Jesse Tyler Ferguson: I Was the Puzzle Piece That Didn’t Fit

  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family, Dinner’s On Me Podcast) discusses why Modern Family was a pop culture touchstone, being bullied as a child and typecast as an adult, and the importance of having well-rounded gay characters. Jesse reveals he used to have a crush on Mayim as a kid, he and Mayim discuss being on competing shows at the same time, and their shared friendship with Jim Parsons. He opens up about why he resonated with Modern Family’s premise and cast, the show’s fears about showing displays of affection between its gay characters, and meeting his husband at the start of the series. He reflects on getting arrested for shoplifting porn as a child, his awareness of his sexuality at a young age, why community theater and debate club were a positive outlet for him, and why winning a Tony award had a deep impact on him.

We have lost 2 great sitcoms. I never looked at Mitch and Cam as a guy couple Just as a couple with a child. I am 71 and loved watching them. Jesse is a wonderful actor. His story was heartbreaking

I love Mayim’s reaction whenever the guest says they were a Blossom fan.
No matter who you’re talking to or what’s being discussed, I seem to find something every episode that reminds me everyone might be different, but everyone is so similar. Today, it was Jesse talking about looking for where he fit & needing to find where he’s supposed to be.

34:16 I LOVE that you said this. Whenever I see a comment on social media somewhere saying being gay or transgender (but moreso transgender now) is "a phase" and "kids don't know what they want" and "I will say I"m a puppy so I"m a puppy".. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask them "Why is it ok for you to know you are straight but it's not ok for someone who's gay/transgender/etc to not know who they are?" I HAVE NEVER ONCE GOTTEN A DIRECT REPLY TO THIS QUESTION FROM THE UNEDUCATED AND ILINFORMED!

Seeing my favorite character being partially and genuinely his character is just really really touching . I am so happy that not everyone is straight and white as I am (not in a naive way) just happy , cause I gain so so much from his personality. It’s so enriching to my life and I feel so fortunate that I live in a time where people like Jesse are “allowed” to inspire me . There is a really cozy, warm place in my heart that is reserved for him and his sensitivity. Thank you . For the interview, for the inside and openness, but really just for being you Jesse ! ❤

Maybe my favorite episode! Thank you for having this fabulous, funny, kind & brilliant man! As you two are here speaking so freely with fabulous Jesse about how things were merely 10-15 years ago regarding gay couples, I’m asking myself if we’re truly aware how all minorities rights won in past & hard struggles are receding now by giant steps worldwide..It’s because that that “Out & Proud” militant people as same Jesse or Jim Parson must be heard loud & clear! Thanks so much for having Jesse here. Eagerly waiting to have Jim here too! Diversity, gender equity & inclussive films & convos are so much needed. For constant pedagogy. Word of this straight HHRR’s defendant woman in her early 60’s who recently watched Jim Parson’s Spoiler Alert film & did what never does: cried. Such stunning love story. Beyond gender & sexuality issues. Oscar-worthy performance by Jim!

Just wanted to add to the end of the conversation, that not only people insist on one specific gender for baby clothes, but also that it's extremely hard to find gender neutral clothes in general. I had a hard time finding specific types of shirts for my child because what my kid wanted was only targeted to the opposite gender in the toddler years. I wish we could have more neutral options for kids of all ages.

I hope Jesse keeps in mind that there are many of us “watchers” who aren’t so dialed-in on the actors sexuality preference because we/I find the actor so enjoyable to watch. I hope Jease gets to read this message. He is such a beautiful delightful person to watch. Looking forward to seeing more of him in anything! Mahalo🙏🏼💐💞🤗!!!

An actor doesn't only have to be able to act well. They also need to be able to "sell tickets" and that is almost more important than how good actors they are. That is way there are only a handful of movie stars left as so few have name recognition enough to draw an audience.

