You're the dominant game in town when it comes to repair videos, as far as I know. There's an enormous audience for 10-20 minute informational videos and they don't care what the topic is. Case and point, I recognized a conspiracy earlier this year. I found all these great informational channels that were making 10 minutes videos about different things and sponsored by the same company... Hmm. Great content, I'm glad it exists, but they saw a demographic that people weren't so sure existed. Make 20 minutes videos. We'll grab food after work and watch the fuck out of them, Louis. You're above 400k, and if people can consume your content in less time consistently, you break 1,000,000 subs.
For those wondering, dead bug is a soldering technique of putting a chip upside down and soldering wires to its leads (although this one doesn't have any) because it looks like a dead bug with its legs in the air.
Macbook vs heat: heat wins. Macbook vs room temperature: room temperature wins. Macbook vs Coca-Cola: Coca-Cola wins. Macbook vs invisible speck of liquid: liquid wins. Macbook vs eBay battery: eBay battery wins. Macbook charger vs bad diode: bad diode wins. Victory record: 0/6, and that's not all of them!
that video shows me that my time in investing too learn in soldering skill is still not enough and i will strive too become better even more. good work Paul bringing that poor baby back to life :)
My first comment ever on your channel, but watch a lot and have to say that is very nice work. No wonder he works in your shop. Top job. And bless you too Louis.
Paul solders just like Louis. A ton of flux and extra solder. I solder the same way. Because it works. Edit: But I gotta mention that Paul's hands are way steadier than Louis', and mine.
WOW, it took me about 2 and a half minutes into the video before I realized what Paul was doing (I'm rather inebriated), that's fucking beautiful. Louis, Paul is going to show you up by doing these amazing board repairs that you obviously for good reason never bother to even attempt anymore because of your successful business. Luckily you still have a Paul, so it doesn't matter.
FYI, Louis often acknowledges Pauls masterful soldering skills, and admits his own are rather poor. His own lack of skill in microsoldering is due to a physical condition, which he doesn't like to talk about. Therefore, the justification you gave is invalid.
"FYI," it was a joke. I'm really getting tired of inane responses to light-hearted comments. Your "jokes" are obviously not as funny as you seem to think, then! Perhaps it is your "light-hearted comments" that are inane?
I know nothings about computer and I have no idea what I am watching but I know that this looks gooood👍🏽 can't imagine how hard would it be to work on something that small every day👏🏽
My last three phones have all been Samsung Galaxy's and my latest is a Samsung Note 8. Before that I've had anything and everything since mobile phones were invented, except for any Apple products, as I've never liked anything Apple. I still have my old AT&T over the shoulder phone from 1987! I think it should be in a museum...:). I have never had an issue with any of the Samsung phones and the Galaxy Note 8 is the best damn phone I have ever had. It's amazingly good! I use it often instead of my laptop. Fantastic screen. I don't even know how you could possibly improve on it....
Now we need to see some next level board skills, upgrade the GPU and/or CPU on a Macbook that has them soldered on ;) ROM flashing, BIOS editing and some mad electronics skills, could be a fun project for a challenge.
F...ing hell, This isn't soldering, this is electronic microsurgery! I mean check out the enormous size of the cu tip compared to soldering tip, pads and wires!
the "green stuff"is UV curable glue to keep the isolated copper wires fixed in the same location. The purple light is the UV light. By heating up the wire ends while soldering he removes the isolation locally.
The green stuff is there to make sure the wires do not move if they throw the machine off a balcony: store.rossmanngroup.com/index.php/ab13-uvh900-10ml.html The wire is insulated magnet wire. That stuff is red, I use the beige stuff now, but same idea. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L5IUCYA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rossmanngroup-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00L5IUCYA&linkId=d0ff065e3dddf1a82ec4e6895fdb2f89
Louis, how long would you expect a repair like this to last? Is this a "baby it for a year" kind of thing? Or "back your crap up and buy a new one in a month"? Not knocking the work, just currious how much crap and abuse she can take.
As long as the components/wires are held down well, which in this case it is thanks to the solder mask/UV glue, it should last a good while as long as it isn't dropped too often or gets water damaged.
You have to ask Paul why he uses it, but here's a few reasons why I would use it, first its super cheap at about $2 for a 10ml tube and non-conductive, you won't know for sure until you try it that some other glue isn't conductive and even just a slight conductance can potentially cause havoc on a circuit, here's one example if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/dftkoD7LG0A/w-d-xo.html (you can skip to 10:20 if you just want to see the failure). Although that said, some solder masks are made from epoxy and you can read a bit more about why its used here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solder_mask
Is the green "goo" added to isolate the wires from each other where they touch? It looks like some wires are still crossing and touching -- or does that not matter at all?
The components you sell on your web store are very overpriced. The 330uF kernel panic capacitor for example can be bought for a fraction of the price from Digikey. However, for people buying components in small volume it may be more cost effective to purchase from your store. I would recommend spending a bit more and getting some other components from Digikey (or mouser etc) to get over the free shipping limit as you will save yourself a lot of money in the long run.
Does Louis ever fix anything that isn’t a Mac? Or does ever Mac user send their broken stuff to Louis. I keep imagining a mountain of broken macs in Louis’ shop that he has to work through...
Yeah if a Cheap POS $500 Laptop breaks you buy a new Laptop, if your $2300 MacBook breaks you pay Louis $700 to do some component level logic board repairs. No one going to spend $700 to fix a Windows Laptop as for the money you can buy a new one. $700 is not even half the value of a Mac
What is that chip? Also this is amazing, I recently had to do some fine pitched stuff and it was pretty hard for me. It was much courser that this appeared to be though.
I always wonder: Do you tell your customers if (based on how bad the caused damage is) that they brought there device to a complete idiot before coming to your or ever show them the damage? Is trying to educating customers a bad idea? I am nowhere close to a similar business so I have no idea what would be a good measure buti'd be interested to know.
I would normally ask why this had happened but judging from this, it was possibly a botched job, an in competent apple iDiot, or both at the same time.
What is the copper color material on the wires? I suppose it does not cary a signal and you need to melt it to silver color to work ? I could you this, what should I type when looking for it?
The wire is insulated magnet wire. You can't see it, but the wire has some kind of insulation lacquer which is transparent. The lacquer melts at the solder point.

