I wanted to make my own version of "What is ASMR" for quite a while now. While editing, I realized that I had so much more to say and so little time to explain it. ASMR? What the heck is ASMR? I'm glad you asked. Wha- who are you? My name is Gibi, but everyone calls me Gibby. Oh, hi Gibby. Don't call me that. Uhp, sorry. ASMR is an acronym that stands for autonomous sensory meridian response. Oh, what? It doesn't tell you much. But essentially, it's a pleasant reaction to certain stimuli, and it's believed that ASMR is something people have or don't have. You mean like a condition? Am- Am I gonna die? No, not that sort of condition; more of a characteristic. An ability to feel a pleasant tingling sensation that can be triggered by acoustic or visual stimuli. That's ASMR. Some people describe it as a brain massage, but you can feel ASMR in different parts of your body such as your back or limbs. People experience ASMR in different ways, but almost always, it feels good. So it's... like a superpower? S- sure. Nice. ASMR videos are videos that are categorized to intentionally trigger that ASMR sensation in people. Intentionally? Yes. Many people's ASMR is triggered by unintentional stimuli, such as a teacher with a soft voice, getting your eyes checked at the doctor, or childhood friends drawing on your arm. There are many many different types of videos you'll find using the tag "ASMR". Some are very trigger heavy, focusing on making sounds, specifically to trigger your ASMR, others are more casual roleplays, or might just be whispering or soft talking. Some even borrow situations from third-party entertainment to create custom simulations. These are more for entertainment, but can trigger very strong ASMR in certain people. I find that I get ASMR most often during roleplays. I don't know why, I just do. Th- this is weird. TH-cam is weird. Fair point. At its core, ASMR is an extremely positive genre, aimed to aid others. So what exactly do these... tingles feel like? You could compare it to the feeling of this head massager *woosh*. Oh- oh. Give that a go. Oh. Yeah. But your voice doesn't make me feel that way. That's okay! It doesn't necessarily mean you can't enjoy or experience ASMR. A big part of the ASMR community is figuring out which triggers work for you. That includes whose voice or mannerisms end up triggering that ASMR. It isn't personal, there are literally hundreds of ASMRtists to choose from. ASMRtists? I didn't make it up. Mhm. As I was saying, hundreds to choose from. 3 buckle up 2 1. Wow. N-n-no, there's more, sh-sh-shh we're almost done. Oh. Whew, you weren't kidding. I never kid. Sometimes. So ASMR videos are used to give people ASMR. Most of the time. What do you mean most of the time? What else could ASMR even be used for? I am so glad you asked. You tricked me into asking tha- ASMR videos can be used for a lot of different things because of their inherently relaxing nature. Some of the common uses include: Sleep aid, daily relaxation, study aid/an alternative to music, calming down from anxiety, helping with depression or loneliness, simply entertainment! I've even gotten several messages from people telling me they use ASMR videos to practice eye contact if they have trouble with it. So people don't have to have ASMR to watch an ASMR video. Nope. Alright then. You can certainly enjoy an ASMR videos without getting ASMR tingles. There are countless videos and subgenres to explore to see what you like. But I can do ah entire video on that. Wait, that's a good idea- please. Sorry. ASMR is actually a massive genre. Yup. Then why haven't I heard about it? Intentional ASMR has just recently come into the public eye, even though its origins on TH-cam date back to over 8 years. Now that more and more people admit to watching ASMR and utilizing its benefits, you'll start to see celebrities doing ASMR, companies using it in advertising, and ASMR becoming a more socially acceptable and recognized genre. There's still a long way to go in terms of recognition, but thanks to the massive efforts of the original ASMR content creators, the community has grown into something that millions of people enjoy every day. I think the reason why Maria's voice is the most relaxing to me is because she speaks at volume level that's soft, but includes all the facets of her voice - the hum of soft speaking, the hiss of a whisper, and the breathiness. Her ASMR voice kind of checks all the boxes.

I appreciate these sorts of videos because MY first ASMR “trigger” experience was from a video that was actually making fun of the community that showcased a few examples.
I hope this introduces some more people to the community in a more friendly way!
Plus it was a good little preview of some popular ASMR artists.

The first time I experienced asmr was when my helper teacher took me into a different room and started reading me a book with a soft voice. I told her “your voice is nice” and she though it was a bit weird I didn’t realise it was asmr until I watched Frivi asmrs video. Then I started watching you Gibi !!!!!! And your role plays are life !
