I must say, I should have watched this video BEFORE yesterday. But I just ran across it this morning. Yesterday, I went into bestbuy to look at a chromebook for my secretarial position (I use a lot of google programs - docs, sheets, and run in a g suite). I did quite a bit of research on different chromebooks. LOVED the Pixelbook, but thought it was way too pricey. So I went in thinking the Samsung Pro would be just fine. Played with the displays and fell hard for the Pixelbook. After some convincing my husband, I went back that evening and snatched the last Pixelbook they had. I do not regret my decision whatsoever!! Set everything up last night and it works like a DREAM. Mind you, it's only been less than 24 hours, but seeing your review this morning just confirmed a great decision. This was an excellent comparison. Thank you!
As a recent Plus owner and a current Pixelbook owner, I found your review spot on. I have a MacBook Pro that I really like and also use it as a Windows10 machine. It's fine/excellent for the things they do best, but most of my time is on a Chromebook (I'm retired) and I spend so much time on it, the experience matters. It's nice that Chrome OS users finally have the premium hardware available that both Windows and Mac users have long had.
Good information! Please make a video on how to use Chromebook daily... 1.Organising files and folders 2. Editing pictures 3. Using Microsoft office excel, word, PowerPoint, one note 4. Sharing files 5. Editing video on adobe premier
it took me a month to learn that copy and paste doesn't work on chrome os rather than a draggin files and droping them in for example SD card....so yeah we need such vedios for sure and if there is a department need to upgrade in chrome os that is the file manager for sure
@@FeridMuayyad copy and paste works on chrome book. However, if it doesn't have a right click touch pad, it means u will have to hold ALT when you are clicking in order to get the right click menus for copy and pasted etc... U can also do CTRL +C for copy and CTRL +V for paste
I am a former Surface Pro die hard. I have the Pixel and Pixel 2 phones so figured I would try the PixelBook. I got it about 3 weeks ago and love it! The device is definitely premium quality. I spent about $800 on the phone, why would i not expect to pay $1000 for a premium quality laptop. And as you mentioned, I can do 95% of my day to day work on it. For the other 5% I can spin up my VDI on the PixelBook or pull out my old Surface Pro 4. The only thing I am finding difficult to accomplish is MS Project and MS Visio takes - trying to look for Android or Chrome OS alternatives now. When I travel, I only take the PixelBook. I consider myself a Power User, and find I am only getting about 6-7 hours of battery. However, the PixelBook does charge pretty fast. Thank you for the great reviews and comparison! I would rather pay more for premium quality and the extra horse power.
Have you ever used SonicWALL connect or another vpn client to connect to the office (if you have a VPN) with your Chromebook? What about Microsoft RDP Android app? I really want to get a Chromebook but will still have to connect to my windows PC at work.
I have a work VDI now, connect using Citrix Receiver. However, I used to connect to my Windows machine at the office using TeamViewer for Android. Works great! I would suggest you give that a try - I have not tried the other solutions as TV satisfied my needs.
@@ryanpalmer3214 jump desktop is hands down the best solution for rdp. Couple that with a Windows 7 virtual box instance to remote into to do desktop type work on and you are golden.
After four years, how is the pixelbook holding up? The top tier model can be found (refurbished) for the same price as a 2021 midrange chromebook now so I'm strongly tempted.
it's really not "apples to apples". For more than 2x the price the Pixel should be a way, way better device. The cramped keyboard is the only real issue I've had with the Pro.
I'm not sure why he compared these two.. should have similarly priced devices. Ridiculous to wait until the very end to say the Samsung is good for the price after praising the far more expensive Pixelbook. Then he says "if you want the BEST, get Pixelbook. If you don't care a out quality as much, get Samsung."
Super clear. Very complete. Very honest and balanced. Oct 31 2019 comment - I am getting my new Pixelbook Go delivered tomorrow. I truly feel this new product offering will be even better! Look forward to your future reviews. Keep up the great work.
Awesome job. I'm annoyed by how many believe it is overpriced. The hardware is priced well below that of comparable MacBooks and Surface products. For those that rely on Chromebooks for their business, the Pixel is amazing and completely worth it.
Cord Varty In all honesty though, I feel like a £550 iPad Pro (£640 normally) is a better deal than the Pixelbook. It just depends on what work you do but as a designer and writer the iPad is better value for me. Also, I slightly prefer the design on the iPad - call me petty but - the bezels on the Pixelbook don’t sit well with me. I can definitely see why some would prefer the Pixelbook, however.
Cord Varty The i5 is really an m5. The SSD is eMMC and slow. The screen has ghosting, the bezels are fat. Google cut corners and is slugging premium price. Seems to be a pattern this year with the pixel 2 problems as well. Tbh I am looking more favourably towards apple products because Google and MS attempts to go high end are so underwhelming.
I'm most excited about the Y series i5. It's runs cool, is fanless, and uses less power. It's all a Chromebook needs. That's what the 12" MacBook uses too. The eMMC should be fine in a Chromebook. I imagine it uses less power and runs cooler than a standard SSD. I'm a WordPress developer and don't move around large files. I used the 2015 Pixel before this and feel this is a big improvement.
