the internet I love. Thank you.
the C# being flipped at 0:46 is such a nice little detail
This reminded me of the good ol' days of True Detective Season 1 and later seasons of Breaking Bad. Just being able to talk about and theorize what could come next with co-workers every week. Those days are long past with remote work but it's great that a community can still flourish around a show. Terrific analysis and you ultimately were spot on a couple weeks later!
this is beautiful genuinely a perfect show
saw this on reddit and was mind blown by the details. this show is truly something
Something else interesting about that G to C# interval at the beginning is that it’s a tritone. Tritons were previously referred to as the devil’s interval because of how unsettling it sounds and was banned from being played in churches. Very interesting that the devil’s interval plays when entering MDR floor.
Yes it is a tritone. But no, the banning from the church thing is a myth. Look through every time period of church music not a single one is void of tritones unless you go back to ancient chants.
while it may be a myth, the common association with the interval and the devil still could've inspired this decision. the story is partly inspired by a play called "no exit" which depicts several characters trapped together in the afterlife. playing the "devil's interval" as they descend to their personal hell seems fitting.
God I love this fandom
The first three notes of the Severance Opening Theme's melody are B, Bb and G. It's hard to believe that it's a coincidence.
A C# appears once and only once in the melody during the entire Opening Theme. It doesn't really fit the scale(s) used but it does fit the theme.
i have no clue what this show is about, but i appreciate that you flipped the C# to match the cut at 0:45
Best show I’ve ever seen. Treat yourself…
Give it a watch and you’ll be sucked in for quite some time 😂
Watch severance youll really love it!!
Not sure if the best show ever. But really good and worth watching.
@ Spoken like someone who does crossword puzzles and browses social media while watching.
What’s better?
You deserve some coffee cosies.
Literally right now.
I was just about to go to bed, and now I am staying up all night to re-watch
I've heard many people use the elevator dings as proof of Helly not being Helly. And I completely agree with them.
and you were right
God bless everyone taking the time to discover this stuff, it makes the show even more enjoyable.
Ok i didn't buy the helena spy theory until this video. Very convincing! Love all the hints in these details
SPOILERS:
YOU WERE RIGHT
I CANT DISTINGUISH NOTES FOR SHIT, I NEED A SIDE-BY-SIDE VIDEO WITH THE KEYS GOING BLUE
Thanks for putting this on youtube
the notes are the frequencies used to align their brainwaves. the thing Reghabi was using on him was showing the freq. it corrosponds to the same as the notes the elevator plays.
Give this man a pineapple!!
Thanks! what a great analysis for a great show.
Great analysis. I will keep my eyes and now my ears open for more clues
The clones hypothesis also mirrors the process of basically creating a clone of yourself by undergoing the severance process.
A separate version of you that is you but a blank slate.
Nice spots, definitely a piece of the puzzle
Fantastic editing in this video.
Excellent work. I love the show and the redditors like you.
Omg! I didn’t notice it before but god that is such a good little detail. Helly might actually be Helena pretending to be Helly… that would be such a big twist!
That was my very first thought when she lied about her outie. But I had actually convinced myself back that the writers were bluffing. Now though, it seems for real.
Incredible work. Waffle party for you
He predict the Ep 4
No f-cking WAY!!!
an interesting note is the single B natural in season 1 during helly’s attempted hanging fits rightttt in tune with the soundtrack at that moment. While the other instances of B natural are attention grabbing, I wonder if in the hanging scene they changed the tone because the normal B flat would be distractingly dissonant with the backing soundtrack.
(that said, the soundtrack is very much malleable no? they could, relatively easily, just revise the score if it was off to fit their usual elevator tone…)
I've seen the recent episodes but shout out for your editing mid clip to warn people just in case. Not all heroes wear capes, what a legend.
One more night till S2E3, WE CAN DO IT.
It’s out now, it’s always released Thursday night 9 EST
@@AbigailButcher 🙏🙏🙏logging off the internet now lmao. I swear I looked it up and it still said Friday's but I had heard from fans that watched the S2 premier that was originally aired on a Thurs, but guess I'll have to watch AppleTV.
Haha funny, my gf was trying to meetup before she leaves on a trip...hey babe sorry a new Severance dropped. Appreciate you!
Ben Stiller said he added as much detail into this show as possible, out of respect for the intelligence of the audience
Absolutely, before watching this vid i already suspected it was Helena down there, not Helly. Now, I’m almost sure of it. Especially because Helena wants to make sure the MDR team finishes their quota ASAP, so she probably needs them to be on the line.
Also, when she descends for the first time after the 5 month skip, she seemsd surprised by the hug Mark gave her, and tried to adjust quickly. That’d be weird for Helly R., since her last moment awake was spent kissing him - so a tight hug wouldn’t be something to take her by surprise.
Anyway, really great vid!!!
