  • Diving deeper into the Mini Cooper S R53 restoration. I'm having a rather large problem getting the gearbox off of the engine - it's stuck on there. I'm not sure if there are still bolts in the bell housing that I've missed, or maybe there's clutch damage.
Massive shoutout to Mod MINI for making his extraordinary tutorial videos on how to work on Mini's. I used this clutch change video to see me through this whole process: • 2002-06 MINI Cooper S ...
This whole series is inspired by The Savage Garage. Check out his video here: • Mondeo Mk4 Project Get...

I love how relatabe these videos are big TH-camrs tend to just seem to know the issues instantly and how to fix it but you are here watching videos to learn like the rest of us, using things the avg person would have like only jackstands instead of a lift

I honestly cannot believe that you took this on in a car parking bay..... you are either remarkably and commendably positive in all things - or simply require professional help. 🤣

Love your channel, but could you start numbering your activities.
The Mini series for instance and the Merc, just makes it easier to follow

Throttle body bracket! It's mentioned in the Mod Mini video .... I'm at the point of taking subframe off before doing the gearbox so I can do a clutch

That’s the Map sensor, the pipe goes down to the intake pipe to the supercharger. Common to be broken but are difficult to find new, it’s easier to get some fuel hose (so it doesn’t collapse) and cut the plastic pipe and fit a small, piece between the pipe and the map sensor nose. Two Allen bolts hold it in the bracket

Wow! Epic effort. My r52 has some subframe corrosion too. No noticeable holes yet but thinking about changing it out soon so will be good to see how that goes for you.

Thanks, Frazer. I was really surprised by how cheap I managed to pick up a replacement subframe for. So far, it doesn’t look like the subframe is gonna cause me much grief - fingers crossed!

Subframe - clean of rust by a wire brush on a wheel, weld the hole, protect with zinc paint and underbody spray. No need to buy another one. Welding by tacking one spot weld near the other is how anyone can weld without a problem or experience.

This is true but by the time he buys the welder, wire, gas, helmet, gloves etc and then has to learn to use it, and find a place to store it all it’s turned in to a big outlay, what for a 99 quid subframe.

Not watched to the end of the video yet, and I appreciate that this video is a year or so old, but spotted an issue with your rear bush mounts to the front control arm - they are the wrong ones! I only spotted this as I did these bushes on mine the other day and found the same issue. I think the cast metal bush carriers are from an R56 and not an R53!

My god, man! You really got balls deep into it, huh? Speaking about balls, taking a freaking engine out, in the english weather, in the parking spot of your house, takes balls heavier than that engine. Kudos to you, lad! The fact that you enjoyed it, was half the job, I think. 😊