Bundy Hanson, I've considered using an iPad. I'm an Android user though and while using a laptop, I work exclusively in the web. I even edit videos online with WeVideo. My favorite feature is that I can sign in on any Chromebook and start where I left off. I travel to the Philippines often and at times leave my laptop home. I just borrow my partner's Chromebook if needed. If you can get by with an iPad, that's great. Save the money and get that awesome build quality and much better speakers and camera too 😁
Cord Varty I honestly feel like this is a step backwards. I don't see how anyone can be excited about a y series chip and eMMC in a laptop or the dodgy state of Android apps. I'm not trying to knock anyone's purchase but Google just aren't delivering premium levels of build quality and hardware for a premium price. The iPad Pro is miles ahead in almost every respect with it's only fault being that it's not android haha.
Great review... thanks. I ventured into the Chrome OS environment a few years ago and as time has gone, I've been able to move most of my tasks from my mac and windows to Chrome. I opted for the Samsung plus model about a month ago to take my experience to the next level and enjoying every minute with the android app integration. Performance of the plus meets my needs but I can feel the urge to go all in for the pixel model. Keep those great reviews coming!
In my previous comment, I forgot to mention one thing that I've "discovered" with my Pixelbook. I'm an Office 365 subscriber and was frustrated that Microsoft didn't seem to allow the tablet version of Office to be installed on the larger android-capable Chromebooks, like the Plus. I had read there was a screen size cutoff which doesn't make sense, but is what it is. After I got my Pixelbook I was pleasantly surprised to see that for whatever reason, I could install my paid version of the tablet MS Office and it works just fine.
As great as the Pixelbook is, saving $500-550 and then getting a premium device means a lot. It really is comparing great to good, but there are $500 in between.
Jesse Stevenson Why should I pick one? I'm just saying that you can save $500 depending on your choice and that both are good pieces of technology, so it depends on the budget and use you are going to give to the device. I grabbed a CB Pro because it'll be my secondary machine, but I can see how other people would grab a Pixelbook.
Got it. Sorry, I just wasn't clear what you were getting at in your original post. Now that you've explained further, I understand. Personally, in this case I think you need to choose one or the other because owning both would cost nearly $2,000 and would be a waste of money since they both do the same thing. But, it's your wallet and your life and I would never presume to tell you what to do, so if you want to own both then go for it :) Personally, having owned both of them, I think the Chromebook Pro is the better value. The CB Pro is my main, go to, everyday computer and has been awesome. While I love the Pixelbook and think it is an absolutely brilliant laptop, I am glad that I saved $640 and chose to return the Pixelbook and keep the CB Pro. Just curious, what is your primary machine?
Jesse Stevenson I have a windows machine (dualboot with Linux) as a primary machine. I'm a student and I do some graphic design work, programming and Android development so I can't move to a Chromebook to 100%, but the CB Pro serves to do some admin work (emails, task management, project management), graphic design work (on Figma which is web based) and also to take notes in class and carry around in University, which is one of my main usecases. Also, I agree that the CB Pro seems like a better value (it's less than half the price of the PB) however, given the specs of the Pixelbook I can see how people that use a Chromebook as primary computer would want to get the top Chromebook in the market.
I have a surface pro 3 and I love it. I was sick of windows and the surface with windows 10 made me like it again. but when it came time to replace it I went for the samsung pro. and I was mostly happy. certainly happier than with windows. then I saw the pixwlbook. and I fell in love. I came into a little money and decided to go for it. and I am not looking back. I am really happy. I am selling my samsung pro and keeping the pixelbook. For me Windows is more computer than I need. and there are plenty of times where being a full OS gets in the way. Since I have Windows Word on a chromebook (both the pixelbook and the pro) the chromebook does everything I need. But the Pixelbook has a much better typing experience and I really need that because I type a lot. now if I couldn't afford the pixelbook and would be happy with the samsung over the surface and never look back but now that I have exoerienced the pixelbook it is like having the best of both worlds. I have the impeccable hardware experience similar to the surface but I have the superior software experience of the Chrome OS. I am one happy camper.
Great video. You did a really good job. I bought the Samsung because of the price point and I love it. My Mom lost her computer in a fire and I bought her the Pixelbook. It is a great machine as mentioned. The reality is, for me, I can't see the difference in performance, the sharp edges on the Pixelbook make it uncomfortable and it actually catches on my bag. The Samsung is much nicer to hold and to use in tablet mode (I spend a lot of time on planes). Having used both, I would buy the Samsung again. I have 32G of RAM and have never had less that 10G free even when I load up movies on Prime Video and Netflix for travel. You can't go wrong with either device.
Great review! I had a surface pro and went to see this in person on launch day for the pixelbook. I then purchased one and have used it as my daily driver and have never been happier using it. The biggest challenge is thinking outside of the norm and learning what other software is available to do Windows and Mac OS things. Once you get there though you can't beat it. Speed, performance, and looks it's simply the best day to day laptop I've ever owned.
Robbie.. as always great video. I'm waiting on the i7 Pixelbook.. but my Dad (84 yo) just replaced his windows laptop with the Samsung Pro. He loves it. I have heard a few reviews knock the THICK bezels on the Pixelbook.. but that is actually a major problem for my Dad. The Pro's thin Bezels leaves him no place to leave his thumbs when in tablet mode. He is learning but he is always tapping stuff he didn't intend to.
I am just looking for a chromebook that is decently priced, somewhat durable, fast loading, and 3 type usage options. I am mainly going to want to use it for social media, web browsing, Microsoft word or something equivalent for resumes and other usages. So would the pro be the better choice for me?
Would love to see a Pixelbook Vs C302 video as well as it would.allow me to really compare the two devices. I have an Asus C302 and really want to upgrade to the Pixelbook but cannot seem to justify it.