Her last moment awake was falling down after the speech. But she still acted too unusual by many clues.
I think it's conceivable that Helena was originally offered the choice of joining MDR as a severed or non-severed employee. I also think in Season 2, Helena finally accepted that she can't trust her innie to do the job, and god knows she tried to force Helly into it. Not only did Helly try to kill Helena, but she is independent and incorrigible.
We see a few instances in Season 1 that demonstrates outies 'using' innies to avoid experiencing unpleasant/scary tasks such as pregnancy. In the first season, I believe Helena went along with Project Helly for two reasons:
1) She is an indoctrinated Eagan who is fanatical about the mission. Severance is just another step for a true believer
2) She's a nepo baby who's likely been given her job by birthright; Helena doesn't know the meaning of hard work as a corporate drone, nor does she want to. Working in MDR for years on end would involve 8 hour days of hard graft in a sterile, grating office environment. Easier to just send in her innie and wash her hands of it.
Ultimately we have this weird tension -- it looks like Helena has to abandon severance to get the job done. But if severance is so uniformly great and she's such a zealot, wouldn't that be a really hard choice to swallow? That's like the CEO's daughter abandoning the core mission, which is a blow in itself. That's surely going to put her off balance.
Wild speculation: Helena will fall for Mark, but Mark won't reciprocate because Helena is not Helly. Helena re-integrates with Helly to win Mark over.
Excellent editing 👀
You genius.
Fantastic work, would never have caught any of this!
Thanks for the spoiler warning!
Wow, thank you for this!!
Regarding Helena, watch 2x4
Amazing!
Thanks for making this Severance video. Very interesting.
Amazing pick up
Wow, this is a crazy notice
That’s a good breakdown.. they also didn’t show if Helly was going up or down 🤔
Given to the fanatical attention to details this show puts in, the holy grail is to find mistakes such as the usual crew in the shot and continuity errors.
Incidentally, someone said to me that the show goes so far as using the lengths of each episode as clues. I think he's has gone from fanatic to obsessive.
Wow. This is really good
Damn, good catch! And i'm sure you now realize what this was trying to tell us.
SPOILERS:
I wish I would've seen this a couple weeks ago, as I already had a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't Helly, and was actually Helene coming to the severed floor (after OTC).
Nice find!
NOO I feel like this confirms the suspicions that it’s really Helena going to the severed floor but I don’t want it to be!!
This is a great video
Agreed on all counts. Had suspicions from the narrative itself, but this underscores them nicely.
Great analysis, i was thinking the same thing and in my mind this confirms it. I hope you're right!!!
i can't understand the people who dislikes this video . great job
I'm blown away
Great work
nice finding
Wow, good work.
! Ding ¡
this is CRAZY
My thought is Helly R this season is not the severed version if her but rather her actual self.
Great work! Thank you!
Awesome! Even if this is the only video you make, this is a valuable contribution to the Severance fan family.
This is the most convincing evidence that it's Helena
YES!!! Let's unpack this!
So it's a indicative of an error in severing during the transportation process from outie to innie.
my mind blew
Brilliant work! Liked & subbed muso. ❤
That blew my mind
It was pretty obvious during the non-kissing scene between her and Mark, but glad to see this type of confirmation.
Im a bit of a Ding expert myself
Wow - this is highly interesting!!!!!
Love it!
Excellent!!!!
What do we make of Irving's ding at the start of episode 4 being a G (beginning of transition) rather than a C# (end of transition)?
And why is Helly running when she gets out ?? She is in no rush when she gets in … ‘edit’ sorry yeah she was being pushed to stop her talking outside… sorry….
That proves that she is "Innie", but by many other clues she is "outie" .
Your theory was proven to be correct great job 👏 👍
Maybe B indicates that someone non-transitioning (or somehow special like Helly, or worker from outside of severed floor like she is) uses the elevator
yup i knew it helena is the impostor on s2
I KNEW IT!!!
Olha isso @mikannn 🤯🤯🤯 Os detalhes dessa série são insanos!!!!
iirc, there’s no first ding for Hell(y|ena) when getting in the elevator in either ep. 2 or 3.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cliCKING awAYYY! i HAVEN't SEEn season 2 yEtTTTTTTT
super interesting and spoiler!!! it was showing it wasnt innie helly r but helena eagan pretending u were spot on ha
My hypothesis: the B natural indicates Helena, rather than Helly. For Helly’s attempted hanging, this would still be consistent - Milchik states that “Helly was her outie when she went into hospital” (or something along those lines) when telling Mark to be kind to her. She came out of the elevator after her attempted hanging still panicked and freaking out, so I don’t think she returned to innie state after coming back down when she hung herself (maybe because the keycard wasn’t inserted?). I think we may see this continue through the season, and it might be a consistent tell for eagle-eared viewers.
I still think Helly in ep 1 of s2 is still Helly but in ep 3 she might be Helena