Random? That would make me subscribe.

dead bug is also the name of my new band
is it still a Mac if it has some jumper wires?
No, jumper wires are a distinctly PC trait.
not so much know what you are doing, more so able to pay attention and be careful.
counting to 8 is definitely higher education in 2018
Macbook vs heat: heat wins.

Correction: Macbook vs anything: Apple wins if you take it to an Apple store for repair.
Macbook vs Yamcha: They both die.
Andre Gon I think that's the only battle Yamcha might win.
Macbook vs its own fuse: fuse wins
Ben Snow LOL even the fuse doesn't think the Macbook is worth saving.
Further evidence that Paul can fix literally anything.
that video shows me that my time in investing too learn in soldering skill is still not enough and i will strive too become better even more.
good work Paul bringing that poor baby back to life :)
A Macbook can be saved but the real question is : can Apple be saved????
Like a ford, you can work on it, but you can't really fix it.
Nope
Of course! Just need to resurrect Steve Jobs.
Vlad Maverick Do you know any Satanic rituals to do so?
Yes , apple needs to be around otherwise Google will have monopoly in the phone market.
Loved the smart move to flip solder the chip, i'm impressed.
Thanks you for sharing such delightful jumper wire routing and repair!
Kudo!
My first comment ever on your channel, but watch a lot and have to say that is very nice work. No wonder he works in your shop. Top job. And bless you too Louis.
nice work Paul 👍
Love the guest appearance! Hope to see the whole shop someday
Watch Linus video, he did came by to Louis shop in the past
Louis, your team literally got into that boards ass, literally. It almost felt wrong but you did it right. Ayeeeee. Great work you guys do.
Paul solders just like Louis. A ton of flux and extra solder.
I solder the same way. Because it works.
Edit: But I gotta mention that Paul's hands are way steadier than Louis', and mine.
what an outstanding amount of patience to fix that board!
I personally love how components soldered deadbug style look.
Be-eeee-uuu-tiful! Paul is indeed a repair artist. Definitely a way of working I will keep in mind :)
Best electronics repair porn on the tube.
Fantastic stuff and amazing video. Thank you Louis for sharing this with us.

No, I'm pretty sure that *you* replied to *me* .
However much Paul got paid for this repair, it wasnt enough.
Paul is an absolute monster. What precision, my god.
you've done a good job!
I know nothings about computer and I have no idea what I am watching but I know that this looks gooood👍🏽
can't imagine how hard would it be to work on something that small every day👏🏽
Awesome work Paul!
Now THAT is a repair! Nice work Paul :D
Amazing work, Paul. Thanx for sharing :)
You might be able to collect copper tracks from destroyed boards and use them to repair the track.
As a long time subscriber and frequent viewer the damaged wasn't that severe.
But there's no denying that he's got skills.
Impressive repair! I wish my hands were that steady.
A lot of respect for Paul!
The macbook was asking for it.

Great job, keep up the good work 👍
the beeping in the back ground make it sound like surgical room.
Yeiih, a Dead Bug style repair!! My favorite :D
Restoring the word genius to it's rightful meaning.
This really is a clever repair. This guy clearly enjoys his job and uses his noggin.
this thing is a work of art.
Now we need to see some next level board skills, upgrade the GPU and/or CPU on a Macbook that has them soldered on ;)
ROM flashing, BIOS editing and some mad electronics skills, could be a fun project for a challenge.
Woo! Can't wait to see you with Linus again!