Thank you for this. I am a bit concerned because I have a MacBook pro and I love it. However was thinking about switching to Pixelbook. Do you think it is a safe move? I mostly use my McBook to work on word, PDFs and also Excel pages. What do you think? Can I use word on Pixelbook? Sorry if the question is stupid but I have been a Mac user for years
Thanks Robby. I really appreciate the time you took, to show the differences in these two. Side-by-side. For myself. I picked the Acer Chromebook 15. With it's back-lit keys, bigger screen, and those fantastic up-firing speakers. That is the best choice for me.
Thanks for your input Arihiroki. I have been buying them for our Company, for the last three generations. 72 units in total. We have had zero issues so far.
Why didn't he mention that the sound is total crap on both? Speakers sound like a tiny guy from China is sounding out from a hidden tuna can....Bluetooth speakers are almost mandatory on both...
Bezels are 2017's weird complaint by everyone. They don't bother me. I like the bigger keyboard and I like having something to hold in tablet mode. I mostly use the device in the dark...so they are invisible.
I haven't bought one yet, but I would lean towards the Pro. I have used Chrome OS exclusively for almost 4 years now and don't have a reason to go back to windows. With that said I can't justify $1100+ price for a Chromebook. I will say I was playing with the PB at Best Buy and I got that thing to freeze for a good 10-15 seconds. I actually thought I broke it. I had like two tabs open, but was flipping it to tablet mode and the safety cord was in the way so I flipped it around a few times and when I got it back to laptop mode, the screen was oriented properly and it was frozen. Do I think all PB are like that? No of course not, it probably has never been rebooted. But I do think you can freeze a PB.
I agree...I use Windows at work, and have a Windows desktop at home, but my go-to, favorite device is my Chromebook. I also tried the PB at Best Buy, and experienced the same. I personally think it was a combination of the demo mode that was running on the PB...as well as Best Buy's slow wifi (due to so many devices being connected to it). I have a 2015 Chromebook Pixel LS (i.e. the 16gb ram version...the "Ludicrous Speed" one) and love it. It is awesome. I've never owned a better device. With similar specs, I would imagine that the PB would run very well, absent of some demo program that slows it down etc. If my Chromebook Pixel LS were to die...I'd buy the PB...and probably the insanely expensive one...because it truly is "ludicrously fast"...the best, the fastest and smoothest device I've seen.
levi Dauerheim has not slowed down at all. Same Asus chromebox. I did upgrade ram to 16gb, but my coworker who has same Chromebox never upgraded his RAM and his is still same as day one. If it ever got slow I would powerwash it. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.
Hello. I just picked up a Pixelbook right before Christmas but also just picked up the 2015 Chromebook Pixel 2 LS for half the price. Which machine do you think I should hold on to? I like them both and I hear windows 10 dual boot will soon be available. What are your thoughts?
@@MLyricEntertainment Fact re means the pixel is designed for heavy professional daily usage. How many "john does" that use Chromebook will ever do the things that he mention he does one a daily bases? I just received a spam ad for the Samsung Chromebook pro and it,, got my interest, Intel m3 processor and all. I thought that Bobby said that the processor in the Pixtal and the pro were equal.
Similar to the iPhone SE case style, the Pixelbook is a beautiful piece of industrial design. If they produce Pixelbook 2 I'm hoping they maintain this design asthetic.
The problem with Chromebooks is the lack of updates from Google after 4 years! They stop updates after about 4 years! So after that, if you buy the pixel you're stuck with an expensive Chromebook that stops getting updates. And that can cause some websites to stop working. For example, Netflix became inaccessible because the browser didn't have the latest DRM update. My friend's inexpensive Chromebook was able to access Netflix because it was still receiving updates. Google really should be providing indefinite support for all Chromebooks, instead of introducing artificial time limits. That's why I would never buy an overpriced Pixelbook.
I'm sure there is but how much is it though? I heard certain chromebooks can't have google play. Mine does and i'm so happy. i use mine for gaming, this (TH-cam),facebook and browsing. i am in love with it. i got mine from Amazon
Or 256to4 1 second ago Yup, and I bought one around Thanksgiving for $499 with 64 gigs and don't see how the Pixel could be worth over twice as much. I don't look at the keys while typing and have no issue with the keyboard. The pro is fast, so what if the other is a little faster, he never says how hot the Pixel gets, I smell a sales job here.
Pixel book works like a charm and for some of us a lit keyboard is a must along with easy syncing with comparable phone (Pixel phone). Gets me 10 hours easily for reading, typing documents, listening to music while messaging simultaneously from my Pixelbook.
As someone who owns both of these devices I fully agree with this review. So fair and balanced with flat facts. Thanks for your videos, keep up the great work!
Jesse Stevenson I bought the Chromebook Pro. Before the Pixel book. Like he said in the video I was not happy with the keyboard, trackpad, or overall performance. So I gave it to my daughter when I picked up my Pixelbook.
Oh got it! I thought that you owned both and used both, which would be weird. I own the Chromebook Pro and am pretty happy with it. I tested out the Pixelbook for a while, and the keyboard and build are definitely FAR superior to the CB Pro. But in all other areas, the CB Pro is equal or better in my opinion. I'm willing to accept a less than optimal keyboard to save the $600 I saved by choosing the Pro over the Pixelbook.
