We often let those things slide if others don't uphold to them, but it causes resentment in relation to the transgression and reference to ourselves. Think of how cordial it is to hold the door open for somebody, and how the polite response is "thank you". For some people, not getting that "thank you" is rude, as per *their* unspoken rules of society. The same if you enter a building, see someone closely behind you, and don't hold the door for them. That resentment builds up. And if not addressed on a constructive manner...most people snap.
