    I just purchased two of the 2022 Adventure models for my wife and I. We're both street bike riders (VTX's) and an original CBR1000F. We wanted to work out way into the adventure world at a moderate pace. We're both at the 60 year stages of our lives. Health, still athletic... and so on.

    My favorite video on the gen 3 so far. I am borrowing Jesse's bike that he just got from you guys, doing a few initial videos before my press bike arrives. Pulling it apart with Eagle Mike this weekend, will report back on several areas. Overall, I am super happy the KLR lives on, we need an affordable ADV and this is the only one! And we don't want the zip tie companies to go out of business.

    It would be nice to be able to get EFI on the Gen 2 KLR.
    For those that think the lack of better doohickey spring is a deal breaker, it's not going to change until some of you sacrifice your bike to prove to Kawasaki that it's less expensive to improve the spring.
    When I bought my '08 model in December '07, everyone told me about all of the stuff I needed to do. Some of it I've done, but I didn't reroute my wiring harness... everyone was doing it. I decided to just let mine be the sacrificial lamb to get it repaired under warranty. It did eventually catch fire on my ride to work one day, but I got the power turned off in time to keep the damage low. Kawasaki did do the full repair under warranty, and I think the bill to Kawasaki was somewhere around $2k. Shortly after that, they issued the recall for the wiring harness. You're welcome.
    Someone will need to do that for the doohickey spring. And if the spring doesn't break before the warranty expires, then Kawasaki has made the spring as strong as it needs to be. The world is run by accountants, and it's just one of those things KLR owners will have to deal with.
    ps. I still have that KLR. :)

    • @BigRockMoto
      @BigRockMoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Laura you probably don't remember but we rode together st a KLR rally in Utah many years ago. Your point is spot on. I am borrowing a Gen 3 for testing from Jesse before my press bike arrives, and we are pulling it apart at Eagle Mike's this weekend. Many weaknesses remain. However I think they made improvements that benefit the average klr rider while keeping the price the same, a big victory.

    • @vancel35
      @vancel35 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BigRockMoto Are those rallys still happening? I haven't been in years. My KLR is different from the last time you saw it. I laid it down and had to rebuild it several years ago, so I upgraded a lot of the good components... partly why I have no plans of getting rid of it. :)

      @joshprows5305 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reebull8557 So we've been doing some more research on this as more resources are becoming available. It does look like it's a new part number in the Kawasaki schematics, but there's no evidence yet of if that means it's better or not. We're hoping that it is! However we still prefer the benefits of the torsion spring design, so will probably do the upgrade regardless!

    On my 22, the squeaky fairing noise, which didn't appear until around 4k miles, was simply the fairing gently rubbing against the tank. I took a piece of news paper, folded it up and placed it in between the fairing and tank, took it for a test ride and noise was gone. That's was temp fix and I finally placed some tape in that area. Only time vibrations are any concern, is on the highway and it was very tolerable. Very good bike for such a good price.

    I have the same model. The noise from the fairing you mentioned is not happening on mine. So it may just be something is loose. So far, after 700 miles, I really like the bike. It's the first "adventure" bike I have owned, and it took a little getting used to, but really it's all about practice and getting a feel for the bike. But I prefer it now that I'm used to it. It really cruises on the highway. I've heard people say it isn't good on the highway, but I have to disagree. It runs very well as a commuter on Florida highway speeds (70 to 80). It has some additional speed available, also. 80 isn't the top. But it really feels at home in the town traffic, say 50 to 60 mph. BTW, I'm 5'9" and I set the windscreen to the highest level and that really gave me that bubble of protection that got most of the wind off my face, which I wanted for highway travel.