@@jtstevenson81 Plenty of people have multiple devices. 🙂 They could use the Pro as a beater and keep the Pixelbook as a desktop alternative. There are a million different reasons. Most computer people have multiple devices, and they're often similar since people tend to have personal references.
@@KairosTemporalis it's been four years. Is the pixelbook holding up? I'm strongly tempted to pick up a 2018-2019 model now that the price is so much lower, but if it's outdated or things like Bluetooth aren't holding up, I may reconsider. Getting a premium chromebook with an i7 and 512gb/16gb sounds like it could be smarter than a mid range 2021 model.
Like someone else mentioned, Robby you are the King of Chromebook reviews , the next one that comes close in my opinion is SypnoTech. I loved this review , you nailed it.
I had the same dilemma. I think trying to compare a $449 chromebook to another at $1100 ( if you want to the stylus like Samsung you need to pay $99 extra) already tells you Samsung chromebook pro has the best value proposition. I have a triple monitor workstation at home using a mbp +egpu and I wanted something for when I am not at my home office. The chromebook pro gets you 95% to your productivity goals for less than than $500, the pixel gets you 98% there for more than $1k. I tried both I kept the chromebook pro. I love how chromebook in general really are getting to such high level now.I cannot wait to see if google will have a better product cycle for this machine. I think the only way the value for the chromebook pixel would have been worth $1k would be if had wireless charge , the wireless buds included or maybe get a 50% discount if you get a bundle like the pixel 2 phone and the chromebook idk. $1k even for a good chromebook just feels wrong.
Wesley Kunze The internals of the Pixelbook are quite middling. I'm disappointed with the direction Google has taken over the last couple of years. Circa 2015 outstanding laptop and phone, now corner cutting and price gouging. Pretty sad.
Wesley Kunze I have only 2 things to contribute to this post: 1.I agree. I also kept the Chromebook Pro over the Pixelbook. 2. You look like Tom Cruise.
Hi, great video as always!! I've got a 2017 MacBook Pro 15" and an Asus Chromebook C302 with 8gb RAM (which I personally consider is better than the Samsung Pro). For 95% of what I need to do the chromebook is just as good, to the point where I'm seriously considering selling the MacBook as it just seems overkill. I got suckered in by the new shiny thing and I've always used MacOS as I struggle to get on with Windows. The implementation of android apps has been a game changer for me, and I've had none of the "beta" type issues many people reported. Today I saw a PixelBook for the first time and I have to admit it looks awesome. I'm seriously tempted! How are the wrist pads wearing for you? They looked seriously discoloured on the one I saw in store....
Thank you for this very thoughtful review. I was considering a Pixel Slate but the prices every year just go up. I seem to remember it used to be the other way around. Looking for quality in the last gen models.
I had the Plus for a while, liked the form, but it would bog down when running too many apps (especially when using a second monitor). I purchased the Pixelbook on release day (256 version), with the pen you're at over $1300. I really enjoyed the hardware, except the pen. I had a bit of buyers remorse and returned it for the Pro (64 version for $499). I love it. I prefer the black, the all aluminum build, and the pen (I have a Note 8 and Tab S3, to seamlessly go from one device to the other is great), The keyboard and the speakers are probably my only issue with the Pro. There is also something about carrying around a $500 device instead of a $1200 glass device that makes you a lot more relaxed, though built really well, I always felt like I was going to break the Pixelbook. Just an FYI... I purchased the LG 29" wide screen monitor with the saved money, unfortunately the Pro does not handle it very well, I don't if it's device specific or a Chrome issue?
Steven Colvin Great decision Steven, I think that its very important from a usability point of view, that you are confortable using the device in any form it was design to. And for that alone the Pro Wins!
That's what I was wondering... the proper ratio was in the settings. It didn't seam to have enough juice to run it. It shows the picture beautifully, just flickers when I do anything. One thing I did notice was it flickers less with one of my USB-C to Hdmi adapters over the other, also the Hdmi cable seamed to make a difference. I have not been able to make it flicker free yet though? (maybe a direct conection will work- haven't tried it yet) It works great for my windows desktop, I really like the wide format.
..... I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab E a few weeks ago because my Google Nexus 7 (2013) died. I love the almost 10 inch screen and the SDcard capability. My next purchase will be a tablet with a 4K AMOLED screen, I really don't need a physical keyboard, haven't used one in over 5 years! Your reviews at Chrome Unboxed are great and very informative!
Another top quality comparison. The one thing that frustrates me about Chrome OS at the moment and the thing that makes me hesitant is that one killer app for managing all my email accounts (iCloud, Gmail, multiple O365 accounts). It’s one thing that is important to me. Do you have a recommendation of what I could use on the PixelBook for managing email?
When it came out I didn't want it thinking it was overpriced for just a Chromebook. Plus I already had a well working laptop. A few months later I see that the pixelbook is drawing me closer to it everyday, with me wanting it even though I don't need it. I have lost myself in the Google abyss.
Congratulations for your videos and for the passion for this operating system that I learned to love thanks to your videos, you have all my esteem. Having said that let me ask you a question, in your authoritative opinion, is the Pixelbook the best chromebook on the market? In Italy the cost for this laptop is about 1380 euros, do you think it is such a high price? Thank you, a greeting in nice Mauro from the laughing Ardea country citizens
There is zero reason to ever spend more than 500 dollars on a chromebook. If you go above 500 dollars you might as well get a Widows PC or Mac. 500 dollars is kind of a lot for a chromebook as it is. I went with the Chromebook plus for 349 dollars (Best Buy sale), build is great and runs great.
