Mecano, which had won huge success in Spain, became the first Spanish band to reach the top spot in the French rankings. The song was certified gold in 1991 by SNEP, for a minimum of 250,000 copies sold, which is a very good result for a country like France.

Jose Cano (the guy with sort hair in the video) wrote this song in 1986 to be included in the band's fourth album (Entre el Cielo y el Suelo), but the record company thought the lyrics were too risky for Spain at that time and was left out of the album. Two years later Jose Cano demanded that it be included in the fifth album (Descanso Dominical) and it was an immediate success, even before it was released as a single.

This song is timeless and the records sales were so deserved. By the way, the band was often invited in various french tv shows to perform live or not this wonderful song. As you smartly said and noticed, this song is both deep and emotional.

80's + 90's, as this was from their hit 80's album-Descanso Dominical + was thier 4th single which was released as a single in early 1990!
I first heard it when the album was playing in many Spanish shopping centres, music shops, and my dad also bought this album and played it loads in our villa in the 80's when on holiday! and also saw them live on TV playing a few songs from the album.
As for the video-there was so much more views than video you saw, but got taken down by the Spanish record company a number of years back when it had 7 million views!

  • @comteqfr525

In french there is that expression : "Jeter la (première) pierre" (to throw the (first) stone at someone) which means to basically confront someone over something. ('First' when initiating the conflict)
The expression is based on the lapidation executions in ancient times.
So when the singer says "with my stones, they would build their fortress", she means if she "threw the stone" at them, so if she tried to run interference/oppose their relationship, they would only grow closer as they would lose some others.

On the other hand, the phrase "one thinks that this is not right, the other thinks, let's let it be" refers to the whispers between older people when they see these attitudes among young people and the phrase "let's let it be" is said as a way of resignation with something that is not you like.

    Hi Dereck !
As you already picked it up. This song came at a time where tolerance towards gay people wasn't at all the norm. (but you should know that, as you're only 3 years younger than I am).
In a matter of fact, even more than ten years later, I stumbled upon a Harry Potter fanfiction that used that song to mock two disliked characters. It kinda bothered me as I loved the tolerance message it brought. So it may have influenced me (as well as the beautiful romance between Willow and Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to make the heroïn of my own fanfic a bisexual, and give her a love story with one of her friends. I was kinda proud when someone wrote me that he (or she) has never liked gay couples in fictions, but that mine made him (her) change his (her) mind.

You had a lost in translation issue there. The singer is backing up the relationship. She says that if you don't like what you are seeing (two women in a relationship) you only have to go away because it's not their problem but yours. The singer is talking to you not to the girls in the relationship.
The original Spanish lyrics says: "con mis piedras ellas hacen su pared" (with my stones they build a wall) and the meaning is that they don't have to mind you, it's a warning to the people sorrounding them and our issues (the stones) with them can and would be used to protect themselves (a wall) of the rest of the world. In reality it's a biblical reference because before that sentence at the Spanish lyrics the singer sings: "no estoy por la labor de tirarles la primera piedra" (I'm not going to be the first one to throw a stone) "si equivoco la ocasión y las hallo labio a labio en el salón" (if by chance I encounter them kissing on the living room) and later she says: "si no gusto ya se que hay que hacer" (if I don't like I know what I have to do) "que con mis piedras ellas hacen su pared".
Mecano has another LGTBI related song, El fallo positivo that talks about the AIDS epidemic that affected a lot of the LGBTI comunity.
Mujer contra mujer (in Spanish woman against woman) was a hit in Spain, France and Spanish language countries. The song was released in 1988 and it's considerated one of the most important songs of the LGBTI comunity in Spanish.

Regarding the acceptance of homosexuality, or rather its non-acceptance since monotheistic religions dominated other religions, it should be noted that during antiquity it was perfectly tolerated, even encouraged (among the Spartans, the Romans in particular but also in some oriental civilizations) because it was felt that this made the warriors more united with each other. And that it significantly reduced the number of desertions because it channeled energies.
All that to say that's simply a question of culture to accept it or not.
Fortunately in France and in Europe, acceptance is gradually gaining ground. People are much less shocked than before about same-sex couples. However, it's not yet won.
I specify that I'm perfectly straight. However, I don't understand that it can bother people that LGBT people are in a relationship, even get married. In any case, me, that doesn't take anything away from me. I don't feel aggrieved or dispossessed of anything.
    ...Nobody's perfect! 😊

Yes this is an emotional and deep song with a strong and beautiful message. It is an hymn to love and to tolerance and one of the first songs about homosexuality which was a taboo at that time in Europe and particularly in France.

don't trust too much on youtube reproductions, think on all the albums they sold around the world back in the day. The reproductions that have been done along the years when there was no internet through those cassetes and cd players are countless. Was amazing to see how dynamic and determinated were to sing the song in french and other languages, I think they sang that one in Italian as well. Kinda reminds me to Laura Pausini singing in spanish her italian hits. Jose Maria Cano had so much talent writting the lyrics, let's not forget that that was written 35 ~ish years ago.
