I wonder if that makes really that big difference whether you add cream or ice cream when you shake it? Ice cream is basically a cream and when you shake it, you melt part of it. Wouldn't it be better to not shake the ice cream, but put it inside the glass? Of course, ice cream adds the flavor too.
I think it does end up a bit thicker, more like a milkshake - ice cream often contains eggs, and also has sugar and other flavourings so it’s definitely a more intense ingredient than just cream! But, I do use it the other way where I’ll use ice cream if I have some in the freezer but no fresh cream for something like an Alexander.