Someone should make a thicker, more comfortable "pen body" to slide the samsing one into, if the tooth pick like feel is just not cutting it for most folks.
Fantastic comparison review! I went with the Pixelbook as your comparison pushed me over the hump as I had been indecisive for about a week between the two. I want to compliment you on your presentation. You just have a natural persona and voice for reviewing. I just subscribed. Thanks!
First review I've seen that focuses on the pleasure of actual daily use of the Pixelbook that arises largely from the fantastic keyboard, trackpad, palmrest etc... sure the screen has big bezels etc etc... but you can pick this up and just WORK on it for hours as long as you don't need WIndows or Mac specific software... and most people, even those who have to use software that runs on those platforms, have several hours in their day where they DON'T need them, and that space is where this device excels... its just a pleasurable piece of hardware that does simple things well, which is not all that simple...
Currently watching this on my MacBook but I'm ready to make the switch. Thanks for the video. I wasn't sure which to get and this video has made that a bit easier.
Great video. I see Verizon is offering a pixelbook with LTE but is 999 rather than 749 that everyone else dropped to. Does that mean Verizons unit has LTE built in or is there a way to add a card to the standard pixelbook?
It's on sale on Google store, Amazon and others. Just $749. Last night I bought 2. "Save $250 on Google Pixelbook with Intel® Core™ i5, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, originally $999, now $749. Offer valid till September 3, 2018" At our company we only work with chrome devices (Chromebooks, Chromeboxes, Chromebits and Chromecasts). We also use "Google Chrome Management Console", to define the usage policy at the company. I have a Chromebook Pixel 2 i7 (I paid 1600), and next year I'm replacing mine with a new Pixelbook core i7. So it's as you said, it depends on what you use Chrome OS for. 4 years ago we switched from windows to Chrome OS and Google Apps and we cannot be happier, specially me since I'm in charged of IT.
Do you every use 2 personas (user accounts) on your Pixelbook? Because it really slows down for me when I do. Even with just 5 tabs open in one and 10-15 tabs open in the other. Every just having Google Play Music running in one account (personal) and using the other to work. Every reviewer is just saying that no matter what they do, they can't lag the Pixelbook but I'm over here getting significant stutter and lag when using 2 personas (a base feature of Chrome OS). I feel like I'm going nuts. I've tried power washing over and over and that doesn't fix it. 1 account logged in, it's pretty good, 2 accounts with minimal open, it starts running pretty poorly. Thanks for the comparison!
I have an Acer Chromebook 14, a pretty entry level Chromebook, I've used 2 accounts at the same time occasionally, and I haven't noticed the problem you described. Switching back and forth between users is smooth and working in either one of them is also just like normal, as in I don't feel any different when there is another account logged in and has web pages open.
Vanisshen interesting, thanks. I wonder if it's having too many chrome extensions or something then because mine is definitely rough on the Pixelbook. Thanks!
Just so you know, there is a variant of the Samsung Chromebook Pro that has 64GB storage. I purchased one off best buy! Got mines on black friday for 499$. ✊🏿
Super late comment, but I just bought a Pixelbook today after the price dropped to $750. I am coming from a Chromebook Plus and this is a heck of a jump in every way. Great review.
I have a 2016 MacBook pro and before purchasing this one, I was thinking about Samsung pro. But back then there wasn't a releasing date and I needed a laptop and I didn't want a Windows. But if I had the choice between Pixel book and MacBook, probably I was going for Pixel book.
Hi, Thanks for sharing. I have a question; I need to make and edit videos but not daily, just occasionally, it is going to be my day-to-day work device. Does the Samsung pro works well for me?
I wanted to thank you for the comparison video I was on the fence trying to decide which chromebook I should purchase but thanks to you I have decided to purchase the Google Pixelbook. I just have one question can I install virtualbox vm with Ubuntu Linux on the Google Pixelbook ?
I didn't say otherwise. Every windows application probably has a native linux alternative, or else can be run non-natively through Wine, or else can be run in a virtual machine. So everything you can do in Windows, you can do in linux.
I have a Pixel2 -2015. i5-8GB Ram. Absolutely loving it for the last 3 years. Worth the 1,000.00 price tag ? YES. It is a high build quality machine and it doesn't disappoint the avid Chrome OS user. I have no regrets buying it. I have had two Acer Chromebooks prior to the Pixel2, so I can make the comparison.
Great video. I had no idea about the Pro's fingerprint issue. Samsung should have just used the Plus's finish. Combined with the keyboard issues, it's hard to justify spending on the Pro. Your video also clearly demonstrated that Chromebook designers haven't figured out the stylus - Pro has a place to hold it but it's a toothpick, Pixelbook has no place for it, and the pen uses AAAA (????) batteries. I think you should do a Pixelbook/Asus C302 comparison video. One negative thing they have in common - large bezels.
Thank you for the extended review - by someone who actually used a Chromebook for a living. I don't think the "it's not a Windows laptop / Macbook" reviews are particularly useful 😀. Any chance of doing an extended review on how the Android apps really work on Chrome O/S ?
I really dig your videos. Another great review. I am so considering the Pixelbook. I use an old MacBook Pro but, I do just about everything in the Chrome Browser. So to me a Chromebook makes perfect sense...