  • @justinwaller7524

    I've owned three KLRs previously. The first one, a Gen 1, was destroyed in a hurricane and the second one was stolen. I traded the last one on something lighter for more off-road riding, the KLX300. But I miss my pig. It's way better for long range ADV riding, which is about half of what I used to do. The KLX is good for single track and in-town commuting. But it sucks for my 50 mile commute through the back roads. The KLR was better for that. I think I'll keep the KLX, but maybe still get another KLR650. I'll wait until there's aftermarket skid plates, crash bars, and luggage racks. I'm sure the Tusk stuff, once it's out, will be better than the OEM accessories. Also, I think I'd prefer the sand color to the camo. My KLX is camo. If I get another KLR, it's got to be different.
    To anyone with concerns about the doohickey, it's not that expensive to purchase and it's not too difficult to install. It's a morning or afternoon job. Just ask around on forums. There's probably someone close by with the tools and know-how that will be willing to help you out. If you have any concerns with it, that is.

I am hoping for something closer to the 1st gen klr 650; lighter and more narrow, yet still comfortable. If I get the 3rd gen, it sounds like it will go off road everywhere my 2nd gen can go. If you are riding on trails the first time you drop it and you pick it up it’s heavy. The second time it’s really really heavy to pick up. I am just branching out from Enduro to ADV so my apologies if this doesn't make any sense but why not just switch out the suspension like we all do on our enduro bikes? The KLR is relatively inexpensive which leaves allot of room in the budget to upgrade before you get into T7 territory which is another bike most say you want to redo the suspension on anyway. Kind of seems like a big single cylinder for adults. Sure it will never be my EC300i but I don't want to do long trips on my GasGas either as after 5-6hrs of riding you can feel it. Thanks

    I’m stoked Kawasaki resurrected the KLR650 from the dead. I thought I missed the boat in 2018 but looks like that’s not the case. I’ve never rode the KLR off-road just on the street on test rides. So, I’m going to the dealer to put $500 to get my bike on order. At the price of OEM luggage its almost like I bought the luggage and the bike was free. Deals are out there. Just purchased a gen1 with 1800 miles also in great shape for $1000. Have stacked up a lot of mileage on my gen2, probably going to sell it. Also my KLR 'for me' is too heavy for serious trail riding so I bought a 2010 KLX250s I found in an airplane hanger with 600 miles for $1850 and I love it. For rippin around on crappy city streets or messed up county roads or jumping curbs for short cuts the KLR is hard to beat though.

    I am about to pull the trigger on this bike in the basic model Sand. I am 57 and at 5'6" 180 lbs, fit. I am glad there is a lower profile seat I can order, as I can't touch the ground currently with both feet. The weight of the bike has me a little worried, because I feel like I will ride it about 50/50 dirt/road. I am an avid mountain biker and I ride aggressive on my mtn bike, so I feel like while I am just getting back into motorcycle riding - rode a lot as a kid, I feel like I will be able to adapt to the heavier bike. I also have done a ton of overlanding in Toyota 4x4s and have wanted to try the Adventure bike overlanding experience. So my question is how fun is this bike in the dirt beyond fire roads?

    I bought my 2008 Gen 2 KLR 650 in October of '07 for $4200. Still riding it, it's never failed to start, always runs well. I rejetted the carb, put a Super Trap muffler, taller windshield, and highway foot pegs on it, and did the doohickey back in '08. A couple years ago I set the seat into Seat Concepts for a really nice seat. Change the oil and filter at 500 miles then every 2000 miles. Battery every five years or so, air filter, and tires as needed. What Kawasaki should have done is made the 650 motor high performance like the KX450's motor, and added a 6th gear.
    Stupidly Kawasaki removed the Tach and the temperature gauge. Buy a used Gen 2, they're selling for around $3k. the new ones aren't worth the higher price.