Oh my Godness! Speechless discovering “the man” behind the actor! Jesse Tyler Fergusson “in flesh” here! I feel that now you “owe us” somehow to have your common and dear friend Jim Parsons here too to close the circle! Even if I imagine that Jim as your guest must be difficult (or exactly the contrary) precisely by your close friendship.
So sweet when Tyler speaks about his own crush on Mayim, and so adorable Mayim’s reaction on that! So delightful too when Jonathan asks him if he’s a part of her fan club! Still laughing. Glorious moments when he blushes red as he speaks ab stealing gay porn and his mom’s 100 condoms gift! Even if it seems to me it was a hard way the way he came out (and who isn’t?). Such unique man and such brave militancy! Thank you to the three of you! 💜💛
And a note: now that tv writers are on strike for a fair payment, we must homage the ones that both your fabulous sitcoms, TBBT and MF had. Along with their magnificent ensembles, you gave (and still give me) so much happy moments! Forever grateful!

I would love to see him play a diametric opposite to the Family Guy characters. I could see him as a very serious, straight-laced bad-guy, a serial killer or assassin kind. He has the ability to bring an intensity to such a role that would make it 100% believable. Add some warmth to the reason for the job and we would even root for him to succeed in his assignment (LOL).

I hate how in this day and age where we are encouraged to be more open minded toward people of all walks of life we seem to be more closed minded. This thought comes when Jesse was talking about being turned down for a straight roll. It's like those in charge of casting don't understand what the term "acting" is.

I think we're in a "X can only play X" and "Y can only write Y" (because it happens so much in writing spaces), because we need to be. But this should be treated as a transitional space. People should be upset but then we have to find equilibrium. Once we condition spaces that are not open to diversity to be diverse, we have to default back to X can play anyone; Y can write anything. Because that's true to the human experiences. These variables (X, Y, Z) really don't speak to who we are at the core.

I also loved that kiss scene because it was snot a grandiose moment. It is not a big deal of the straight married couples kiss so, the most equal thing you can do is to be the same for the gay married couple. It bothers me that they now add a gay couple in a show for shock value. It feels 1. Forced. 2. backwards. That's why that couple was so great it was a funny and loving couple navigating adoption, not focusing on their sexuality.

I’m 66 year old gay man who was born and raised in Brooklyn New York and I was coming out just after stone wall and I was an singer and actor and live in a very suburban neighborhood in Brooklyn and catholic and innocent to who I was and how I would fit in. I had a battle being forced out by my very catholic mother who forced me out not because she was helping me but wanted to shame me out of my gayness and she was the one who I needed backbone to say there is no shame in being me. Yet I was the only one who loved Brooklyn and most of my found family my picked family and I was excited in the theater world. I move to Tucson Arizona to help my husbands health and it did yet I understand now that my husband died from cancer not why we moved. He was everything to me and me to him but I understand Mr Ferguson because I’m reddish blonde and a hot place that I am stuck in and my family is in New York. I had a wonderful 38 years with my husband and Tucson gave us a wonderful 18 years together and regret nothing. Yet I would never pick this place and as hard as it is living here for me and how hard it is to find my family. . This feeling of being in the wrong place is not just a thing for 15 year old gay boys but also my.

Why why why do you have annoying background soundtrack over his talking? Just pick one or the other; his talk or the soundtrack. Why do you think it adds to the video? It's an irritating trend that ruins the enjoyment.

Straight characters, gay characters? It's acting! Do you have to be a criminal to play a criminal? Seriously, it's about the actors ability to become someone he/she is not.

The people were blaming the writers more than the actors .

"Type Casting" has been around as long as acting has been around. Why are people surprised by this? It's not right, and the people with power who limit people because of Type Casting are the wrong people to hold the creative reigns.

Clearly there were no gay writers on that show since Cam was written like a character on Three’s Company back in 1982 🙄. Such a tv stereotype of a feminine gay man.

Annoying mealy mouth sounds and gum cracking are the central sounds in my misophonia.

23:47 I honestly think that Eric was the very best person to play Cameron. And honestly don’t give a fu*k if anyone is against it.