Superb review that focusses on practicality. I am a teacher and i dont get chromebooks here in India. Sad... I have been doing most of my work in Chrome Browser on a Macbook Air and the iPad Pro (for the Pencil). I realize that for most of my typing & daily work, a lean OS like Chrome OS would be the perfect choice.
I got the pixel 4 XL, love Google products but I'm confused about which Chromebook Go I can take. I don't know. Can you help ? I get super excited and I saw the Google Chromebook got update until 2026. This is perfect. Thanks for your videos.
Did you get the Pixelbook? I have the same dilemma at the moment . I also have a 4 xl and i have been using the Samsung Chromebook for a year now. it is great but linux apps do run a bit slow. I was just wondering if it will work better with the rest of my google native devices. Thanks ahead of time.
What it seems to come down, you're getting what you pay for. In saying that I do have a Samsung Plus, bought it well over a year ago when it first came out. I had no intention on using a chromebook for a laptop replacement, I have a Macbook Pro for that. For my use it does what I need, came to about $385 with sales tax and i worked with the app store form the day I got it. There where some issue which where chromeOS issues, not so much from the CB Plus, and since the past fall it seemed to improved significantly. My use is basically email, web surfing and chatting on the irc. I never expected it to be a road warrior so wasn't disappointed. My biggest complaint was the lack of the backlit keyboard. And on the positive side love the pen. If my sole use was for a chromebook, and had no intention on getting a windows or mac based laptop, in a heart beat I'd go for the Pixelbook. Also take into consideration I have the plus not the pro version which is even slower. I loved your review, and in agreement. Comes down to use .
Great review. The Pixel book is the clear winner for double the price. Now let's compare the Pixel to a 2k dollar MacBook Pro and let's see how it stacks up against a top of the line device.
Vince Friel theirs a reason they added those specs to the PB. There working on Linux support right now. You can actually run Linux apps in the dev channel right now.
Robby, what Linux desktop did you typically install and work with on the Samsung Pro? Regardless, if you haven't already, try installing a desktop while using the low-latency kernel command. That may solve the ram issues because 4gb of ram on my Hp G1 uses 4gb of ram much more efficiently out of the box, so some tweaking to the Samsung Pro may be possible to bring it, "up to snuff."
I still use may Pixelbook 2013 and I'm still running strong. The only frustration I have with ChromeOS is printing. If you do not have a Google ready printer printing is a nightmare.
I really enjoy your videos! This was exactly the comparison I was waiting for. I purchased the Acer 14 a few months back as a back up and now I almost never use my windows laptop. I want a smaller one to travel and as much as I love the Pixelbook, I think I'll go with the Samsung and a vacation 🙂
Just got an open box (used) Samsung Pro w/64gig storage at Best Buy. It was $251.99 before taxes. All I saw was a mark along the lid (almost like a crayon mark), screen was perfect and undamaged. Did I get a good deal?
i enjoy my pixel 2 phone a great deal, as a future author, expecting to get a Pixelbook on my next trip Stateside. Thanks for the objective comparison! I do enjoy Chrome so much more than windows and never took to Apple products ..
Hello, started watching this video because i just recently purchase the samsung chromebook 3 from black friday deal. Been having issues that I am currently not sure i may not like to deal with and was consider to pick up the samsung chromebook pro. Some of the big issues i am having is typing i am constantly miss typing like crazy, the screen color and quailty seems really off, screen size is a bit too small, and when running multiple tabs (3-5) i am experiencing lags. Coming from a macbook air 13 inch i am looking for something with a similar build and speed when browsing. Would you reccomend the SAmsung chromebook pro or something else cause im at the point of returning it and willing to spend another $400 plus it 100 price tag?
Would definitely go for the Asus C302 over the Samsung for a better full sized keyboard, more internal storage, cheaper, better battery, backlit keyboard, better company, better design,...
While I agree with most of this statement, I'm not to sure about the better battery. With screen brightness at 50% I'm getting about 6 hours screen on time as of lately.
That doesn't sound good. Jump into a shell (ctrl + alt + t) and check battery health by running "battery_test". It should show current percentage of design capacity. For whatever reason, your battery might need replacement soon.
Dennis Ho It's a bit low but nothing terrible (and prone to error depending on whether the battery is properly calibrated). Eg., my 1.5 year old Acer Chromebook 15 that I use almost daily is at 93%.
Have the Pixelbook and I love it. But what I'd really like to see is a review of the damn Tomtoc cover I've been eyeing that you have sitting right next to you!
Brother, I couldn't agree with you more about Chrome OS. I have the Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015) and an hp omen windows 10 pc... I can't stand working on it. I instantly want to work on my chromebook over any widows machine. The next option is a touchscreen chromebook. Looking at the Asus C302
The Samsung Pro 64 GB is on sale at Best Buy for $499. Same price as the 32 GB at Best Buy. Odd. And it comes with a free Google home. I picked one up and I love it.