*Paul S* the *S* stands for _Skill_
That looked next level.
Waiting for that imac collab
Lol the one salty downvote is probably an apple employee.
for a moment since the video started , i thought louis has gone bald
Board reconstruction, you should charge like a plastic surgeon!
He does.
The real hero.
I concur with Paul's initial assessment, "Fuck you, to whoever did this." Hoooly shit. wow.
so many jumper wires. anyway Nice work Paul for resurrecting that macbook
This is art.
At least he saved it.
This would have been great if we had in real time Louis commentary, like in a sports-ball game :D
The overlapping copper concerned me a bit but owell it works.
that wire is insulated magnet wire, used in making motors and speakers.
Are we certain that mac boards don't WANT to die? They are really beginning to remind me of a screamapillar. lol
Open your asmr channel with only microscope view chip replacing/fixing sounds. It's pretty relaxing.
Looks like someone took the "chisel" in chisel-tip solder point literally.
What a beautiful repair
that board looks like it has been soaked through as if it's been underwater for a year or two!
Can I ask, how are all those new jumper lines, not shorting to one another? They look like straight up copper. Are they insulated?
Insulated magnet wire.
I was wondered the same thing, is the green stuff to hold them in place so they DON't short?
it's magnet wire (the stuff they use to wind motor's and transformers) so yes it is insulated
the "green stuff"is UV curable glue to keep the isolated copper wires fixed in the same location. The purple light is the UV light. By heating up the wire ends while soldering he removes the isolation locally.
The green stuff is there to make sure the wires do not move if they throw the machine off a balcony: store.rossmanngroup.com/index.php/ab13-uvh900-10ml.html

Nice repair of a toasted board! Who wreaked that havoc?
Giving Louis a run for his money!!!
nice work!!!

Not knocking the work, just currious how much crap and abuse she can take.
til death do us part
Best to pre plan the funeral ASAP then.
As long as the components/wires are held down well, which in this case it is thanks to the solder mask/UV glue, it should last a good while as long as it isn't dropped too often or gets water damaged.
But why use solder mask to hold them down? Why not epoxy? Or some UV resin?

Well that was pretty fucking ninja.
The birth of a PC... magic :-)
Louis, you got a haircut!
I have a macbook pro early 2015 13 inch, fans don't even spin till it hits like 60-70 Celsius lol
Yeah Paul is definitely better at this than Louis 😂
THATS!! how ya do it!
Nice work! What's the green stuff with UV light? is it like a glue or something?
Hey Louis, I'm curious, what is the liquid that is poured on the board? Isopropyl alcohol?
Is the green "goo" added to isolate the wires from each other where they touch? It looks like some wires are still crossing and touching -- or does that not matter at all?

you've misspelled 'price'
minj4ever exactly my thought. Price =/= value.
"$700 is not even half the value of a Mac" Yes it is, it just costs 3 times more.
You saved him! :-)
uv glue is best invention ever.
Your fixes are crazy for macs but I am going to keep my thinkpad an built pc been through too many macbook airs to buy apple again.
Is the green stuff some kind of wire insulator?
What is that chip?
Also this is amazing, I recently had to do some fine pitched stuff and it was pretty hard for me. It was much courser that this appeared to be though.
That bug is dead....
So so Beautiful! 🙌
Louis, do you allow fans/visitors to visit the shop? Visiting NYC and would love to come meet you.
What is the green stuff on the jumper wires that's being cured with the UV light?
It ain't pretty but I like it. Nice job!
I would normally ask why this had happened but judging from this, it was possibly a botched job, an in competent apple iDiot, or both at the same time.
pretty much a surgery
Shit, that's some neat work
What is the copper color material on the wires? I suppose it does not cary a signal and you need to melt it to silver color to work ? I could you this, what should I type when looking for it?
Monologi o robotach - Enamelled magnet wire.
Thank you :)
Could a donor board be used to replace... the board?
What is green paste and blue light technique ??
Please tell me!
Muhammad Ahsan It's UV curing glue/solder mask.
It's liquid when applied but if you shine the UV light on it, it hardens
Thanks i remember now
:)
this white USB-C adapter what is it? it it possible to use it with power supply and see amperage?
YES!
What's the ultraviolet glue?
Hi! a few quick questions. What is the green thing? What is it for? And what is de UV light for? Thanks in advance!
The green thing is conformal coating: store.rossmanngroup.com/index.php/ab13-uvh900-10ml.html to keep the wires from moving around.
What is the name of the green stuff you cover the contact with and use UV light on?
store.rossmanngroup.com/index.php/ab13-uvh900-10ml.html
Also much cheaper on eBay, no guarantees you'll get the real deal, of course.
Cheers mate, I am not into electronics but I enjoy Louis's videos so just wanted to know what this was. ;)
perfect !
Smd dead bug - nice B-) What is the pin pitch on that thing? 0.4, 0.5 mm / 0.016 - 0.020" ?
Where did you learn to repair?
How are all of those wires not grounding or shorting on each other?
The wire is insulated magnet wire. You can't see it, but the wire has some kind of insulation lacquer which is transparent. The lacquer melts at the solder point.