That for the Higher MSRP Kawasaki should have made a Newer More Powerful Motor? Instead, Kawasaki is still using the 1980's motor, they just put EFI on it to make it run even Leaner to meet the cleaner EU5 air standards for they could keep selling the same old motor nowadays. This bike was created to be in the segment that kawasaki thought the versys 300x would sell to. My brother bought a versys 300 and sold it in less than a year. The versys 300 is a sportbike with a fairing. The KLR650 is a cheap ADV bike. Many people say "for $2k more, T7!" For many people, $2,000 is the difference between financing and cash.
    I am sad that the KLR lost the carb AND gained weight. My 650L and a buddy's DR650 saved the day on a recent trip when we had to donate the DR's battery to some KTMs and my several year old battery just quit.
    Fuel injection to pass EPA might be nice, but if Honda goes the same direction as the KLR, I hope they think it through a bit more.

    Checked a couple out at a dealer in Ridgeway CO last week. I think it's a smart design and puts the KLR into a cost niche that avoids head to head competition with the more expensive ADV options. However... you're on stuff I'd probably not consider the KLR a good option for in stock trim. Beyond the tires, skidplate, and rubber mounted stuff, we also felt that the guys on >400lb bikes were really at a disadvantage on the passes around Ouray, and the KLR would fall squarely into that later category (I was on a 701 enduro and that was about as much weight as I'd want to ride the harder trails on). Sure you can do that stuff on 500lb bikes... but it's a lot of work and it's not as much fun.

    I'm 60 years old and I've never put a leg over the KLR - until I attended the local Kawasaki demo day on December 3, 2021.
    I tested the Adventure model. Honestly, this isn't really a heavy bike. Or it gives the great illusion of not being one.
    I'm 6', 180# and the windscreen in low position felt fine. The mirrors were excellent. The seat, wow, so comfy. Rider position was relaxed with very little bend past 90 degree at the knee. Standing up was good. If you spend a lot of time standing I'd look into risers.
    Steering was effortless. I actually was oversteering at first because this bike likes to just lean right over, so I had to adjust a bit but that happened quickly.
    I also test rode the 650 Versus. I'd take the KLR over that any day of the week. Plus the fact that the top of the line Adventure model is cheaper than the Versus. No brainier.

Mostly at 55-70mph. 5k rpms is 70 mph spot on. That is pretty typical of single and twin cylinder engines in its class. These are not high performance engines. If you really plan on running a constant 6 freakin thousand rpm and 80mph on the hwy then oil consumption shouldnt alarm you. Thats 80% of the engines rpm capacity. If you ran your car or pickup at 80% of its rpm capacity at a constant rate you wouldnt have a car for long. I see no, zero, none oil consumption if i run 60-65mph or 4-4500 rpm. Maintenaince is always a top priority and i cant see why 200,000 miles+ would be an issue. Its beautiful in its extreme simple nature. Appreciate that or ya dont. Two things I like about the DR over the KLR is that you don't need shims to adjust your valves and the counterbalanacer is gear driven.

    It's a iconic brand for Kawasaki! So they haven't changed the genre much. That's good, It's on purpose did this way, Otherwise they have all the capability in the world to provide all gizmos & wizardry to appeal a lot. But then it will not be KLR . People can opt for Versys 650 for all that snob factor. I guess sometimes keeping things simple is good. I guess there's a huge market potential for something so simple and easy. Nice review.

    I haven’t heard this question answered yet!? Have they updated (installed) a thermostat bypass in the cooling circuit?

      My guess is that if they won’t spend a few cents more for a doohickey spring is probably not. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Very good review, seems like it is still a KLR and Kawasaki didn't ruin the KLR experience. Makes me wonder if Suzuki ever fuel injects the DR650/ DRZ400, would they fix the other niggles or keep as much of the 1996 technology to save on costs. Cheers

      And upgraded DRZ with a bit more punch really would keep selling. The other dual sports are either too expensive or underpowered 300s. That said the DRZ even as is still is best value.

    Would be nice if the weight could have been brought diwn... and no change on the dohicky? Must not be enough failures or warranty claims to prompt a factory improvement.

    Everyone needs to own a KLR in their lifetime. That way, when they have the economic means to afford a better bike, they will appreciate it all the more.