I was told by someone at best buy that the Chromebook Plus V2 and the Chromebook Pro were almost the same thing. Don't listen to that. My Chromebook Plus V2 is falling apart. One of the rubber things on the inside fell off, and the paint has been scratching off just from putting it in and out of my backpack. I usually can't connect to my house's or school's WiFi, so I have to constantly put on my phone's hotspot. Also it's worth noting that the Plus V2 does have 2 USB-C ports, but for some reason they're both on the left. Also there's only one USB port on the right, and no HDMI port. The Pro is only $100 more, so if you have the extra money, or if you have the extra time to earn the extra money, then *FOR THE SAKE OF GOLLY* BUY THE PRO
I bought a brand new Pixelbook for $400 from someone online. I'm glad I did because this keyboard is absolutely amazing to type on. This is how Apple should have designed the keyboards on their new Macbooks. The performance is good and the screen quality is great. I don't mind the bezels. After a while you kind of forget that they're there plus I own a 2015 MBP and the bezels are about the same so it does not bother me at all. Id say if you can find a pixelbook used or new for $500 or less then go for it. I wouldn't pay $1000 for a fancy chrome browser because I literally only use it as a tablet now for TH-cam.
Got the Samsung pro 64gb model on sale for $420 so I think I made the right decision 😁👍 btw i have a really good desktop pc that runs windows but i needed a new laptop to take notes and surf the web for college so I think the Pro is all i need

1.Organising files and folders
2. Editing pictures
3. Using Microsoft office excel, word, PowerPoint, one note
4. Sharing files
5. Editing video on adobe premier
Agree with this
This is really a great idea. I'd love to watch a series of "Everyday Work on a Chromebook"
it took me a month to learn that copy and paste doesn't work on chrome os rather than a draggin files and droping them in for example SD card....so yeah we need such vedios for sure
and if there is a department need to upgrade in chrome os that is the file manager for sure
u don't need to use Microsoft Office. Google Apps are actually better in many ways
Pixel is not 2X better, for sure. My problem is I bought Nexus/Pixel phones and they all failed on me.
Get a Pixelbook or an iPhone X
OR
Get a Chromebook Pro AND a OnePlus 5T
Andre Boccaccio I did exactly this! Second choice because I'm not rich xD.
Rafael Aderaldo Monticelli great for you
Not really, my chromebook pro came with a blank screen, I`m going to return it and get an asus c302.
saw many people on amazon saying that they have problems with the pro, some of them having problems with the 2nd unit that they received.
Id do pixelbook and oneplus 5t
Save the money and get
that awesome build quality and much better speakers and camera too 😁
Cord Varty I honestly feel like this is a step backwards.
It is not only for Pixelbook. Google just added support for Microsoft Office in Play Store.
As great as the Pixelbook is, saving $500-550 and then getting a premium device means a lot. It really is comparing great to good, but there are $500 in between.
Your post is unclear if you are advocating for the CB Pro or the Pixelbook.
But, it's your wallet and your life and I would never presume to tell you what to do, so if you want to own both then go for it :)
Personally, having owned both of them, I think the Chromebook Pro is the better value.
Well is the pixel book worth it at 600?
Wendi martin is it weird watching a video on the samsung pro becayse i heard pepole saying watching videos was weird on it
levi Dauerheim it always worked fine for me. There's letterboxing so I guess it's whether that bothers you or not
Great video.
Robby, there have been some up's, and there have been some down's, but I do believe you are the king of chromebook reviews.
Robbie.. as always great video.
Sorry if the question is stupid but I have been a Mac user for years
No question is stupid
There is a 64 gig storage version of the pro bought one 6 days ago at best buy for $499,00 worth every penny.
I have to say... your TH-cam channel has evolved into something great. Thank you for the excellent Chrome content.
Thanks Robby.
I really appreciate the time you took, to show the differences in these two. Side-by-side.
For myself. I picked the Acer Chromebook 15. With it's back-lit keys, bigger screen, and those fantastic up-firing speakers. That is the best choice for me.
Acer quality control is crap & warranty is crap... had 3 acer CB & all 3 had motherboard problems acer didnt want to fix
Thanks for your input Arihiroki. I have been buying them for our Company, for the last three generations. 72 units in total. We have had zero issues so far.
I still use an old Acer C710, by no means a "sexy" CB, it still just works.
What's fantastic about the up-firing speakers? I'd like to know because I work and play as a musician and a fan of music. Thanks for your comment.
I have an Acer spin 11 that I really liked and I only paid $329 for it at Best Buy.
I have the revised version of the Samsung Pro. They did give it a back-lit keyboard but didn't fix how mushy the keyboard feels.
My Acer Chromebook has a good keyboard. The keys are large enough and well space so it makes it easier for me to type.
Chromebook Pro is half the price and has a better stylus that is actually included
Why didn't he mention that the sound is total crap on both? Speakers sound like a tiny guy from China is sounding out from a hidden tuna can....Bluetooth speakers are almost mandatory on both...
Unrelated to the Pixelbook, where can I buy one of those Red TH-cam notebooks?
Also another great video guys. Amazing to see how much your site and channel have grown. Keep up the great work.
If my Chromebook Pixel LS were to die...I'd buy the PB...and probably the insanely expensive one...because it truly is "ludicrously fast"...the best, the fastest and smoothest device I've seen.
hey you said you have had chrome os for 4 years and a question I have is do they slow down a lot overtime or are they all ways pretty quick?
levi Dauerheim has not slowed down at all.
What are your thoughts?
when you watch the video solely to feel good about your Pixelbook purchase 😂😂... great comparison, Robby
@@riley1636 And that pretty much it costs double price. Not worth it. Unless you've got thousands to spend.
@Vince Friel lol right!?
I would love to see a workflow video showing how you video edit.
One correction, there is a 64GB version of the Samsung from Best Buy.
I'm sure there is but how much is it though? I heard certain chromebooks can't have google play. Mine does and i'm so happy. i use mine for gaming, this (TH-cam),facebook and browsing. i am in love with it. i got mine from Amazon
Or 256to4

Yup, and I bought one around Thanksgiving for $499 with 64 gigs and don't see how the Pixel could be worth over twice as much.
Why would you own both? I don't see why it would be beneficial to have both of them. You either choose one or the other.
Actually it would be great to see a video on just loading virtual machines on the Google Pixelbook (Linux, WIndows)
Pretty sad.
Wesley Kunze I have only 2 things to contribute to this post:
1.I agree. I also kept the Chromebook Pro over the Pixelbook.
2. You look like Tom Cruise.
Simply love your videos. You cover aspect which the consumer might think of.
Hi,
great video as always!!
Agreed connecting external monitors to SCBP is elusive. I wonder has Robbie had any success?
It works fine on my ASUS 27" with a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio, but it doesn't like the wide format (flickers)?
Steven Colvin Chrome OS doesn’t support that aspect ratio yet.
The pixelbook design is so interesting and unique. It's actually the first notebook that, IMHO, genuinely feels like a "notebook"
You are the best reviewer I've seen on TH-cam thus far. Thank you!
I watched this on a Samsung Chromebook Pro. Amazing chromebook. Highly recommend.
This video was super helpful, even looking at this now in 2019. Thanks for reviewing!
Great video. I see Verizon is offering a pixelbook with LTE but is 999 rather than 749 that everyone else dropped to. Does that mean Verizons unit has LTE built in or is there a way to add a card to the standard pixelbook?
Probably a dumb question, but does the pen come with the pixelbook ? Or do you have to buy it separately?
This is the far best laptop review I have ever seen for a while. Great job man !
It's on sale on Google store, Amazon and others. Just $749. Last night I bought 2. "Save $250 on Google Pixelbook with Intel® Core™ i5, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, originally $999, now $749. Offer valid till September 3, 2018"
At our company we only work with chrome devices (Chromebooks, Chromeboxes, Chromebits and Chromecasts).
Thanks!
Analysis Paralysis My pleasure. BTW your video is nice!
Vanisshen awe, hey thank you for the kind words and for checking it out! Really appreciate it (:
Great video. Fantastic information for someone who has just started looking at switching to a Pixelbook, like me. Thanks very much!
Excellent comparison video. Really outlines everything very well. Helped me make my decision.
If you run Linux on your Chromebook then you can do anything windows and mac os can. That's also where it pays to have 8gb ram or more.
nortexoid not every program has a Linux version. The software that holds me to windows does not
I didn't say otherwise. Every windows application probably has a native linux alternative, or else can be run non-natively through Wine, or else can be run in a virtual machine. So everything you can do in Windows, you can do in linux.
so that means EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO IN WINDOWS YOU CAN DO IN THE BIOS
nortexoid Then I might as well buy a windows machine and then run linux along with windows.
Still don’t see the appeal in chrome os.
My Acer spin 11 has a stylus that's not too thin. Have to keep it in the case because it doesn't have any place to insert it in the keyboard
Great video and excellent points made Robby! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you for the extended review - by someone who actually used a Chromebook for a living. I don't think the "it's not a Windows laptop / Macbook" reviews are particularly useful 😀.
Any chance of doing an extended review on how the Android apps really work on Chrome O/S ?
Great review, I am trying to decide on which Chromebook to buy. This is really helpful!
I really dig your videos. Another great review. I am so considering the Pixelbook. I use an old MacBook Pro but, I do just about everything in the Chrome Browser. So to me a Chromebook makes perfect sense...
Good job on your video. Great sound and video quality. Fair and in-depth review. I will watch more of your videos sir
Watching this on my asus c302! Not gonna upgrade this year.
Thank you, great reviews. Helped me with my decision making.
Nice job on this vid. Very balanced, factual, and fair. Well done.
I still use may Pixelbook 2013 and I'm still running strong. The only frustration I have with ChromeOS is printing. If you do not have a Google ready printer printing is a nightmare.
I really enjoy your videos! This was exactly the comparison I was waiting for. I
purchased the Acer 14 a few months back as a back up and now I almost never use my windows laptop.
Absolutely yes
i enjoy my pixel 2 phone a great deal, as a future author, expecting to get a Pixelbook on my next trip Stateside. Thanks for the objective comparison! I do enjoy Chrome so much more than windows and never took to Apple products ..
I might of missed the part about battery life, but what’s the battery life on these things?
I just tried the battery test, it showed 93% of battery health, is this normal? I just got C302 for a week.
was it charged to 100%?
Dennis Ho It's a bit low but nothing terrible (and prone to error depending on whether the battery is properly calibrated). Eg., my 1.5 year old Acer Chromebook 15 that I use almost daily is at 93%.
Thank you for the video. I went for the Samsung since I only needed a device for media consumption and online platform use.
Should I go with an iPhone X and a used MacBook... or Samsung Note 8 with the Chromebook Plus?? Which combo would you guys get?
I've had my Pixelbook for two months now. No regrets whatsoever. I actually haven't ran into any major problems with the Google PlayStore, either.
Got the Samsung pro 64gb model on sale for $420 so I think I made the right decision 😁👍 btw i have a really good desktop pc that runs windows but i needed a new laptop to take notes and surf the web for college so I think the Pro is all i need
Brilliant and informative comparison review. Thank you!
I have the Tab S3, but I am looking to switch to a newer rumored Samsung Chromebook to have a detachable keyboard any thoughts?
